Lutherans Come to America
Come for a Second Spoonful!
Sunday Morning Jam Contemporary Christian Music
Mother’s Day - 9:30 to 10 am
Born and raised in Columbus, and having served in nearby
Lancaster from 1985-1999, I came to have a snoot-ful of
Rod Parsley, his World Harvest Church, and his program
Breakthrough, which is broadcast on our local “Christian”
television channel. I have a high school classmate who lives
near Parsley’s church, and he keeps me abreast of the latest
doings of the entrepreneur and his fundraising efforts.
The one above came with an Easter Sunday deadline. I
have no idea, and, frankly, I have no interest in knowing
how much money Parsley raised. I wonder if, had I sent
Parsley a donation, it would have been tax-deductible, as
are donations to Trinity Congregation. We have what’s
called a 501(c)3 status with the Internal Revenue Service,
status for a non-profit organization such as a church or a
charity. Our books are open for anyone to see how your
contributions are spent. Are Parsley’s?
Then, there’s Ernest Angley. I hadn’t heard his name in
ages until last month, when a court ordered him to pay
$388,000 in damages and back wages to a group of unpaid
employees who “volunteered” to work at his Cathedral
Buffet, an eating establishment owned by his church in
Northeastern Ohio. He had been cited for this same thing
back in 1999. The “volunteers” say they were coerced into
serving as waiters, bussers, and cashiers.
What troubles me is that the image of legitimate
Christianity is impugned by the deeds of entrepreneurs and
charlatans acting in the Name of Jesus. Their operations
feed the notion that the whole of Christianity is some kind
of money-making scheme. The concept of “the servant
Church” is lost when the stories broadcast and in print
focus on the shenanigans of so-called pastors and the poor
sheep misled by them.

“Mom and Me on Mother’s Day!”
All moms and their kids are invited to our annual Mother’s Day
celebration which will happen this year on May 14 during the
Sunday School hour. We’ll start with a light breakfast then
enjoy doing some “Mom and Me” activities together. And back
by popular demand will be the finger nail painting activity also.
So, all moms and their kids are encouraged to participate in this
special day of fun and fellowship for moms at our “MOM AND
ME MOTHER’S DAY” event!
“Sunday Morning Jam” Returns Mother’s Day
Everyone is invited, mothers included, to a second helping of “Sunday Morning Jam” on Sunday, May 14.
Church musician Adele Hoffman, with her father Karl Lehrer on bass violin and Patrick Green on guitar
and kids on beat box, will lead us in singing some contemporary Christian hymns and songs during the
Sunday School hour. There was a good turnout last month. Come and enjoy!
Blessing for New Drivers on May 14
Also happening on May 14th
will be a special blessing during our worship
service for two of our young people who have recently acquired their drivers
licenses. We have kind of fallen behind on this milestone in our young adults
lives, so this year we are getting back on track and honoring those who have
gotten their license in the past year.
Annual Memorial Day Weekend Observance
Sunday, May 28
On Sunday, May 28, we will have our annual Memorial
Day Weekend observance. At 9:15 am, we’ll gather
outside around the flag pole (in the sanctuary in the event
of rain) for a service to honor those who gave their lives in
service to our nation and give thanks for those who are
serving today. After the service, our Sunday school kids
will then participate in some patriotic games and activities
during the remainder of the Sunday school hour. This
will be our last day for Sunday School until fall, and so we
hope a lot of you will be there.
WEAR YOUR RED, WHITE, AND BLUE and take part
in this annual ceremony.
Youth and Family with SALLY WARNER, Trinity's Youth
and Family Ministries Coordinator
On Palm Sunday, children from our Sunday School and from Grace Lutheran Sunday School went to Genacross Sandusky Campus (Lutheran Memorial Home) to sing for the residents. We would like to thank ALL the kids and their parents who brought them to Genacross. The kids did an awesome job and the residents really loved it. THANK YOU ALL!
On Easter Sunday, our children got to enjoy the nice weather and go outside for a Easter egg hunt. They all collected a bag full of eggs and they all looked so cute in their Easter Sunday clothes!
We would like to thank Sally Hershey for all the time she spent taking pictures for us on Easter Sunday. Her backdrop and props worked out great and her willingness to do this is greatly appreciated. Also, we collected $35.00 from donations to give to Back to the Wild from those who got their pictures taken, and we thank you for that also.
On Friday, April 21st we held our annual overnight at the church. Unfortunately, not too many parents took advantage of a free night without their kids, and only 4 kids from our church showed up to enjoy all the activities we had planned for them. A BIG thank you goes out to Jill Conner for all her preparation for the overnight and Pat Wiedenheft for getting all the food. Both ladies spent the night with the kids and those who attended had a great time. It seems the overnight may be a thing of the past as interest in this event has dwindled down a lot in the past few years.

TRINITY CONGREGATION COUNCIL
Meeting Highlights - April 20, 2017 - 7:00 pm
Previous meeting minutes were approved with one slight correction. Treasures report was approved.
The positions of vice president and chairpersons for Stewardship and Finance and Global Mission are
still vacant.
Kathy Bango has started working on a personnel policy for the congregation. President Dave Miller will
get with her on this.
The Stewardship and Finance Ministry Team is working on the Mission Endowment Fund bylaws. They
will have a recommendation for Council a the June meeting.
“The Gathering,” a community-wide ecumenical event, will be July 22, more information to come later.
Barry Gill is once again our representative at planning sessions.
Wednesday Lenten meals were attended by an average of 30 people this year. The annual picnic will be
July 16 or 30. Congregational Life Chair Candy Beatty will look into having it at the park in Bayview this
year.
April 21 is the annual children’s overnight event. Theme is “Holiday Bash - Jesus Loves Us All Year”.
New door locks for the library are being worked on, so as to provide an isolated area for various purposes.
Our outdoor sign was temporarily repaired until Brady Sign can get out to look at it. The new parsonage
renters are Brian & Tina Leaders. They are in and getting settled. $1,567.87 was spent on fixing up the
parsonage before renting it. Plaster repairs have been made and the “cry room” can now be painted.
Meanwhile, Property Chair Mike Markley is looking into what it takes to fix the sanctuary plaster; it is
getting bad in several places. It was mentioned that the fan in the sanctuary’s “overflow” area makes noise
when it is in use.
A palm tree was purchased by Rosemarie Canter in memory of her husband, Warren. It was used on Palm
Sunday, and it will be kept in the columbarium chapel.
Cathy and David Wobser will accompany Pastor Gardner in attending the Northwestern Ohio Synod
assembly on May 19 and 20, in Bowling Green.
Next Council meeting is scheduled for May 18 at 7:00 pm.
The Community Mission team is scheduled to meet on May 9 at
6:00 pm. In May we will again be providing a lunch for the
families and staff at the Stein Hospice Center. The staff has
thanked us so many times for helping to comfort those families
that are going through a very difficult time. We will be planning
the upcoming “God’s Work Our Hands” project which is
scheduled for September 10th, hopefully we can have a great turn
out of helpers like we did last year. Details will be announced in
the coming months. - Barb Sessler, Chairperson
Put the FLAMe Giving Garden on your list of “Things to Do” this summer. We need folks to weed, water,
pick, and deliver. The tentative plant date is May 20th. The Garden is looking for organizations that will accept
food donations. Contact Barry Gill, (Trinity) at [email protected] to volunteer or with your
suggestions. Thanks to Roger Munsterman, (Zion, Huron) who once again arranged for Barnes Nursery to
donate 20 cubic yards of compost. Big thanks to Sharon Barnes.
Can you spare one hour, four times a year? The Genacross Board (Lutheran Memorial Home) needs
volunteers. FLAMe congregations should be represented. The commitment is minimal, just four lunch meetings
per year. Contact Craig Hecht (St. Paul) 419 366-5486 or Gabe Stoll, Executive Director at 419 625-4046.
Speaking of Genacross Lutheran Services, the Sandusky Campus (formerly Lutheran Memorial Home) 795
Bardshar Road, Sandusky, is holding a Hog Roast on Friday, May 26, from 3 to 6 pm. The cost is $10 per plate
including a beverage. All proceeds go to the Sandusky Campus Ladies’ Auxiliary. For more information and
pre-sale tickets, call Krista at 419 502-5706.
Calling all Lutherans! Let’s get out of our pews and take our message on the road. FLAMe will have booths at
the July 4th Stars and Stripes Celebration and at The Gathering. Both are being held in downtown Sandusky.
Volunteers are needed to man the booths. All we need are friendly faces. Contact Larry Riedy (St. Paul) at 419
656-1832 or [email protected] or Barry Gill, see above.
Dinner Church continues to meet the third Sunday of the month in Chet and Matt’s back room at 5 pm. Dinner
Church is an alternative worship service. The evening includes a meal, communion, singing, and praying. If you
have trouble making Sunday morning worship, give Dinner Church a try or suggest it to family and friends.
JOY Time meets on the second Thursday of each month to provide an evening of prayer, song, and fellowship
for adults with disabilities. The JOY Time Choir performed in Ability Works’ Talent Show on April 20. The
next regular meeting will be May 11 from 6 to 7:30 pm, at St. Paul’s, Sandusky.
A big thank-you from the Erie County Senior Center. Over $3,000 was collected through Pass-the-Plate Sunday
for Meals on Wheels.
