Listening Sessions Bishop Edward C. Malesic invites every member of the Diocese of Greens-burg to join him at any of the seven listening sessions where he will be pre-sent this fall. Bishop Malesic knows that the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report and the events of the past few months have evoked a great deal of pain, sadness, confusion and uncertainty for the faithful of the Diocese of Greens-burg.

These seven upcoming gatherings are extremely important, enabling Bish-op Malesic to be present to you, to listen to your concerns and to respond to your questions. These sessions will give you the opportunity to express your feelings, observations and suggestions. Please attend one of the sessions with Bishop Malesic and allow your input to help him guide our church as we go forward from this moment in our history as the People of God.

ERIC’S MUSIC NOTES

The first reading, the great “Shema, Israel” from Deuteronomy reminds us that God must be central in our lives. That we must love the Lord with all our heart, soul and strength. The Gospel passage repeats that point and adds the reminder that love of neighbor is intimately connected to love of God. We must love our neighbor as ourselves. We begin our celebration today with Praise to the Lord, a familiar and majestic hymn of praise, reminding us to “ponder anew what the almighty can do”. This is a hymn based on Joachim Neander's German hymn "Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren", published in 1680. John Julian in his “A Dictionary of Hymnology” calls the German original "a magnificent hymn of praise to God, perhaps the finest creation of its author, and of the first rank in its class." Our Preparation Hymn, We Are Called, echoes today’s Gospel call to love and service to our neighbor. Our Communion Hymn, This Bread That We Share, reminds us that we are called to love one another and to become the Presence of Christ to those around us. May our celebration of the Eucharist today lead us all to a greater love of God and neighbor. In a few weeks we will be beginning a new Liturgical Year, and with that our 2019 subscription to Breaking Bread Missalette will begin. At that time, you will notice that we have decreased the number of copies we have purchased for the year. Instead of the present three copies per pew rack, there will be two copies. This was done to decrease the cost to the parish, given the weekly Mass attendance numbers. The decreased number of copies will still be in excess of our usual weekly attendance, so there will still be a book for each person at Mass. The annual cost of the books is approximately $10.00 with shipping costs. Would you consider giving an EXTRA $10.00 donation this month to help defray this expense?

Eric

REST IN PEACE Lawrence “Patsy” Brunory father of Paula DeClaudio, parish secretary, who passed away peacefully at 100 years of age on 10/25. Please remember Patsy and his family in your prayers. Father Arnel Estrella died on October 27th at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Fr. Arnel was our Pastor for a short time before becoming ill and in that brief time made a most favorable impression on our parishioners. Well known for his brilliant smile and kind words, we were sad to see him leave us when he became ill. May choirs of angels bear him to paradise and present him to God most high. May he rest in eternal peace. Please keep Fr. Arnel’s mother and his family in your prayers. Pray for comfort for his brother priests from his home in the Philippines and from the Diocese of Greensburg and for his many friends in parishes both here and in his homeland.

SPECIAL COLLECTION-RETIRED RELIGIOUS AND RETIRED PRIESTS-NOVEMBER 3 & 4 Bishop Malesic asks that we join him in support of the upcoming appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious and Diocesan Priests and all of our brothers and sisters in Christ, present and past, who have dedicated their lives to prayer, ministry, and service. Today, the majority of women and men religious are past age 60; a significant number are past age 80. Many institutes simply do not have the resources to meet the dramatically escalating costs of care for their growing populations of elderly. Since 1999 we have included our retired diocesan priests in this appeal. The revenue generated through this collection allows the retirement fund for diocesan priests to provide periodically for an increase in the retirement benefit, without passing on the cost directly through an increase in the retirement premium. Twenty-five percent of the total of this year’s collection will be designated for the retired diocesan priests’ fund, and the remainder of the collection revenue will be passed on to the National Religious Retirement Office for distribution to the various religious communities applying for assistance.

LAST WEEKEND FOR THESE TWO DRIVES IS NOVEMBER 10 & 11 TOWEL COLLECTION TO SUPPORT THE HOMELESS The Holy Name Society, in response to a request from Fr. Tim Kruthraupt and the “Men of the Boulevard”, are asking for your support to the homeless by donating TOWELS—both bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths. There will be a collection bin at the back of the Church. Please help this collection which will end at the end of October. SOCK DRIVE FOR VETERANS The Knights of Columbus are asking for your support of the Veterans both in the local hospitals as well as those who are homeless by donating SOCKS and FLEECE ITEMS. The winter will soon be upon us and these items are in particular need. A collection bin will be in the back of the church for this collection. Thank you for your support REMEMBER THE VICTIMS OF THE SHOOTING IN PITTSBURGH Let us pray for the victims of the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, and for all affected by this tragedy, may God’s healing consolation be known by all in pain, and may God’s Spirit of peace fill our world. PANCAKE & SAUSAGE BREAKFAST Sunday, November 4, 8AM – 1 PM at St. John the Baptist Social Hall, Perryopolis. Adults $8.00, Children 3-10, $4.00 and children under 2 free. The menu is pancakes, sausage, hash brown and beverage. ETHNIC FESTIVAL Next Sunday, November 4, St. Sebastian Parish, Belle Vernon, will hold an Ethnic Festival in their Parish Hall from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 p.m. As a parish of many different ethnic backgrounds, there will be a variety of foods to taste and see and purchase. Takes out will be available. SISTERS OF CHARITY COUPON BOOK FUNDRAISER “Enjoy 2019” coupon books are available from the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill through Dec. 29 for $30.
