“Atheists and Agnostics” Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5
One of the things I know about unbelievers is this: an atheist says he knows there is no God, while an agnostic isn’t quite so sure. There are two things that which seem to be true about agnostics and atheists:
1. None of them are saved. 2. There are more of them today than there used to be. That last statement is not based on a personal observation but
comes from the Barna Group’s 2015 study on the state of atheism in America. After consulting more than 20,000 unchurched people, Barna found that 25% considered themselves to be agnostic or atheist.
Barna also found out some other interesting things. For example, they discovered young people were more frequent doubters than the elderly. Barna found that folks with college degrees were more likely to be skeptics of the faith, and one- third of the intellectual unbelievers had never attended a Christian church service.
Perhaps the most pertinent discovery learned from our unsaved brothers and sisters was the two greatest reasons given as why they don’t believe.
Those reasons are; Rejection of the Bible, which they consider to be a regular
book filled with interesting stories and lack of confidence in the church as an institution.
Now take those two reasons, put them on the stove, boil them down, and you will find the heart and soul of the unbeliever’s problem is that they “don’t trust!”
That’s not too surprising, is it? People don’t trust the president, Congress, the Supreme Court; many people don’t trust the police or the judicial system, and they have never trusted advertisers.
It is really sad when they don’t trust the LORD or HIS HOLY WORD. It is even more sad that they usually do so without having given either a chance. They meet a grumpy Christian and they write off Christ. They hear about a pastor or priest who sinned and they write off the church. They hear some scholar take a shot at the truth of God’s Word and they disregard HOLY SCRIPTURE.
Far better they trust the Lord over their own wisdom and understanding.
These comments were taken from a recent Lutheran Hour devotion! What are we as members and friends of Grace

Lutheran Church going to do with this information? We must continue to promote our church as being grounded in God’s Word! We do not want to present ourselves to the community as “grumpy Christians!” We are to proclaim God’s truth which HE has given us; that truth being that God has loved them and made it possible that, with faith in HIS crucified and risen Son, their sins will be forgiven and they will always have something and someone to hold on to; something and someone that they can truly trust!

Upcoming Events
Clinton Zone Spring Rally
Grace Gotoski and Mary Garlough attended the Clinton Zone Spring Rally which was held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden on Saturday, April 11, 2015. The guest speaker was Mary Lu Konrad. She and her husband (and children) served as missionaries in Africa for many years. Their missions were funded with LWML grants. For the ingathering, a free will offering was taken ($80) to help pay for the zone delegate to attend the district convention in Des Moines. Changes to the Zone By-laws were proposed. The changes will be submitted to the District Board for approval and then brought back to the Zone for voting and accepting the changes. Upon the Zone’s approval, we will then update Grace Lutheran Women’s by-laws. A copy of the minutes from the April 11th meeting is posted on the bulletin board in the basement.
Retired Teachers Luncheon
On May 9th, LWML will serve lunch to the Retired Teachers Group. Lee Schmidt is chairing this event; so, if you would like to provide food or help serve, please contact Lee.
Sugar Cookie Baking-Decorating
May 9th we will gather with Val Betz in her high school room to make and bake approximately 200 BIG sugar cookies. That afternoon we will gather at the church to decorate and bag the cookies. AND, then, on May 10th we will hold a sugar cookie sale in the church foyer. Each cookie will be sold for $1. Please join us in baking and/or decorating these cookies for the LWML fundraiser! Contact Mary Garlough or Val Betz.

Fundraiser Sunday, May 10th
Sugar Cookies for $1.00
LWML Mission Guild will be selling decorated sugar
cookies in the church foyer on Mother’s Day. This
would be a great time to purchase a cookie or two for
your mom, grandma and/or spouse to show them your
appreciation for all they do throughout the year. But
don’t forget the rest of the family they all deserve an
extra treat every now and again.
When we give faithfully and generously, we demonstrate God’s redeeming grace that is alive and well within
us. Because of God’s grace, we are empowered to give. Our giving is a spiritual response to God out of gratitude for all that He has done for us. Giving in response to God’s love should be our primary motive for
giving. Giving to meet our church’s budget is important, but it should not be our primary reason for giving.
Through the giving of our first and best to the Lord, we worship and honor Him.
Spring Cleaning? If so, the luminary would take any working Christmas lights, rope light trees, drop cords, light-up deer, and/or the old wooden sleds with steel runners. If you have any of these items, please drop them off in the milk jug box next to the stage in the church basement or give Jessica Sunday a call at 563-613-2752. Thanks for your help and happy dusting!
Stewardship Corner In discussing tithing, giving ten percent of our incomes, the question that is often asked is, “Should my giving be based on my gross or net income?” Proverbs 3:9 will help us answer that question: “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.” Based on this as well as other verses, we can understand that the tithe should be based on our gross incomes. The reference to “your wealth” implies that we need to honor God with all that we have.
NEWS FROM THE PARISH NURSE: May is Older American Month and I will share some information specific to the older adult (which might be you or a family member!). The information is partly based on “The State of Aging and Health in America 2013,” a document that focuses on the health of adults aged 65 years or older in the United States and was supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
I believe we can agree that we do want to live longer; but, we also want to be as healthy and as able as possible. National Health goals in relation to the leading chronic diseases (Heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and others) focus on decreasing deaths but also decreasing disability (and promoting quality of life for the years we have). "Death is unavoidable, but the prevalence of chronic illnesses and the decline and disability commonly associated with it can be reduced." Although many of the personal habits that help to delay death and/or decrease disability are most effective if begun as early as childhood, there are still benefits when healthy habits are adopted at any later age. "Regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do for their health. Physical activity can prevent many of the health problems that may come with age. According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, older adults need to do two types of physical activity each week to improve health—aerobic and muscle-strengthening. Strong evidence shows that regular physical activity is safe and reduces the risk of falls among older adults. Older adults at risk of falling should do exercises that maintain or improve their balance. For best results, they should do these exercises at least 3 days a week from a program shown to reduce falls." (p. 27) Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is another habit that helps delay death and disability. Quitting smoking, if you are still a smoker, is another personal habit that can make a difference. [If you or a loved one smokes and you need help to quit, there are many helps -- contact me for more information.] Maintaining or reaching toward a healthy body weight is another way to help. Controlling blood pressure and being wise in choices of foods with high sodium content are also habits that impact delaying death and disability.
Perhaps the question that needs to be addressed is: How can we help each other to adopt healthy habits? As a congregation, and as a community, can we work in encouraging more exercise, healthy eating, quitting smoking, being consistent in taking appropriate medications (especially those that keep blood pressure controlled), and being aware of how much salt or sodium is included in your daily diet.
If you have suggestions related to helping all of us to choose healthier ways of living, please feel free to contact me.

Storm Season is Upon Us; Facing the Storms of Life!
On the high plains of North America, there is a lesson to be learned by observing the behavior of cattle and buffalo when they are confronted with the prospect of a severe storm. The herd of cattle will as a group attempt to run away from the oncoming storm. Ranchers lose scores of cattle each year due to their futile attempts at flight. The storms overtake the herd despite the herd's best effort at out - running the storms and greater suffering occurs. In contrast, a herd of buffalo seems to recognize instinctively that a crisis must be confronted head on if it is to be survived. When storms pop up on the plains, the buffalo turn resolutely to face it, put their heads down, and walk through it. As a result, fewer buffalo die in storms than cattle.
The Moral of the story! As Christians we do not need to be afraid of the storms that we face in life. We have the power of the Holy Spirit within us to allow us to resolutely set our faces toward the problematic storm. By facing the storm head-on with Jesus, we have nothing to fear.
The last month of the school year has arrived! The year has gone by quickly and it is hard to believe that we are wrapping up our sixth year! We will finish up our study on “Bugs” and the last weeks we will emphasize “Summer Fun.”
There are eighteen 4s who will be graduating on Wednesday, May 27th at 6:30. This is our largest class yet! The last day of school for them will be Friday, May 29th. The T-F 3s will end on May 26th and the M-Th 3s will have their last day on the 28th.
Cindy Sperry has accepted the position of director/teacher at St. John’s Lutheran in Clinton. The preschool will be accepting applications for an associate through June 30th. Exact days and hours will be determined by enrollment before classes begin in the school district on August 24th.

Giving Sacrificially
A husband and wife, who were traveling around the world, saw a boy in Korea one day pulling a crude plow in a field, while an old man held the plow handles and directed it through the rice paddy. The husband was amused by the sight and took a snapshot of the scene.
“That’s very curious,” he remarked to the missionary who was their interpreter and guide. “I suppose they are poor.”
“Yes,” said the missionary. “That is the family of Chi Noui. When the church was built they were eager to give something to it, but they had no money, so they sold the only ox they had and gave the money to the church. This spring they are pulling the plow themselves.”
The husband and wife were silent. Then the wife said, “That was a real sacrifice.”
“They did not call it that,” said the missionary. “They thought it was fortunate they had an ox to sell.”
The two tourists had not much to say, but, when they reached home, they took the photograph to the church and told their pastor about the incident. “We want to double our pledge to the church,” they said, “and give us some plow work to do. We never knew what gratitude or joy or sacrifice really meant until now.”
God spoke to this couple through their experience in Korea about the joy that comes from giving. In His Word, God speaks to all of us about the importance of giving. Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). He also said, “Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8). If we choose not to give faithfully and generously, we forego the blessings that God gives to those who give cheerfully. There is no better time than now to examine your level of giving, and, if need be, to take a leap of faith and increase your giving. In the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”
There are many ways to assist your church. One of those ways is to vol-unteer with the audio visual needs during church services. Training is provided to all our A/V Technicians and does not take a lot of time. Please prayerfully consider using your time and talent to help your church during worship by providing this very important service. If you have any questions regarding what an A/V Technician’s duties are, please call the church office.
National Military Appreciation Month May is National Military Appreciation month, a time to recognize and honor all men and
women of our U.S. Armed Forces who have served throughout history and are serving
today. It is also a time to remember those who have given their lives for our freedom.
During this special month, express your appreciation for our service members by
providing them with a Military BibleStick. This small digital audio player is designed specifically for the use of deployed troops. Each one includes the com‐
plete Audio New Testament along with 65 minutes of selected Psalms.
On Sunday May 17th and May 31st our Mission focus will be to support our troops at home
and abroad by collecting money so that we can provide financial support to send BibleSticks
to our troops. Each BibleStick includes a response card offering FREE audio Drama Bibles
to loved ones at home, so support is offered to the entire family.
Faith Comes By Hearing has provided more than 500,000 Military BibleSticks to chaplains who share them with our troops from all branches of service.
Place your donation in the “little white” church on Sunday, May 17th and May 31st and help
us provide spiritual support for our military troops and their families.
