A group of our Bribie Island Gems recently went to the Volunteer Marine Rescue Base (VMR) on the Island for their end of month Sunset Drinks.

It was a big night, according to resident Dave Nicholls, with the place packed to the brim. With $5 meals, music and cheap drinks there was plenty to enjoy and indulge in.

As Dave said: “Of course, we went in the community bus – an exhausting journey of 3km each way. Being a volunteer organisation, VMR runs raffles on the night, and the big winner was Joan – with first prize of the ham. We brought

it back home with us to GemLife and divided it up amongst the travellers, which resulted in plenty of invitations to various villas for – ham and eggs, ham toasties, ham and pineapple pizza – the list goes on!”

Well sometimes retirement isn’t quite retirement...

Prior to moving into GemLife Bribie Island, I worked (if you call it that) for Down Under Tours, Cairns, driving tourist coaches around the tropical far north of Australia, transporting day tourists and tour groups to and from the various wonders of that area. Having settled into GemLife, I thought my coach driving days were over, but no. Down Under Tours contacted me regarding their commitment of four coaches and six drivers to the Commonwealth Games being held on the Gold Coast. This commitment was part of the Australia wide commitment of 800 coaches and 1100 drivers needed for the Games transport being organised by GamesLinq.

So from 4th to 12th April I surrendered my slow paced lifestyle, packed a bag and headed down to the Denning coach factory at Acacia Ridge, Brisbane. Down Under Tours had ordered a new Denning 53 seat coach, value $680,000, and asked me to pick it up in Brisbane

then head down to the Gold Coast for the Games. This made their 13th Denning and driving out of the factory the coach had 120km on the clock and all I was thinking was “don’t ding it” having not driven a coach since July the previous year. The good news: I drove it all the time I was down at the Games, and didn’t “ding it”.

Apart from an initial glitch in our accommodation, things went well. We drivers were accommodated at Biggera Waters with our coaches (and hundreds of others) housed at Upper Coomera. Down Under Tours’ duty was the Beach Volleyball at Coolangatta, transporting spectators to and from the event, linking in with ‘Park n Ride’ facilities and Varsity Lakes train station. So our role was pretty simple and after some ‘dry’ runs over the various routes we had no real problems. Well, I did have a problem one day. Coming from Varsity Lakes with passengers there was a serious accident on the M1 access road and the police were turning vehicles around. That’s fine for cars, but it took an eight-point turn to get the coach around. I told the policeman who was turning us around that I wasn’t from the area and asked how I could get back on the M1. His response: “I’m not from here either mate”. So I figured, head east and finally we would reach the coast. Luckily, there were a couple of local passengers acted as navigators and fortunately, we found the highway at Burleigh Heads.

Taking spectators to the Beach Volleyball was fun. One of our pickup points was a

‘Park n Ride’ area at the northern edge of Coolangatta airport. In daylight and once loaded with passengers I would then announce that we should be around at the airport proper in about ten minutes for them to be measured for their parachutes prior to their skydiving adventure. Quite a few puzzled faces, but it got their attention and assured they listened to the information provided as we pulled into Coolangatta.

Coolangatta was buzzing for the whole week. The volleyball venue was right on the beach, so there was a constant crowd both at the venue and also the cafes and restaurants along the beachfront. Police and security everywhere, but it was all good humour and behaviour from everyone. Having some roads blocked off to allow exclusive use by Games vehicles helped greatly and we could get in and out of Coolangatta with ease.

Arriving home I felt “jet lagged” and the first night back in my own bed was bliss. Some of my shifts finished late so by the time you parked the coach at the depot, caught the shuttle bus back to the accommodation, it was gone 1am more often than not and my room mate was mainly on day shift and getting up at 5am. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I can now wind back to retirement at GemLife, Bribie Island – until the next phone call!

Keeping up to date with our residents is very important here at GemLife Bribie Island. As a pet friendly resort, we see our animals as part of the family – so in this section of our newsletter, we catch up with our hairier residents.

Kobie is a strong, independent dog – who don’t need no owner! He decided to write in himself for this bio:

Hi there, great to have the opportunity to introduce myself to you all. My name is Kobie, and I have just turned 11 years old. I live at GemLife Bribie Island and I would like to tell you about my life here

with my folks, Sally and Bevan – which is really great! All the dogs I have met are friendly, fun and the people are pretty nice too and welcome me into their social circles.

I may only have one eye, but the nickname “Houdini: my dear pinned on me is, I have to say, somewhat accurate. I have powers which allow me to disappear from view in the wink of a human eye, so I can investigate the many comings and goings around here. So much to sniff, trees to water and places to explore!

Red Beach, Bribie Island is my favourite place. I can explore in amongst the sand dunes, race into the water for a

Wool Cardigan Dog Coat

GEMLIFE’S ‘HOW TO’ GUIDES

With the winter months moving in thick and fast, don’t forget about your hairier friends who might need a little extra TLC. Transform an old wool cardigan into a charming dog coat – your best friend will enjoy the extra warmth and the fabulous fashion statement.

MATERIALS: · Felted cardigan · Scissors · Tailor’s chalk · Sewing pins · Sewing machine · Thread · Blunt-ended tapestry needle · Black wool yarn · Pearl or crystal beads (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Before making the coat, measure

your dog to make sure the felted cardigan is big enough to be cut down to fit. Turn cardigan inside out.

2. Mark sweater with tailor’s chalk in two places: 1) In a straight line from the underarm, and perpendicular to the sleeve seam, so that the sleeve forms a cap. 2) Right above the ribs of the cuff (save cuffs). Cut where marked.

3. Put cardigan on dog, inside out.

4. Pin a dart from the neck down the shoulder and onto the cap sleeve. (This reduces the width of the armhole.) You may need to remove 1.5 to 3.5 inches of knitted fabric. Pin along dog’s chest and stomach, taking up most of the excess knitted fabric.

5. Carefully remove cardigan from the dog. On a sewing machine, stitch

down where pinned (along shoulder and back of cardigan), and then trim the excess.

6. Slip the cuff inside the end of the sleeve and sew the cuff on, using a tapestry needle with a blunt end, black wool yarn, and decorative running stitches.

7. For added decorative detail, sew pearls or crystals to the neck along the base of the neck ribbing, starting at the button band. For decorative effect, make one running stitch in between each pearl.

swim and meet and greet other dogs. So much fun! I love swimming in the GemLife Lake too. For some reason, I don’t seem to be very popular when I arrive home wet and sandy…

If you see me around, please say “gidday” and my little tail will wag with delight.

Lots of love,
