This fall, we will connue to wrestle with our call as people of faith - to strive for jusce and peace, and to respect the dignity of every human being - in our local and naonal context. This is how we respond to God’s love for us: by seeking to do our part to transform what is broken, what is in error, what is degrading and demoralizing in how we treat one another, and in how our society engages us and our neighbor. This is not work that we can do alone, it is larger than any one of us. But our voices together, our hands together, our incredible minds together can make an amazing difference and trans- form what is broken. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for jusce and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human beings? We will, with God’s help. So, I hope that you have taken some me to rest this summer because we need your energy and engagement. We have work to do!

This summer my family went camping at Jekyll Island. The kids and I completely unplugged from the world – no iPads, no technology – and we played in the sand, went swimming in the ocean, stared at the horizon, and were “just” together. It was really a restorative time for us. It was the morning of our third day there when I had the realization that I had not thought about a single thing for several days. Not a single worry had bubbled up to occupy my mind, I wasn’t thinking about the next

thing, the next task, all my “to do’s.” I was just there feet in the sand, face turned up to the sun. And, at night, I slept hard. My mind and my body needed that rest, the chance to completely disengage and recharge. That sort of rest is so vital in nurturing the spirit. We all need time to rest from all our labors, so that we can come back ready to face a new day with its new challenges.

I hope that you have had a chance this summer to recharge your body, mind, and spirit AND that you are ready to continue our work together: seeking and serving Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors, and loving ourselves. It is very appar-ent, from the continuing violence this summer to the low level of discourse in the presidential campaign, that we have a lot of work to do. This fall, we will continue to wrestle with our call as people of faith - to strive for justice and peace, and to respect the dignity of every human being - in our local and national context. This is how we respond to God’s love for us: by seeking to do our part to transform what is broken, what is in error, what is degrading and demoralizing in how we treat one another, and in how our society engages us and our neighbor. This is not work that we can do alone, it is larger than any one of us. But our voices together, our hands together, our incredible minds together can make an amazing difference and trans-form what is broken.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human beings?

We will, with God’s help.

So, I hope that you have taken some time to rest this summer because we need your energy and engagement. We have work to do!

Thanks to all who pitched in at the Sandwich Build for Crossroads!

St. Luke’s at the Interfaith Build

Dearest Mo. Lauren,

Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such generous organization asHabitat for Humanity. I’ve been volunteering at different places sin ce I was ten years old. My first volunteer job was as a T.A. at a kindergarten in Los Angeles when I first arrived in the US and could not speak a word of English. My last volunteer job was at Egleston-Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where again I helped in a schoolroom for a year before being transferred to rock newborns in the NICU. I stayed there for about five years.

Ever since I heard about Habitat for Humanity, I had the urge to be a part of it but never had. I don’t have much construction experience but I have the muscle and passion to help others in need and that’s the motivation to drive a volunteer. Building this house was an amazing experience from beginning to end. I loved it so much and I want to go back to help complete this particular house, which is only five more Sundays. I was very surprised to hear that a house is built in only seven working days.

I was assigned to install the roof, it was very hot and I was exhausted at the end of the day but felt rewarded. Lunch was cooked by a woman from Somalia and was delicious. I met the future homeowners and took a picture with them to share with you. I spoke to Audrey, another volunteer, who shared with me that the coolest thing was that everyone got to write prayers or positive words on the materials before they got sent to the construction site.

Mario was one of five volunteers from St. Luke’s on our first Sunday helping.

Friday, September 9 at 7 p.m.This month we're screening the first film in the Apu Trilogy, Pather Panchali (1955). The Apu Trilogy brought India into the golden age of international art-house film, following one indelible character, a free-spirited child in rural Bengal who matures into an adoles-

cent urban student and finally a sensitive man of the world. This first film is a depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian neorealism. This naturalistic but poetic evocation of a number of years in the life of a family introduces us to both little Apu and, just as essentially, the women who will help shape him. Faith and Film is a monthly opportunity for St. Luke’s adults to share a movie, snacks, fellowship, and a lively discussion of issues of faith raised by the film. Those who attend bring a snack to share and a beverage. All St. Luke’s adults are welcome. For location, contact Donna Church (404-522-3889 | [email protected]).

ST. ARNOLD’S GUILD meets Thursday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Twain’s (211 E Trinity Pl, Decatur). St. Arnold’s is a group of young adults who meet monthly for conversation over some of Atlanta’s best beer offerings. Join us! Questions? Con-tact Megan Petenbrink (404-873-7633 | [email protected]) or Jimmy Satterwhite ([email protected]).

ADULT CHOIR REHEARSAL resumes on Wednesday, Sep-tember 7 at 7:20 p.m. in the Choir Room.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VESTRY are sought by the Nominating Committee which is charged with putting together a slate of four nominees. Kate Kennedy is the committee chair. Members of the committee include: Ann Cramer, David Gillon, Jackson Kane, Jeff Muscarella Melba Hughes and John Zintak. If you have a suggestion please speak with Kate or another mem-ber of the committee.

THANKS FROM MAC

To our friends at St Luke’s:

We wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks for all your support with the Summer Spirit Food Drive for Midtown As-sistance Center (MAC). The response we received from your church was overwhelming, and the food is certainly needed these summer months. As some may know, food pantries across the nation struggle to keep food on their shelves in the summer months. Each summer we have to decide which fami-ly gets the last box of cereal, or the last jar of peanut butter. Thanks to YOUR help, we did not have to make that decision this year. Your donations helped well over a hundred individu-als from going hungry this summer.

Thirty years ago, St Luke’s joined four other congregations to establish the Midtown Assistance Center, an interfaith non-profit committed to helping Atlanta’s working poor. We are so thankful St. Luke’s is with us to this day.

For more information about MAC or to learn more on how to get involved, visit our website at www.midtownassistan-cectr.org or follow our Facebook page. We are so grateful.

Thank you, thank you, and God Bless,Rebecca Richard, PartnershipsMidtown Assistance Center
