    The evening sun dipping spectacularlyinto the Indian Ocean gives this regionits evocative name, and its a sight youcan enjoy daily, from any number ofpicturesque locations.

    While the beaches and facilities are inviting,and the weather is exceptional, its rarelycrowded. This area enjoys a wealth of openspace that contributes to a wonderfulsense of relaxation and freedom.

    Getting around the region is easy, withan excellent road system that puts greatbeaches a short drive from the city centre,and the northern limits no more than anhour away. Most places are also accessibleby bus or train.

    Endless, beautiful beaches

    During the warm, dry summer monthsfrom December to February, dailytemperatures average 31C, with warmevenings and little rainfall. Combine thoseconditions with 50 kilometres ofmetropolitan coastline, and the SunsetCoast is the ultimate destination for sunworshippers.

    Everyone will find a beach here to fall inlove with. Hire a car, ride a bike, catch a bus

    or join a tour to explore them. Theyre wellmaintained, and theyre all open to thepublic all year round, free of charge. Manyhave public barbecues and childrensplaygrounds.

    Swim and surf

    Just 20 minutes from the city centre,Scarborough Beachis arguably Perths mostpopular beach. Its well served by publictransport providing easy access for all.

    Trigg Beachis Perths most consistent surfbreak, particularly over summer when it isoften the only beach in the metropolitanarea with a wave breaking. Dont know how

    to surf? You can take a lesson. Some of thebetter known surf breaks include Waterman'sBay, Mettamsand Trigg Pointor ask a friendlylocal and they will be able to tell you whereto find the best waves.

    The City of Stirling has approximately 7.5kmsof coastline under its care. Some of the betterknown swimming bays include Mettams Pool,a popular family location and calm snorkellingspot ideal for children and early morningswimmers of all ages, North BeachandWatermans Bay. Any one of them would bemost peoples idea of a perfect beach, andyou have all of them to choose from.

    There is also a great pathway overlookingthese beaches which is popular with walkersand cyclists wanting to enjoy the fresh airand great coastal views - and of course thebeautiful sunsets in the late afternoon. Thebeaches are all well equipped with facilitiesfrom public showers and restrooms topicnic areas and playgrounds, and most arepatrolled by lifeguards in summer.

    Scarborough is also an excellent location tofind a place to stay: theres a large range ofbeachfront option here, from backpackers,or affordable family apartments to five-starpenthouses. Think of it: you can wake upand walk to the beach before breakfast.

    Get Cultured

    Perhaps before you hit the surf, you mightenjoy getting your bearings at Mt FloraMuseumin North Beach. Its one of thehigher natural points along the SunsetCoast, and it affords some awesome viewsalong the coast to Scarborough and acrossthe suburbs towards Perth. Once you havetaken in the view - head downstairs to theMuseum to discover the rich and diversehistory of the region through photographs,displays, artefacts and stories.

    Eat, Drink and be Entertained

    When youre done surfing or bodyboarding,spend a relaxing hour or two at one of themany cafes or bars overlooking the ocean.With the many new bars, restaurants andcaf's just opened up at ScarboroughBeach - you will be spoilt for choice!Theyre great places to sit with friends andwatch those famous sunsets.     Need to work off some holiday indulgence?Hire a bike in Scarborough and explore thelength of the Sunset Coast on the dual usepaths stretching from Fremantle in the southto Burns Beach in the north.

    Nature lovers and fishing enthusiasts willlove the Marmion Marine Park, stretchingfrom Trigg Island to Burns Beach. Its a richhabitat where the reef forms shallow, crystallagoons. Dolphins can be seen playing here,and sea lions laze nearby on Little Island.

    This area is home to some of our mostintriguing historical sites and many of thestates most pristine and accessible naturereserves. Just north of the city centre youcan explore dunes, limestone cliffs andbushland in national and regional parks.There are beautiful walking trails throughthese parks such as the Yaberoo BudjaraHeritage Trail, which provide plenty ofopportunities to see native flora and fauna.

    Discover ParksAt the most northern reaches of Perth isYanchep National Park, a natural treasurefamous for its scenic beauty, picnic spotsand walk trails, but also for one ofAustralias largest koala colonies and itsprogramme of Aboriginal culturalexperiences. At Wangi Mia(Talking place),local Nyoongar people teach visitors aboutbush tucker, the didgeridoo and traditionaldancing. Yanchep is one of WesternAustralias oldest national parks and is only45 minutes north of Perth city.

    If youre up for a bit of adventure take acave tour to experience the spectacularbeauty of the parks limestone caves. Thecaves in Yanchep National Park compriseone of the six major cave regions of WAand there have been more than 600caves documented in the park.

    This wonderfully green district of Perthsmetropolitan area also offers some veryimpressive blue: at its western edge is thelargest man-made marina in Australia;Mindarie Marina.     Whilst in this northern area of the SunsetCoast, take the time to go fishing in the

    beautiful Yanchep Lagoon. Or head furthernorth again where you will come across TwoRocks, a peaceful coastal community. TwoRocksalso boasts a marina and boat harbourand the coastline is scattered with historicshipwrecks. The maritime history of thiscoast is littered with tales of coming to griefon treacherous reefs. These days, the manyremaining shipwrecks have becomeinteresting historic artefacts and grippingdive locations. At Wreck Point, for instance,you dont even have to get wet to see a wreck:the remains of 1917s Alex T Brown are stillvisible offshore, above the high-water mark.

    USEFULINFORMATION

    The Perth sun can be very strong soalways remember to cover up by wearinga hat, applying sun screen and taking ashade protector.

    Swim between the red and yellow flags on

    a beach. They indicate there is a lifesavingservice operating and the lifeguards havechosen this section of the beach as it hasthe safest swimming conditions.

    Read all warning signs which have beenplaced at the beach. These signs maycontain special warnings or currentconditions regarding the surf.

    Swim with a friend or near otherswimmers, that way if you do get intotrouble you will easily be noticed.

    If you do find yourself caught in a strongcurrent or a rip, do not try to swim againstit, instead save your energy. If you arehaving difficulty in the water, stay calm andraise your arm in the air for help. Lifesavers

    who patrol the beaches are watching thewater and this will gain their attention.

    If you are unsure of the depth of thewater, then do not run and dive into thesurf. If you should accidentally hit asandbank you could be seriously injured.It is much better to enter the surf andcheck the depth of the water first.

    Beach Safety Services

    Every major beach along the Sunset Coast ispatrolled by Surf Lifesaving Guards, so if youare not a good swimmer or are unsure of thesurf conditions, just ask a lifesaver for advice.

    The Sorrento and Mullaloo Surf Life SavingClubs provide lifeguard patrols on weekendsand public holidays, while the City providesmidweek lifeguard patrols during thefollowing hours: Sorrento Beach: 6am- 6pm, Hillarys Marina: 8am - 6pm andMullaloo Beach: 6am - 6pm.
