Creative and Practical Arts

Festival of the Arts

On Thursday 8 September the Creative and Practical Artsfaculty held their Festival of the Arts at Sunnybank SHS. Theafternoon and evening was a celebration and showcase of allthe great work of students from across the faculty. This year’sformat was a little different from past years, with a festival feeland various mini-stages set up for our performers.

There was a lot of preparation in the lead up to the festival. The Practical Arts staff, led by Miss Platt and ably assisted bythe senior ITU classes, created an installation canopy whichwas a fantastic feature. The giant canopy was a hit with silverstreamers blowing with the wind and catching the sun as itset. The Drama department ran their dress rehearsal of “PrizeFighter” for the year 12s on the Wednesday and other subjectsconstructed exhibition and performance spaces throughout theThursday.

The afternoon started with “Catchpole” a young local band whokicked off the festival with a vibrant and loud 5:00pm set. Thiswas followed by performances from our Instrumental Musicstudents showing their percussion skills with Mr Stiller and theconcert band students with Miss Lowe and Miss Matthews. Itis great to see these students perfecting their instrumental skillsand we hope to grow this department next year. The SunnyArt exhibition space in the hall showcased the work of our year7 to 12 Visual Arts students. This work included 2D, 3D aswell as graphic design work from across the year levels. Ouryear 12 Music students also helped to add ambience to theexhibition by entertaining the visiting crowd. Vivid projectionsshowed all the highlights and funny moments from across thedifferent subjects and allowed us to see the specialist workbeing created by our students as performers, engineers, designers, film-makers, musicians and trades men and women. It was fantastic to see such a diverse range of talent with ourstudent population.

The culmination of the night was the year 12 Drama and DramaStudies performance of “Prize Fighter” at the Ringside stage. After the success of the dress rehearsal, the cast was eagerand ready to impress the audience. In particular the studentswere keen to impress “Prize Fighter” playwright, Future Fidel,a past Sunnybank student. What made this even more specialwas the fact that this was the first performance of the playsince its debut at Brisbane Festival in 2015, a real achievementfor our year 12s who worked tirelessly throughout the term todo justice to this confronting and powerful play. This year’sperformance was also slightly different, as Miss Kalamafoni wasalso part of the cast standing in for one of the students.

The Festival of the Arts was a great success! The exhibitionand performance spaces were creative and a real treat for the

2

visiting audiences. A speak thank you to all the various staff whoassisted with the set-up and pack downs, the Practical Artsstaff who ran the BBQ, Mrs Garbutt and her children for beingour popcorn chefs and all the teachers who organised all thestages and performances and exhibitions. We look forward todoing it all again in 2017!

Performing Arts Evening – Year 11 IndustrialTechnology Studies

The Industrial Technology and Design department was workinghard all last term in preparation for the Performing Arts Eveningin September. The year 11 Industrial Technology Studies classwere in charge of designing and constructing a kinaestheticinstallation for the benefit of those who came to the evening. Itwas a huge effort by all to finish the job, and to lift it into place.Thank you to all those involved in the construction and hoistingof the Liquid Shard, and congratulations to the 11 IndustrialTechnology Studies class for a fantastic installation piece.

Performing Arts Evening – Year 10 Graphics

The year 10 Graphics classes have been working through anIndustrial Design Unit where they had been asked by IKEA toredesign a lamp. The students worked through a number ofnumeracy activities to design and construct their lamps. Thestudents took advantage of the new Trotec Laser Cutter whichhas been recently bought for Sunnybank State High Schoolto quickly and efficiently laser-cut their lamps. These lampswere put on display for the Performing Arts Evening, wherethe students could see all of their hard work lit up and lookingfantastic.

Windmill Design and Construction – Year 10Industrial Technology and Design

Term three saw the year 10 Industrial Technology and Designstudents building on their design and construction experiencewith the Windmill project. Students used a wood lathe for thefirst time, to turn a windmill stem, each with their own individualdesign. Students added to their electronics knowledge bywiring up an AA battery, small DC motor and Wheat Grass Lightto finish off their windmill designs. Students had a fantastic timewith this project, with almost complete creative freedom, andmany outstanding windmills made.

Built Environment Unit – Year 11 Graphics

The year 11 Graphics students are coming to the end of their16 week assessment, Built Environment – The Bookshop, andare producing outstanding work which they should be veryproud of. Students started this assignment with a site visitto Brisbane CBD and produced a number of maps to helpdetermine the best site for their bookshop. They used Google

Sketch Up to draw their bookshops, Adobe Photoshop topublish their finished drawings and Adobe Illustrator to producetheir design folios. From this assessment students have learntthe fundamentals of Architectural Design, including theprocesses required to move an idea from initial analysis ofsite, concept stage, mock modelling, final ideas and finallypresenting their work in a number of presentation boards to apanel of Industry Experts in the first week of term four.

Thank you

The Industrial Technology and Design Department would liketo thank Catchpole for volunteering their time and wonderfultalents at the Performing Arts Evening in September.
