Opening Prayer

O Godour life, our health, our salvation, look with mercy on your people.Stir up in us a saving faith, that believing, we may be healed, and being healed, we may worthily give you thanks.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Sonwho lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,God forever and ever.

Introit

Hymn 6

Now that the daylight fills the sky,we lift our hearts to God on high, that he, in all we do or say, would keep us free from harm this day.

May he restrain our tongues from strife, and shield from anger’s din our life, and guard with watchful care our eyesfrom earth’s absorbing vanities.

O may our inmost hearts be pure, from thoughts of folly kept secure, and pride of sinful flesh subduedthrough sparing use of daily food.

So we, when this day’s work is o’er,and shades of night return once more, our path of trial safely trod, shall give the glory to our God.

All praise to God, the Father, be,all praise, Eternal Son, to thee, whom with the Spirit we adorefor ever and for evermore.

These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

2 Kings 5:1-3, 7-15cNaaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favour with his master, because by him the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman's wife. She said to her mistress, "If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy." When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, "Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me." But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, "Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel." So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha's house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean." But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, "I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?" He turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, "Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, 'Wash, and be clean'?" So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean. Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company; he came and stood before him and said, "Now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel."

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.

2 Great are the deeds of the LORD! * they are studied by all who delight in them.

3 His work is full of majesty and splendour, * and his righteousness endures for ever.

4 He makes his marvellous works to be remembered; * the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.

5 He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations.

7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure.

8 They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity.

9 He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant for ever; * holy and awesome is his Name.

10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; * those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures for ever.

Second Reading

2 Timothy 2:8-15 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also

obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself. Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth.

Luke 17:11-19 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" Then he said to him, "Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well."

Sermon

Nicene CreedWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is seen or unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

We believe in one holy catholic

and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.Amen.

Stand up and bless the Lord, ye people of his choice; stand up and bless the Lord your God with heart and soul and voice.

Though high above all praise, above all blessing high, who would not fear his holy name, and laud and magnify?

O for the living flame from his own altar brought, to touch our lips, our minds inspire, and wing to heaven our thought!

God is our strength and song, and his salvation ours; then be his love in Christ proclaimed with all our ransomed powers.

Stand up and bless the Lord, the Lord your God adore; stand up and bless his glorious name, henceforth for evermore.

Hymn 522

I am thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice, and it told thy love to me;but I long to rise in the arms of faith, and be closer drawn to thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to thy service, Lord, by the power of grace divine;let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, and my will be lost in thine.

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,

to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

Oh, the pure delight of a single hour that before thy throne I spend, when I kneel in prayer, and with thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend!

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

There are depths of love that I cannot know till I cross the narrow sea;there are heights of joy that I may not reach till I rest in peace with thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

My God, accept my heart this day, and make it always thine, that I from thee no more may stray, no more from thee decline.

Anoint me with thy heavenly grace, and seal me for thine own;that I may see thy glorious face,

and worship near thy throne.

Let every thought, and work, and word to thee be ever given:then life shall be thy service, Lord, and death the gate of heaven.

Hymn 625

We come as guests invited when Jesus bids us dine, his friends on earth united to share the bread and wine;the bread of life is broken, the wine is freely pouredfor us, in solemn token of Christ our dying Lord.

We eat and drink, receiving from Christ the grace we need, and in our hearts believing on him by faith we feed;with wonder and thanksgiving for love that knows no end,we find in Jesus living our ever-present friend.

One bread is ours for sharing, one single fruitful vine, our fellowship declaring renewed in bread and wine:renewed, sustained and given by token, sign and word, the pledge and seal of heaven, the love of Christ our Lord.

Hymn 615

O thou, before the world began, ordained a sacrifice for man, and by the Eternal Spirit made an offering for the sinner’s stead; our everlasting priest art thou, pleading thy death for sinners now.

Thy offering still continues new before the righteous Father’s view; thyself the Lamb for ever slain, thy priesthood doth unchanged remain; thy years, O God, can never fail, nor thy blest work within the veil.

O that our faith may never move, but stand unshaken as thy love! Sure evidence of things unseen, now let it pass the years between, and view thee bleeding on the tree, my Lord, my God, who dies for me.

Hymn 661

Morning has broken like the first morning, blackbird has spoken like the first bird.Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word!

Sweet the rain’s new fall sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass.Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass.

Recessional Hymn

Hymn 416

I, the Lord of sea and sky,I have heard my people cry.All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save.I, who made the stars of night,I will make their darkness bright.Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me.I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,I have borne my people’s pain.I have wept for love of them, they turn away.I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me.I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of wind and flame,I will tend the poor and lame.I will set a feast for them, my hand will save.Finest bread I will providetill their hearts be satisfied,I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me.I will hold your people in my heart.
