Dear Beloved Members and Friends,

Happy Spring and Summer! Blessed Pentecost! The Day of Pentecost is celebrated on June 4, 2017. The season of Pentecost will be celebrated the remainder of spring, all summer and until November 26, 2017.

Pentecost Day was an important day in the lives of Jesus’ disciples. Christ’s disciples were gathered together on Pentecost Day. Pentecost was also called the Feast of Weeks, the Feast of Harvest and the Day of First-fruits. The disciples obeyed our Lord’s command to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the gift His Father promised. Jesus promised His disciples that they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

The sound like the blowing of a violent wind and tongues of fire resting on the disciples preceded the Holy Spirit’s arrival. Wind is a sign of the Spirit. A sound like the blowing of a mighty wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where the disciples were sitting. The disciples were teaching and learning God’s Word. The Holy Spirit comes and works when God’s Word is proclaimed. The Counselor comes and works in your life when you hear and read God’s Word.

Jesus baptized His disciples with the Holy Spirit and with fire on Pentecost. Christ baptized you with the Spirit when you received Holy Baptism. All of the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as He enabled them. The Spirit helped the disciples to speak in languages they had not previously learned. Jews of various languages and nationalities were gathered in Jerusalem for Pentecost. The disciples could speak Aramaic, Greek and Hebrew. The Counselor enabled the disciples to speak God’s Word in languages in addition to those three. The Comforter helped the disciples to speak God’s Word in fifteen or more other languages.

Page 2: Sunday, October 15, 2017 | East Lansing, MIMichigan District Web viewThe disciples were teaching and learning God’s Word. The Holy Spirit comes and works when God’s Word is proclaimed.

The Apostle Peter said in his Pentecost message, “repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are

far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call (Acts 2: 38, 39). You were filled with the Holy Spirit when you were baptized. You received the forgiveness of sins that Jesus won for you on the cross. You received the gift of the Spirit. Parents, your children received the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit when they were baptized.

The Holy Spirit has helped you since your Baptism. The Spirit has given you words to say to people when you spoke about God. The Comforter has comforted and encouraged you with His presence and Word. The Counselor has helped you to comfort and encourage others. The Holy Spirit has helped you to tell people that Jesus is Savior and Lord.

The Spirit has enabled you to bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The Spirit of truth has led you into truth in the Bible. The Counselor has helped you remember Jesus’ teachings. The Comforter daily forgives all your sins. The Holy Spirit has called you by the Gospel, enlightened you with His gifts, sanctified and kept you in the true faith. The Spirit enabled you to memorize and remember God’s Word. Praise and thank the Holy Spirit for blessing you!

The Holy Spirit helps you to speak the wonders of God to people. The Spirit encourages you to tell people that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus will be saved. The Counselor enables you to tell others that Jesus did miracles, wonders and signs during His public ministry. The Comforter encourages you to share with folks that wicked men put Christ to death by nailing Him to the cross. The Holy Spirit helps you to tell people that God raised Jesus from the dead. The Spirit leads you to share with folks that Christ ascended into heaven. The Counselor enables you to tell people that Christ received Him from the Father and poured Him out on Pentecost. The Comforter helps you to encourage people to repent and be baptized.

The Holy Spirit encourages you to call on the name of the Lord by receiving His Supper. Jesus will save you from your sins by forgiving them. Christ will give you joy, life, love, peace and salvation. Jesus will give you His body in the bread you will eat and His blood in the fruit of the vine you will drink. You will proclaim our Lord’s death until He comes again in glory. Give thanks to the Lord for all the blessings He gives you in His Supper.

May God bless you and your family this summer and always!

Sincerely Yours in Christ,Pastor Terry Nelson

We are planning this year’s VBS for JULY 24-28, 2017. Plan your summer commitments as able around VBS. This year’s theme is “Maker Fun Factory” – Created by God, Built for a Purpose. VBS is held for children going into kindergarten through going into sixth grade. A $15 materials fee is due at the time of registration. (If you help out VBS week, there is no registration fee for your child.)

Many helpers will be needed to provide this outreach. If you can lend a hand this summer, email or call the church office.

A REGISTRATION FORM and HELPER form are included at the end of this newsletter.

DONATIONS to the VBS Fund to cover expenses are greatly appreciated!2017 ALTAR FLOWERS - - Sign Up Needed

Sign up for those important dates in celebration of birthdays, anniversaries, etc. or in memory of loved ones. Vases are available for $30 each and may be taken home after worship. Two vases are available each Sunday. (You do not need to sign up for both.) Checks are made out to “Cross of Christ” – designated “Altar Flowers” and placed in the offering plate. Special envelopes are also provided near the sign-up chart. Sign up is especially needed for the summer months.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

THANK YOU to Ron Reichert for planting, weeding, and adding mulch to the front flower beds. They look beautiful. Thank you to our Trustees for their faithful grass cutting: Bill Hirth, Gary Albin, Charley Hall, Ron Reichert, and Brent Sterling!

HELP NEEDED

Help is needed on the Altar Guild and as an Usher. Teams of two serve every fourth month by changing the altar paraments as needed and cleaning the communion ware after the service. Our ushers serve every third week on a team of four. The more who participate, the less often they need to serve. If you can help out, email the office or speak with Pastor Nelson.

More help will also be needed in the coming year for grass cutting. If you’d like to try it out this summer, speak with one of our Trustees.WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP

Women’s Fellowship is meeting on the first Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be held on June 7th at 11 a.m. Lunch follows at a nearby restaurant. Upcoming outings include a garden walk and visit to the Lace Museum in Northville. Any questions, contact Patty Wadkins at (248-446-9016) [email protected] or Lynda Whitcher at (313-719-9601) [email protected].

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

The Steward’s Journey

As stewards, we are part of a lifetime journey of faith. The journey moves forward as our relationship with and our dependence on Christ grow. In our journey, God calls each of us to be faithful in our living, serving, witnessing, and giving. The steps we take are sometimes large, sometimes small, sometimes even backward.

To quote Ron Vallet, “Stewards are not simply born. We are created and molded as stewards by the Holy Spirit in a lifelong process that includes conversion to the shape of life we see in Jesus Christ and many experiences of losing and finding our way in the Lord.”

The Holy Spirit shapes, molds, and transforms us during a lifetime journey into stewards who faithfully live for Christ. Because of God’s goodness and grace we live our lives in thanksgiving and gratitude. In 2 Corinthians 5:15 we read, “And He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him Who for their sake died and was raised .” Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ Who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

As God’s people and stewards we are called and equipped by the Holy Spirit to live for Christ. We are to seek God’s will and purpose for our lives. The stewardship life is a life completely dedicated to God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Martin Luther said it this way: “If anyone would rap at the door of my heart and ask, ‘Who lives here?’ I would answer, ‘Martin Luther once lived here. But Martin Luther has moved out, and Jesus Christ has moved in.’”

Jesus uses the life that is now His to build His everlasting kingdom among men. In service to our Savior we can find our true place in life and fill it.

THE HOLY SPIRIT MAKES US MORE SENSITIVE TO SIN IN OUR LIVES.

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5).
