The Artists in Communities Program Here and There

A Celebration of Community Engagement and Art

Artist, Pat Beaton and internship artist, Zee Kesler continue to bring this exciting community project to the Sunset Community neighbourhood . COME OUT AN MAKE YOU MARK! Workshops have participants drawing maps of the neighbourhood, maps of imagination, maps of flight and fancy .

Please join us for this next workshop and tell us what defines your neighborhood . The historical house on the corner? A temple or church? The slide in the park? Perhaps it is a local legend…

This project is jointly sponsored by Art & Culture, Parks Board, The Sunset Association and The Thomas family of Delta, BC,

in memory of their father, W . Stan Thomas, founding president of the Sunset Memorial Centre, and Prime Signal Ltd .

Hold That Thought is a neon sign art piece created by the artist Kelly Mark that will hang for 18 months in the windows of the hall, thanks to the VANCOUVER BIENNALE . Find out more about the artist here: www .ireallyshould .com

ABOUT THE VANCOUVER BIENNALEThe Vancouver Biennale is a non-profit organization that mounts bi-annual public art exhibitions, bringing sculptures, new media and performance works by celebrated and emerging international artists to Vancouver and surrounding area parks, beaches and urban plazas . In doing so, the Biennale creates an open-air museum that merges the natural beauty of our landscape and our love of the outdoor recreation with a world-class cultural experience, all contributing to our designation as one of the most livable cities in the world .www .vancouverbiennale .com

President’s MessageIt is both a pleasure and a privilege to be writing this report as

your new Sunset Community Association President . I follow

in the footsteps of a long line of actively dedicated community

mined people and, after several years of committee and Board

work, feel that I am ready for this challenge .

The Olympics are long gone and Sunset Community Centre is no

longer the newest building in the City Of Vancouver Community

Centre network, but we still remain very busy with people from

our local community participating in activities and programs of

all kinds . On Canada Day, even though we had to hold our event indoors, we still

had over 3000 people stroll through our hallways – thank you to everyone for coming

and having a good time .

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff and group of volunteers

for their continued dedication and support . They are the reason we are able to

provide quality programs, for all ages, at reasonable prices, that meet the needs of

our exciting, diverse and ever-changing community . Please feel free to explore our

safe and inviting atmosphere in the centre and perhaps use our fitness centre or take

one of our excellent programs from our talented instructors – you will be glad you did .

I think it is important that you understand the role our Association plays in the operation

of the Sunset Community Centre . (For a more detailed description, please see the full

President’s Message at the Community Centre or go to the link at www .mysunset .net .)

So please take up my offer to visit Sunset Community Centre, the Moberly Arts and

Cultural Centre, and the Sunset Ice Rink . Opportunities abound, friendships await,

and fun can be had by all .

Respectfully submitted . Karl Gulbransen, SCA President
