POINT OF CONTACT: I want to show you something very special this morning. These are my sneakers. How many of you

have a pair of sneakers? I want you to pretend that these sneakers are magic sneakers. Let me tell you what my magic sneakers

will do for you. If you go out to play a game of kickball, and you are wearing my magic sneakers, you will never lose. How

about that! If you will wear my magic sneakers when you play a game of tag, you will win every time. If you wear these

magic sneakers when you play a game of basketball, you will win every single game. These magic sneakers will even work

for games where you sit still. If you wear them while you play a game of checkers, you will win every checker game. What

are some other games that you like to play? These magic sneakers will help you win your favorite games, too.

Wouldn’t you like to have a pair of sneakers like that? Sure, so would I. But we were just pretending, because there is no

such thing as magic sneakers.

But now wait a minute. There is Somebody who wants to help you win every battle that you ever face. Oh, I know that you

will probably never fight a battle with tanks and bombs and guns. I’m talking about the battles that you face every day. I’m

talking about the battles between right and wrong, good and bad. I’m talking about the battles that you must win in order to

do well in school, in order to be a good boy or a good girl at home, in order to please God in your life. You see, if you are

going to have a happy life, you are going to have to win a lot of battles. And God wants to go with you to help you win every

battle that you fight.

This morning I am going to tell you about someone who knew that if he took God with him, he could win any battle.

STORY: The Bible tells us that there was a battle between the army of Israel and the army of the Philistines. The Israelites

were the good guys and the Philistines were the bad guys. The battle took place on two great big hills that were right next to

each other. Over here on this hill were the Israelites. Over here on this hill were the Philistines. In between was a great big

valley. The two armies were not fighting, but instead they were each looking across the valley waiting for the other side to

start something.

Every day a giant from the army of the Philistines walked down into the valley to speak to the army of Israel. The giant’s

name was Goliath. Goliath was NINE FEET TALL! Do you know how tall that is? That’s taller than the ceiling in this room.

That’s so tall that Goliath would have hit his head on the net of a basketball hoop. Goliath was a big, ugly, smelly giant.

Every day Goliath would walk down into that valley and yell to the army of Israel: “HEY, UP THERE! YOU’RE ALL A

BUNCH OF SISSIES! WHY DON’T YOU SEND A MAN TO FIGHT ME! YOUR GOD IS A PHONY! SEND A MAN

TO FIGHT ME! YOUR NATION IS FOR WIMPS! YOU’RE ALL A BUNCH OF LOSERS! SEND A MAN TO FIGHT

ME!” Every day he would go into the valley and yell these things to the army of Israel. What did they do? They were too

scared of that giant to do anything. There was not a man with enough courage to go down into that valley and fight that nasty

giant.

One day a young boy named David came to the battle site up on the hillside where the Israelites were. He had come to deliver

lunches to his brothers, who were soldiers in the army of Israel. While David was in the camp talking to his brothers, that big

ugly giant Goliath started his yelling again. “HEY, UP THERE! YOU’RE ALL A BUNCH OF SISSIES! WHY DON’T

YOU SEND A MAN TO FIGHT ME! YOUR GOD IS A PHONY! SEND A MAN TO FIGHT ME! YOUR NATION IS

FOR WIMPS! YOU’RE ALL A BUNCH OF LOSERS! SEND A MAN TO FIGHT ME!” David could not believe what he

was hearing. He had never heard anyone speak evil of his God or his nation like that before. He said to his brothers, “Why

doesn’t somebody go down there and fight that punk?” His brothers told him to be quiet; but David kept on saying, “Somebody

ought to fight that wicked giant!”

Meanwhile, King Saul was sitting in his royal tent trying to figure out what to do. He didn’t know how he was going to beat

the Philistines and their giant. Then someone told him about a young man who was saying that he knew God could beat the

giant. Someone had heard David talking to his brothers, and they told King Saul about him. So Saul sent for David.

Saul did not have the courage or the faith to go down into that valley and fight the Philistine giant. So David said, “King Saul,

since no man will volunteer, I would like to volunteer to fight Goliath.”

Saul told David that he was too young and small to fight such a big man. But David said, “King Saul, one day while I was

taking care of my father’s sheep in the wilderness, a lion and a bear came a tried to kill some of the sheep. I killed them both

with my bear hands. And the same God that helped my kill that lion and that bear will help me defeat this loudmouthed giant.”

Saul was convinced that David was telling the truth. Saul said, “I will allow you to go down there and fight for us. But first

I want you to try on some of my armor.”

David said, “I cannot use your armor, because I have never practiced with it. It will not help me, it will only slow me down

and hurt me.

Saul brought out a big sword, a big helmet, and a big jacket made of steel. He wanted David to try and use them to go into

battle. Once again David insisted, “I have never used these, and if I try to use them now they will only slow me down.” What

were the weapons that David was used to using? His slingshot, a stone, and most importantly…his GOD! So Saul let David

go to fight the giant

David walked down into that valley and pulled his slingshot out of his pocket. He reached into a little creek and picked five

smooth stones out of the water. He walked up to the giant and said, “You have come to fight with a sword and a bunch of

armor; but I come to you in the name of the LORD God, the God of the army of Israel, whom you are fighting. And I will

win.” Then David reached in his pocket, pulled out a stone, put it in his slingshot, twirled it around and let it go…through the

air and right into the forehead of the giant. With just that one stone the giant Goliath fell to the ground dead. And the army

of Israel chased after the army of the Philistines and won a great victory.

Did David win that battle because he had such perfect aim? No. God certainly used David’s skill to get the job done. But

David beat Goliath because God was with him.

Kids, you can win any battle if you allow God to fight with you. Let me tell you some of the battles that you are going to

fight. You are going to fight the battle of peer pressure. Do you know what that means? That is when all of your friends are

doing wrong, and they try to get you to do wrong with them. Most teenagers who start using drugs do it because of peer

pressure. They don’t really want to try it, but the people around them are doing it, so they try it. (By the way, that’s why it is

so important to have the right kind of friends.) Most young people who start smoking cigarettes do it because of peer pressure.

Most young people who start drinking beer do it because of peer pressure. If you don’t win the battle of peer pressure, you

will not have a happy life! But if you have God fighting for you, you can win.

Another battle you will fight is the battle of laziness. You will be tempted to be lazy about doing your school work. You will

be tempted to be lazy about helping your mom and dad around the house. You will be tempted to be lazy about getting a job

when you are old enough to get one. You will be tempted to be lazy about keeping your room clean. But if you let laziness

control you, you will never get anything done. You will always fail, and not succeed. If you do not win the battle against

laziness, you will not have a happy life.

You will fight the battle of disobedience. You will get to the place where the devil will tell you that your parents don’t know

anything, your pastor doesn’t know anything, your Sunday School teacher doesn’t know anything. If you let him convince

you that you know more than your parents, your pastor, and the other authorities over you, you will want to disobey what they

say. Once you start doing that, you will be in a lot of trouble. If you do not win the battle against disobedience, you will

not have a happy life. Peer pressure, laziness, and disobedience are three giants that you will have to fight in your lifetime. You can defeat them if

you have God fighting for you!

David killed the wicked giant Goliath because God was fighting for him. And you can win any battle that you fight if you

have God fighting for you.

How do you get God to fight for you? First, you must know that you are saved, and you must be baptized after you get saved.

Then, you must be in church every Sunday. You must read your Bible and pray every day. And you must obey what God

tells you to do. Then God will be with you, and you will win your battles.

Let’s learn our memory verse: Psalm 1:5 – Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the

congregation of the righteous.

DAVID AND GOLIATH

I Samuel 17

Teen and Adult Lesson

Year One, Quarter Four, Lesson Three Sunday, October 15, 2017

Teacher, choose one of the following truths to expand upon in teaching this portion of Scripture to your

teen/adult class. Teach and apply the truth that you choose using statements and illustrations that are most

helpful and applicable to your students.

I. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO GOD’S WILL FOR YOUR LIFE YOU ARE GOING

TO HAVE TO FACE SOME GIANTS. David was on his way to the throne. He was

going to be the King of Israel. This encounter with Goliath was not an accident. This

was not David sticking is nose in someone else’s business. This was an encounter that

was planned by God. God has something for you to do in life that is just as important

and just as fulfilling as being King of Israel would be for David. If you are going to get

there, you are going to have to follow God’s path for you. If you follow God’s path for

you, it will inevitably lead you to face some giants; but they are giants that God will

defeat for you if you will simply live obediently

II. GOD WANTS TO USE YOU TO DO THINGS THAT NOBODY THINKS CAN BE

DONE. Every man from King Saul to the smallest soldier in the army refused to step

forward and say, “I can do it;” but David believed that God could give him the victory.

God wants to use you to do the impossible.

III. GOD KNOWS HOW TO PREPARE YOU TO FACE YOUR GIANTS. In the course

of duty, God used David to kill a lion and a bear. This was preparation, to help David

understand what it is to be used of God. To David, it must have seemed impossible to

kill a lion and a bear; it took just as much of God’s power to do that as it took to kill

Goliath. Once he had succeeded at killing the lion and the bear, he knew that his own

strength was not the key element; God’s power was the key element. God used two great

victories in the wilderness to prepare David for the most legendary victory of his life.

IV. YOU WILL ONLY BE VICTORIOUS IF YOU GO IN THE POWER OF THE LORD.

David didn’t beat Goliath just because he had good aim; he won because he declared that

he was fighting in the name of the Lord. David was not full of arrogance; he was full of

faith.

V. GOD WANTS TO USE THE SKILL THAT YOU HAVE. David was skilled with the

slingshot. God did not need someone skilled with a slingshot. God needed someone

who was willing to give to God whatever skills he had. David gave his skills to God,

and God blessed him for it. God will bless you if you will give Him what you have.
