SUNDERLAND – CLUB HISTORYMANAGER’S VIEW – JORDAN WIMPENNY
Sunderland AFC Ladies were formed in 2000, moving to Wearside after 11 years as The Kestrels. The club has won the nation’s second flight on seven occasions, the first being as The Kestrels in 1999/2000. The Black Cats went on to win the FA Women’s Premier League North in 2004/05 and 2008/09, also reaching the FA Cup final in the latter where they finished runners-up to Arsenal.
After the foundation of the Women’s Super League, the club won the FA Women’s Premier League National Division three times, in 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13 when they were elected to play in the newly formed FA Women’s Super League 2. Winning WSL 2 at the first attempt in 2014, the club enjoyed four seasons in the top flight.
However, after an unsuccessful bid to be part of the restructured FA WSL or FA Women’s Championship, the club look to rebuild from the third tier. The club finished second in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier in 2018/19 and were leading the 2019/20 season when the league results were expunged due to the Covid Pandemic.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to our 2nd home league fixture of the new campaign. With a solid performance from the team on Wednesday evening we will look to continue this again today against Sunderland. As a group, we showed a great desire to compete, work for one another and pull together to win the game. We know that each game we play will have new challenges for us as a group and we will look to overcome these against a Sunderland side who will also want to try and take the game.
We want to showcase to you all our identity and playing style that we have adapted to very well and with the league being so open, claim those all important 3 points to build on from Wednesday.
Thanks Jordan

Huddersfield Town Women are delighted to announce their partnership with Kenyon Weston as their kit sponsor for the 2020/21 season.Kenyon Weston sponsored Town Women’s u10’s in the 2019/20 campaign and made the decision to sponsor all youth and senior teams ahead of this weekend’s opening round of league fixtures.
Co-founder, Matthew Kenyon, is thrilled to announce the partnership.
“We are really excited to be partnering with HTWFC and glad the opportunity came. Many thanks to Rachael Wilkinson and David Mallin for making it happen. It’s great to help the teams with sponsorship and, from the partnership so far, I think the sponsorship has been well received.”
“Helping the teams through sponsorship was/is more important to us than people of Huddersfield knowing our business. Knowing we have helped is great!
Founded in 2016, Kenyon Weston is a Huddersfield-based independent design studio that produces brand, industrial and graphic design for its global clientele.
Some of their largest projects include: the redesign of Diet Coke in North America and the worldwide identity of the Coca-Cola 2018 FIFA World Cup partnership.
Town Women Chairman David Mallin believes the sponsorship symbolises the club’s ambition to grow commercially off the pitch, as well as on it.
“We are delighted to announce the fantastic whole-club shirt sponsorship which will help us expand our reach off the pitch whilst we continue to grow on it, too.
“Kenyon Weston became one of our junior team sponsors at the start of last season and they’ve been very supportive. When they indicated that they’d like to get more involved with the club as a whole, we had no hesitation in coming to an agreement which benefits both parties greatly.”
Huddersfield Town Chief Executive Mark Devlin added:
“It’s fantastic news that our Women’s team has secured this deal. With the difficulties of the financial climate during the pandemic, I think it is a great demonstration that interest in the Women’s game is growing stronger and stronger.
“The progress that our Women’s team has made over the last few years has been really impressive and this is another step forward.
“I would also like to thank Kenyon Weston, who have been a supporter of the Club over a sustained period of time now; their support is truly appreciated.”

FA WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE - NORTHERN DIVISIONLEAGUE TABLE 2020/2021
FA WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE
Hull City 1 - Huddersfield Town 2Laura Elford’s brace saw Huddersfield Town Women overcome a stubborn Hull City Ladies side as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Haworth Park on Wednesday night.
The victory was Town’s first of the season and, having only picked up one point from their previous two matches, assistant manager Marcus Wilkinson knows just how important those three points are.
“It’s a massive win. We thought we should have had three points in another game already this season, but to come here and battle for the win like we did means we’ve got to give full credit to the players.”
The Terriers started strongly, playing on the front foot, and almost took the lead when Kate Mallin’s free kick from wide whipped towards the far post in the swirling wind, but Hull’s ‘keeper managed to turn the ball away.
It was an even first half in terms of chances with neither side carving the other open but the hosts took the lead on the half hour mark.
Having made a great save with her feet moments earlier, goalkeeper Bethan Davies faced a penalty when a Hull player was brought down inside the area, but the Terriers’ no.1 couldn’t stop the well-placed spot kick as Hull struck first.
That, however, was as good as it got for the Tigresses. From then on, Town had the bit between their teeth and it wasn’t long before they equalised.
Another Mallin cross just evaded bodies in the six-yard box, but fell to Sarah Danby just beyond the far post. The ex-Sunderland player fainted to go inside before dragging the ball onto her right foot at the by-line and delivering a brilliant cross which was met by the head of Laura Elford. The striker’s looping header dropped into the netting inside the left-hand post and Town had a well-deserved equaliser.
Despite conceding first for a third successive game this season, the Terriers were the dominant force in the opening forty-five minutes and could have been ahead at the break, so it was no surprise to see them control the second half, too.
Katie Nutter replaced Brittany Sanderson during
the interval as manager Jordan Wimpenny looked to add a bit more creativity in midfield, leaving more space out wide, and boy did it pay off.
Less than ten minutes into the half, we had the lead.
A brilliant through ball found Mallin’s run down the left flank and the player who scored our first goal of the season against Fylde raced to the by-line, drew the ‘keeper out of her goal and laid the ball on a plate for Elford to turn it home for her second of the evening – marking her first start of the campaign in style.
From then on, the home side had no answer to the Terriers’ controlled passing play and the introductions of Serena Fletcher and Ella Harris as the clock ticked to eighty added pace and fresh legs in a big to wrap up the win
By this point, it was one-way traffic and Town thought they’d sealed the three points when the ball dropped over the goal line but the officials failed to spot it, the ball was cleared for a corner and the goal wasn’t given.
This, though, inflicted no long-lasting harm to the result as the Terriers saw out what was an invaluable three points in their bid to catch those at the top of the table – which was helped by Fylde’s victory over Burnley by the same scoreline.
Wilkinson, however, isn’t concerned of other teams’ results so early on in the season.
“We’ve got to stay concentrated on ourselves and keep ticking over, make sure our own performances are good enough to win games and get three points like we did tonight.”
Town host last 2019/20’s runaway leaders Sunderland Ladies on Sunday in a titanic clash on Sunday. Having fallen to a 3-2 defeat in the fixture last season, Wilkinson knows the players will be chomping at the bit to put another three points to their name.
“It’s going to be another great game. We were flat after Burnley, but we picked ourselves up to go again and we’re determined to do the same against Sunderland at the Stafflex on Sunday.”
