Dear Friends,

It is our pleasure to present the 2014 Annual Report for Sunset Center. As stewards of this incredible facility – an artistic and community “living room” to so many – we are happy to report on another wonderful season here at the Sunset Community and Cultural Center. Employing his signature mix of optimism, exasperation, and biting comic delivery,

Lewis Black treated audiences to incisive social criticism and wickedly funny stand-up comedy.

JONATHAN BATISTE & THE STAY HUMAN BAND

SUNSET PRESENTS…2013-2014 SEASON

TAO: THE ART OF THE DRUM February 11, 2014

Surely one of the most engaging performances of the season, TAO: The Art of the Drum had guests

riveted. With thunderous drumming as the anchor point, beautiful melodies, visually arresting movement, and colorful sets and costumes

converged to captivate the audience.

AN EVENING WITH WILLIE NELSON & FAMILY

April 10, 2014 A “living legend” if ever there was one,

Willie Nelson gave Sunset Center a show for the history books. Another sold-out performance,

Willie Nelson thrilled long-time fans who traveled a long distance for the concert, and delighted locals who were ecstatic to see the outspoken

and talented Texan icon.

THE FOUR FRESHMEN May 24, 2014

Closing out our 2013-2014 season, The Four Freshmen performed classic love songs and

showcased smooth vocal harmonies. The quartet—considered by many to be the best vocal jazz group today—displayed a modern

twist on a time-honored sound and provided a celebratory denouement to both the season and

our Annual Gala, Mood Indigo: Martinis, Manhattans, and Memories.

STUDIO 105 PRESENTSThe 2013-2014 season also provided us with an opportunity to welcome patrons into our intimate performance space, STUDIO 105.

With a nightclub atmosphere, STUDIO 105 Presents featured three fun and jazzy cabaret acts: Perla Batalla: The Leonard Cohen Songbook, Lee Lessack: From Manhattan to Paris, and Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums. Your feedback about the series was enthusiastically positive, and we look forward to continuing to experiment with new musical genres and art forms in this flexible and welcoming performance space.

Sunset Center CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS

Now entering its seventh year, Classroom Connections  is Sunset Center’s arts-in-education program which brings our featured performers to regional schools. This unique and comprehensive program gives children an intimate, hands-on experience of the connection between  process  and  product. Seeing a finished product—a play or a painting—can be fun and rewarding for a child. Our goal is to empower students by breaking down the process of creating an artistic product step-by-step with the artists themselves.

Classroom Connections is uniquely in-depth; in this rigorous 4-part program, teachers and artists work with students classroom by classroom. By working in individual classrooms, participating educators are able to engage students on an interactive, individual level, in an atmosphere where students feel comfortable. These classroom visits culminate in a matinee performance at Sunset Center for participating students.

2013-2014 CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS PROGRAMSJONATHAN BATISTE & THE STAY HUMAN BAND The jazz musicians visited 375 2nd- and 3rd-graders in two elementary schools, teaching students about the melodic and rhythmic elements of jazz and the variety of instruments the band plays. According to student surveys, only 29% of the students liked jazz music before their experience with this program.  Afterward, that number increased to 92%!

AILEY II Ailey II artists visited 592 upper elementary and middle school students in three schools. Demystifying modern dance, the dancers taught students about the narrative themes of some of the company’s classic choreography, and emphasized the physical training necessary to perform in one of the top dance companies in the country. While 57% of participating students had no idea what modern dance was prior to the program, 79% were interested in learning more about modern dance after visiting with Ailey II. In addition to Classroom Connections, Ailey II conducted a master class for local high school dance students.

“Awesome performance and wonderful experience/exposure for my students!  It destroyed gender/ethnic stereotypes about dance. It gave them exposure to an art form they may not have otherwise had. On a basic level, my students now understand the athletic skill involved and that to be an athlete, one doesn’t have to be in professional sports. This came from feedback from many of my male students.” – Peggy Carroll, Music Director, Washington Middle School

“It was the most wonderful classroom presentation in my 29 years of teaching!

I’ll never forget the smiles on my students’ faces. The students were able to meet and speak with the performers. They learned that music can be a hobby and a career.” – Lisa Yonekura, Mission Park Elementary School teacher

“Jon Batiste, can you teach me

more jazz to show my family?” –2nd grade student,

Mission Park Elementary School

Sunset Center COMMUNITYENGAGEMENT

6

As Sunset Cultural Center, Inc. continues to evolve and grow since our formation as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2003, we endeavor to find new avenues to enrich, educate, inspire, and entertain community members like you. In addition to Classroom Connections and our Sunset Presents performances, Sunset Center provides numerous opportunities throughout the year for the public to engage with ideas and the arts, and share a good time with other members of the community.

As part of our larger programming and outreach efforts, Sunset Center regularly offers free topical seminars to the public through our Educational Series. Made possible by our corporate partner Schwartzel + Sullivan Wealth Management Group, Merrill Lynch, Monterey County residents can learn from local experts about a variety of pertinent issues ranging from smart investing to extraordinary pet care.

During our 2013-2014 season, we presented: Planning for Health Care in Retirement and Long Term Care, The Art of Investing in Art, Securing Your Retirement: A Special Seminar on Social Security, and Through the Eyes of an Animal Communicator.

In addition to producing the Educational Series, we build unique audience engagement opportunities around select Sunset Presents performances. For example, in January of 2014, we brought culinary students from Rancho Cielo Community School to assist celebrity chef Robert Irvine with backstage prep for our performance Robert Irvine LIVE! We also held an intimate, pre-show VIP event for patrons in our STUDIO 105 venue, where attendees enjoyed an exciting glimpse inside Chef Irvine’s cooking process.

As an added component to Dweezil Zappa’s February 2014 Zappa Plays Zappa: Tour de Frank performance, we were very excited to offer “Dweezilla: Learn and Destroy,” a special master guitar class led by Dweezil Zappa himself. For the price of a fuzz pedal, students were able to learn techniques from the son of Frank Zappa. Participants were encouraged to bring their guitars to this interactive session.

“We are new in Carmel and we want to be involved in the community. We love the Educational Series.

The topics are always timely and relevant.” -Sam Fonte, Carmel resident

Sunset Center NORTH WING & MARJORIE EVANS GALLERY

NORTH WING The North Wing of the Sunset Center campus is home to four renovated meeting rooms and an art gallery. Carpenter Hall, Chapman, Babcock, and Bingham Rooms provide space for a variety of public and private functions. Some of the events that took place during the 2013-2014 season include An Artist Retreat with Anna Rhodes (above), the American Federation for Medical Research Western Regional Meeting, and the Carmel International Film Festival. Local groups such as Carmel Public Library Foundation and the City of Carmel Police Department also hold regular meetings, public lectures, and trainings in our facilities. During the fiscal year, we served over 19,700 people in the North Wing. We consider this activity essential to our mission to serve as a multi-purpose gathering place for the community.

MARJORIE EVANS GALLERY Sunset Center supports and promotes local artists and galleries by providing exhibition opportunities in the Marjorie Evans Gallery and in our meeting rooms. The exhibits are offered at no cost to the artists and the community. In our 2013-2014 season, we provided gallery space to nine artists, two local galleries, and a local wreath farm.

Artists display their work for one month in the Marjorie Evans Gallery and may hold a reception. We partner with our gallery sponsor, Sotheby’s International Realty Carmel, to promote the events. Local galleries also display their work quarterly in our meeting rooms. Westbrook Galleries, Gallery 21, New Masters Gallery, Zantman Art Galleries and artist Jacquelyn Coleman graciously loaned artwork to Sunset Center during the 2013-2014 season. GALLERY HIGHLIGHTS SEPTEMBER Remembering Spring, Jacquelyn Coleman (watercolor) Jacquelyn Coleman’s exhibition of paintings showcased a California style of watercolor painting, which was part of the American Scene or Regionalist movement. Jacquelyn also showed her work in our Marjorie Evans Gallery in 2011, and contributed an original watercolor rendering of Sunset Center that we continue to use on note cards and other communication.

JANUARY Mysterious Ireland-Irish Poetry and Mythology, Elizabeth Wrightman (acrylic, collage, pastels) The work in Carmel resident Elizabeth Wrightman’s exhibition of abstract expressionism was inspired by Celtic Ireland’s poetry and prose, as well as folklore, mythology, and Elizabeth’s own dreams. The ‘presence’ of nature, such as weather, trees, and animals, came through strongly in this enchanting show.

“It was one of the high points of my life to be able to show at Sunset Center. The night of my reception was a magical night in a magical setting. It was a very positive experience for me and my work.” -Elizabeth Wrightman

Sunset Center SUPPORTERSWe’re so grateful for your support of Sunset Center. Whether you’ve joined our Bravo! Membership program, volunteered your time, attended the gala, donated to us directly or through Monterey County Gives!, or visited the Center, you’ve made a difference.

VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of Sunset Center. Each volunteer donates at least 8 hours of their time per month to the Center. The people who tear your tickets and guide you to your seats in the theater are all volunteers. Dedicated community members also help in the administrative office, greet guests in the gallery and theater, and serve as ambassadors for Sunset Center.

The Volunteer Ambassador program began in 2013 to offer a subset of our volunteers a deeper understanding of Sunset Center. Upon completion of specialized training, Ambassadors are able to assist with patron questions and concerns and spread the word about Sunset Center in the community. The first group of Volunteer Ambassadors graduated in September 2014.

“I’ve always loved live theater and live performances, so Sunset Center is perfect for me. I volunteer and am a Bravo! Member because I like the people here, and I like giving back to the community. Both allow me to support Sunset Center and share the experience with like-minded people.”-Roberta Dooley, Sunset Center Volunteer and Bravo! Member

BRAVO! Sunset Center provides a unique opportunity for arts lovers to engage more deeply with each other and the Center through the Bravo! Membership Program. Our members gain access to exclusive benefits as well as one-of-a-kind opportunities to socialize with other arts supporters.

Our membership program, Bravo!, grew from just 28 members in September 2011 to nearly 400 members by June 2014. This increase in popularity can be attributed to the contagious enthusiasm of Bravo! members, as well as enhanced member benefits. The Bravo! program offers tiered pricing that facilitates membership on any budget, offering a variety of benefits at each level. To learn more or join the Bravo! Membership Program, visit www.sunsetcenter.org/bravo.

GALA

Participation and support from our community made Sunset Center’s Second Annual Gala a huge success, with contributions from donors and sponsors totaling $180,000. The event would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our gala committee, which included board, community, and staff members. The event’s theme was Mood Indigo: Martinis, Manhattans, and Memories, and featured a four-course dinner prepared by Grasing’s Coastal Cuisine with exclusive Hahn Estates wine pairings, signature martini and manhattan cocktails, an exciting live auction, unique table gifts, and a post-performance reception with The Four Freshmen.

“I support Sunset Center because it is the nexus of uplifting cultural activity on the Monterey Peninsula and for Central California.  And we all know that ticket income alone cannot underwrite the expense of presenting performing artists of such quality, diversity and professionalism.  For its continuance and growth, together, we must support Sunset Center.”- Woody Beville, Board Chair, Carmel International Film Festival

Support Us!Sunset Center wouldn’t be able to fulfill its mission of enriching, educating, inspiring, and entertaining without your continued support. Through your donations, we’re able to promote arts in our community by bringing world-class performers to the Central Coast, provide thousands of young people in Monterey County with access to the performing arts, and support local artists in a variety of ways.

Every dollar makes a difference. If you’re interested in partnering with us, please visit www.sunsetcenter.org/donate, call 831.620.2040, or email [email protected].
