The genesis of the startling South
Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)
win by Russian Camelot (Camelot)
yesterday came more than two
years ago when connections of the northern
hemisphere-bred three-year-old were trumped
by another syndicate who were also attempting
to buy promising German horse Schabau
(Pastorius).
The disappointment of being beaten to the
punch by the fellow Australian partnership
for Schabau, who incidentally is undefeated
after three starts at Flemington last year, led to
Victorian trainer Danny O’Brien and UK agent
Jeremy Brummitt embarking on an ambitious
plan to source European yearlings to race
Down Under.
With the backing of principal owner
John Wheeler, O’Brien’s and Brummitt’s raid
on European yearlings has paid off almost Continued on page 2>>

immediately with Russian Camelot, a lightly-
raced colt, now one of the most promising
middle-distance horses in the country.
Born on March 29, 2017, and giving away
about six months in age to his Derby rivals,
Russian Camelot also became the first northern
hemisphere-bred three-year-old to win a
Classic in Australia.
“What he has done is extraordinary and it’s
a bit naive to think that you’re going to buy an
extraordinary horse every year. The age gap is
significant and it is naive to think that you could
overcome it with every yearling you send down
there,” Brummitt told ANZ Bloodstock News
last night.
| 2 |
“I think it’s an unusual circumstance
and it’s been very cleverly handled in that Danny didn’t really test that
maturity until close to the end of his three-year-old season.
“He’s going to kick over as a four-year-old in a couple of months and
he’s left it as late as possible to try and get him up in distance.
“It’s not that punishing to go for a mile and half if you’re in second
gear for a mile and a quarter.”
Brummitt bought Russian Camelot from Ireland’s Camas Park Stud
for 120,000gns (approximately AUD$240,000) from Book 1 of the 2018
Tattersalls October Yearling Sale on behalf of O’Brien’s clients who
harboured the desire to bring him to Australia unraced.
The agent takes up the Russian Camelot tale from there.
“Danny had asked me to go and find him a (tried) horse and for a year
I was looking and finally I found Schabau, but then we were outbid on
him. When we were outbid on Schabau, I convinced Danny to buy some
‘undamaged goods’ and so we bought two that year and we bought three
last year. I now hope that we might be at the sales this year, too.”
The down-to-earth Brummitt was not laying claim to being a genius
by any means when asked about how he identified Russian Camelot, who
was Lot 441 at the October sale.
“I try very hard to avoid the things that agents normally trot out about
a good horse, but I thought he was very athletic, very balanced and he
clearly had a lot of scope to improve and he came off a farm (run by) one
of the best horsemen in Ireland,”
he said.
Apart from the initial
selection process, one key
element Brummitt believes has
been crucial in the success of
Russian Camelot is the fact that
he was broken-in in Australia.
“I think that is an interesting
point. I thought it might make
more sense to break them in here
(in the UK) and use their residual
fitness from the sales, but Danny
was keen to get them down there as soon as possible and do the whole
process there and it’s obviously worked,” he said.
“He’s got three two-year-olds (from Europe) and they are all where
you would want them to be at this stage.
“They could be as slow as a tugboat or another Russian Camelot,
but the process has worked very well in terms of acclimatisation and
maturation of those horses, so I don’t think we’ll be changing the formula.”
The current two-year-olds in Victoria under O’Brien’s care are by
Australia (Galileo), Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) and another Camelot
(Montjeu).

Brummitt said: “I am very lucky to
work with such a supportive sponsor as Danny O’Brien and John Wheeler.
I appreciate working with two people who let me get on with the job.”
The agent also predicted that the best may be ahead for Russian
Camelot and did not rule out the colt becoming an elite contender over
shorter distances.
“I have no doubt that when he matures that he will be quick enough at
a mile against the opposition in Australia,” he said.
“Horses don’t get quicker with age; they get stronger and more mature.
Mentally, he’s too immature for them to chase him into the bridle and ask
him to run as fast as he can, but once he’s got more time under his belt and
he’s a more seasoned racer, I think Danny will be able to pull him back to
shorter distances and have him travel a bit closer in the run.
“I am not suggesting there’s anything inherently more valuable about
that, but a lot of people think they can only step up in distance as they get
older. You have to train the mind as well as the body and if you’ve got the
mind right they can often step back.”
‘Derby win very satisfying’Russian Camelot ($2.90 favourite) defeated Dalasan (Dalakhani)
($3.80) by one and three-quarter lengths with Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)
winner Warning (Declaration Of War) another length away in third.
"Obviously we're really excited. He's a horse that we've had a huge
opinion of," O'Brien said.
"We've had him since he was a yearling and this was a race that we've been
aiming him at for the better part of 12 months. He's turned up and delivered.
"It's very satisfying. It's never been done before - a northern
hemisphere horse has never won a Derby in Australia. I don't think one
has ever run?
"We were very confident going into today that there were no excuses.
He'd had everything we needed to do to get him right today."
Russian Camelot firmed dramatically in betting for this year’s
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) after the eye-catching performance, but
O’Brien was reluctant to commit to the inexperienced colt following the
same path as his older stablemate Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War)
who was victorious on the first Tuesday in November last year.
"He's obviously been a very
exciting horse, not just for us but
the public as well from the time he
had his first start," he said.
"We'll see about the Cup. He's
still a young horse. We'll enjoy
today. The owners are a great
group of people who have resisted
some big offers for the horse and
I'm sure they're all thrilled as we
are that he's won a Derby.
“And we'll savour that and
certainly we'd be looking forward
to the spring."
Russian Camelot was
scratched at the barriers in a Melbourne city race, forcing O’Brien to take
the colt to Pakenham where he scored a comprehensive seven-length win
before he again missed a key lead-up race due to a minor throat infection
and poor blood count.
Jockey John Allen undertook two weeks of isolation in Adelaide to
ensure he could ride Russian Camelot after regular jockey Damien Oliver
declined the offer due to the coronavirus restrictions.
"When I got offered this ride it became a bigger carrot to head to
Adelaide," Allen said.
"Danny filled me with confidence. He said ride this horse like the
best horse. He was confident if he was close enough on the corner that he
would have a better turn of foot.
"It proved that way. He was just the superior horse. Obviously he's an
exceptional horse. A lot has been made about his preparation but I think
the bigger factor is he’s still six months younger than all these horses.
"If he can beat them now and he's only just turned three, imagine
what he can do in six months or a year’s time."
Dalasan’s jockey, Jason Holder, said the winner was just too good for
the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained colt.
“We had a nice run in transit and presented to win, but the other horse
was too good,” Holder told Racing.com.
Damien Thornton, who was attempting to ride his second Group
1 winner in as many weeks after Toffee Tongue (Tavistock) landed the
Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m), said third-placed Warning was “honest”.
“I would have liked to get rolling earlier, but the best horse won,” the
Victorian jockey said.
Russian Camelot (3 c Camelot - Lady Babooshka by Cape Cross) has
raced five times for three wins and won $324,225 in prize-money.
By Camelot, who shuttled to Coolmore Australia in 2014 for one
season, he is one of two winners, the other being No Trouble (No Nay
Never), for the unraced mare Lady Babooshka. In turn, she is a three-
quarter sister to four-time stakes winner Alkaadhem (Green Desert) and a
half-sister to the stakes-placed Raising Sand (Oasis Dream).
Also featured in the pedigree is Royal Ascot Group 2 winner and US
Grade 2 winner Stagecraft (Sadler’s Wells) and European stakes winners
Mullins Bay (Machiavellian) and Hyabella (Shirley Heights).
Lady Babooshka also has an unraced two-year-old sister to Russian
Camelot, who is in training at Lambourn in the UK with Sylvester Kirk, a
filly foal by Zoffany (Dansili) and she is back in foal to Camelot.
Gear change switches on Ringbolt in SiresA crucial gear change and a step up in distance for Ringbolt (Dream
Ahead) has provided senior trainer Tony McEvoy with his fourth SA Sires’
Produce Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in the past eight years after the lightly-raced
gelding caused an upset.
McEvoy, who is now in partnership with son Calvin, trained the first two
over the line in the $120,000 Group 3 race but it was Ringbolt ($26) who was
able to run down his stablemate and leader, Violinist (Fastnet Rock).
Ringbolt, who ran fourth in a 1050-metre two-year-old maiden at
Balaklava on April 29 behind Riched (Rich Enuff), had blinkers fitted for the
Sires and he also appreciated the extra 350 metres.
He's obviously been a very
exciting horse, not just for us but the public as well from the time he had his first start- Danny O’Brien

Timeform rated 125 as a 3YO, higher than other Encosta de Lago line sprinters Zoustar (122), Northern Meteor (122), Rubick (122), Cosmic Force (118) etc.
As a 3YO he won The Everest in record time defeating 10 individual Gr.1 winners. As a 2YO he won the sire-making Todman Stakes-Gr.2, also in record time!
New for
2020
Ridden by John Allen, Ringbolt defeated
Violinist ($11) by one and a quarter lengths with Crown Mint (Hallowed
Crown) ($6.50) another half a length away third. The $2.35 favourite
Ecumenical (Zebedee) finished fifth.
Calvin McEvoy said Ringbolt had made significant improvement
since his first start.
"He was a bit of a drunken sailor at Balaklava and we elected to go with
the blinkers," he said.
"We only really gave him one bit of work in them and he just pinged out of
the gates today and was always on the bridle for Johnny. He was very strong.
"He's got a lot of upside. He's just going to get better and better when
he gets a little bit older and probably out to a mile."
Allen, who made the call to
base himself in Adelaide for the
carnival, was taken by the manner
of Ringbolt’s win.
"He looked like a horse that
was really going to improve from
the run and so it proved," Allen
said.
"He was a different horse
today. Blinkers on. He was a lot
sharper and knew his job a bit
better."
Bred by Seymour Bloodstock’s Darren Thomas and passed in with a
reserve of $40,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale,
Ringbolt (2 g Dream Ahead - Maxi Dress by Shamardal) has earned
$77,565 prize-money from his two runs to date.
He is one of three winners for European mare Maxi Dress, who was
bought by agent Johnny McKeever at the 2013 Tattersalls July Sale for
80,000gns, and is from the same family as fellow imported horse Foreteller
(Dansili), who won three times at Group 1 level in Australia for Chris
Waller earlier this decade.
Maxi Dress, who was purchased by Fig Tree Pastoral for just $5,000 in
the March (Late) Inglis Digital Sale, has a weanling brother to Ringbolt.
She did not get in foal to Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar) last year.
Ringbolt is one of seven Australian stakes winners for the former
Aquis Farm and Emirates Park shuttler Dream Ahead (Diktat).
Tambo’s Mate sures up Stradbroke start with BRC Sprint win
Tambo’s Mate (Mossman) was put to the test in the BRC Sprint (Gr
3, 1200m) at Doomben yesterday, with trainer Stuart Kendrick seeking
to ascertain whether the gelding was worthy of a shot at next month’s
Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m).
Kendrick had been tossing up whether to start Tambo's Mate yesterday
or wait for the Chief De Beers Handicap (Listed, 1000m) at the Sunshine
Coast next Friday, but the Caloundra-based trainer elected to run over
1200 metres, with the decision duly vindicated.
"We figured if he couldn't run well on Saturday he wouldn't be any
chance in the Stradbroke," Kendrick said.
"But he is in the Stradbroke field now and we know he can handle
Eagle Farm.
"The Stradbroke will be tougher but Tambo's Mate is tough so we can
have some fun."
Tambo's Mate ($12), who was ridden by Matthew McGillivray,
defeated Deep Image (Testa Rossa) ($14) by a short head.
The Tony Gollan-trained pair Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) ($3.80
equal favourite) and Vega One (Lope De Vega) ($6) ran third and fourth
respectively in a bunched finish.
The well-backed equal favourite Kementari (Lonhro) ($3.80) was fifth,
beaten a length a quarter, after being slowly away.
Kendrick said he would now
decide on a Stradbroke lead-up
race for Tambo’s Mate but the
Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at
Eagle Farm on May 23 was the
most likely target for the in-form
sprinter, whose first stakes win
came last November when he
again beat home Vega One and
Deep Image in the Tattersall’s
Recognition Stakes (Listed,
1350m) at Doomben.

A homebred for Townsville-based
bookmaker Dalan Tamblyn, Tambo’s Mate (4 g Mossman - Passagemaker
by Canny Lad) has defied early setbacks. He was to be offered for auction
at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, but he had
to be withdrawn after the discovery that he had a fractured sesamoid.
From 16 starts, he has won eight races with four placings for earnings of
$455,950 in prize-money.
A half-brother to two other
winners, Tambo’s Mate is one of
five named foals for the twice-
winning Passagemaker, herself a
daughter of Georgia Belle (Clear
Choice) who was successful at
Listed level in Sydney.
Tambo’s Mate has an unraced
two-year-old half-brother named
Gunnerside (Choisir) who
Tamblyn sold to the Newgate
Bloodstock-China Horse Club
partnership for $125,000 at last
year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
Passagemaker also has a weanling filly by Churchill (Galileo) and is in
foal to Epaulette (Commands).
Doomben Guineas winner Vanna Girl continues to bloom
Toby and Trent Edmonds will look to extend the campaign of
yesterday’s Doomben Guineas (Listed, 1615m) winner Vanna Girl
(Husson) and chase further “black-type” success despite the three-year-
old effectively still being in her first racing campaign.
The Gold Coast father-and-son training partners have earmarked The Roses
(Gr 2, 1800m) next month for Vanna Girl ($2.70 equal favourite), who ran down
Supergiant (Red Giant) ($21) to score by a neck in a thrilling battle over the final
200 metres. Ballistic Boy (Smart Missile) was a length away in third.
"She can head to the The Roses on June 13 which should be perfect for
her. We will have to find another lead-up which we can decide on shortly,"
Toby Edmonds said.
"Then we might talk about the spring. Don't forget she has been doing
this on a preparation where we have been forced to give her a week off and
bring her back and give her another week off, etc.
"She only cost $40,000 and that takes her to about $200,000 in earnings.”
Jockey Matthew McGillivray, who rode Vanna Girl to victory at the
Gold Coast on April 17, elected to undertake two weeks of quarantine and
move zones so he could maintain his association with the Listed winner.
"She's such a versatile filly, with gate one today we were able to ride her
right up on speed Matty gave her the trip we wanted, but under different
circumstances you could ride her back and run on as well," Edmonds said.
"She's still going great at home and as we saw today racing as good as
ever. At this stage we'll keep her in until she tells us she needs a break."
Purchased at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by Edmonds, Vanna
Girl (3 f Husson - Logan’s Choice by Redoute’s Choice) recorded her fifth
victory in the Doomben Guineas, her first at stakes level, from just eight
starts. She has now earned $203,100 prize-money.
A half-sister to her stakes-placed former stablemate Plucky Girl
(Pluck), Vanna Girl is one of five winners from as many foals to race for
three-time winner Logan’s Choice, who in turn is out of a half-sister to star
horse Naturalism (Palace Music) in De Souba (Dehere).
Logan’s Choice, who was a $250,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling
Sale purchase in 2007, has a yearling filly and a weanling colt by Vinery
Stud sire Star Turn (Star Witness).

Widden buys Sword Of Light for $900,000
Widden Stud yesterday bought Group 2 winner
Sword Of Light (New Approach) for $900,000
after the mare was passed in for $1 million at
Friday’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale. Sword Of Light,
who comes from one of owner-breeder David
Moodie’s prized families, was offered by his
Hesket Bloodstock on Friday in foal to Fastnet
Rock (Danehill). Also sold yesterday after being
passed in was Think Bleue (So You Think) for
$340,000 to Newgate Bloodstock and All Of Me
(Pierro) for $260,000 to Yu Long Investments.
The post-sales action saw Brett and Rachael
Howard’s Glenesk Thoroughbreds move into
pole position as the leading vendor of the
Chairman’s Sale; all 11 of their lots were sold
with an aggregate of $3.2 million.
Australian Broodmare Sale countdown todayThe Inglis Digital platform will face its biggest
test today when the Australian Broodmare
Sale is conducted online. Bidding began on
Friday for the sale, with 343 lots on offer today.
Mares in foal to the likes of top-class proven
sires such as Pierro, Zoustar, Dundeel, So You
Think, Brazen Beau, More Than Ready, Written
Tycoon, Lonhro, Street Boss, Rubick and Deep
Field headline a strong catalogue. The final
countdown will begin at 10am, with each lot to
sell sequentially in order.
Four for CamelotCamelot (Montjeu) scored his fourth individual
Group 1 winner overall and his first in Australia
after Russian Camelot (3 c ex Lady Babooshka
by Cape Cross) took the South Australian Derby
(Gr 1, 2500m) at Morphettville yesterday.
Russian Camelot joined Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m
4f) winner Latrobe, Belmont Oaks (Gr 1, 10f)
victor Athena and Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr
1, 2000m) conqueror Wonderment as a scorer
at the highest level for Camelot, winner of the
2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), English Derby (Gr 1,
1m 4f) and Irish Derby in 2012. Camelot stood
one season in Australia in 2014, but has not
shuttled since. He stands at Coolmore Stud in
Ireland at a fee of €40,000 (AUD$67,000).
101 for SnitzelOnly a couple of weeks after Snitzel (Redoute’s
Choice) brought up his 100th individual stakes
winner, he made it 101 yesterday when Snitz (5
g ex Tickle My by Perugino) won the Takeover
Target Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Randwick
yesterday. Snitz continued a strong run of form,
defeating Greyworm (Master Of Design) by a
half-length with Redouble (Redoute’s Choice)
a nose away in third. Sent to the 2016 Inglis
Vobis Gold Yearling Sale by Basinghall Farm,
Snitz was purchased for $75,000. His dam,
Group 2 winner Tickle My (Perugino), was
retired by breeder Ken Breese in November
after producing a colt by Alpine Eagle (High
Chaparral). Snitzel will stand for $165,000 (inc
GST) at Arrowfield Stud in 2020.
Snitz continues strong recent formTrainer Matt Dunn is weighing up whether to
push towards the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr
1, 1400m) with Snitz after he continued his
strong recent run with a win in yesterday’s
Takeover Target Stakes. Entries for the
Stradbroke were taken during the week with
Snitz not among the first nominations. "I
didn't put him in the Stradbroke because I
didn't think he was good enough for it and
didn't want it as an option to tempt me,"
Dunn said. "I was actually thinking he is
more a Ramornie horse. That is still an option
depending on if they smash him (in the
handicaps) for that win. I never thought he
could go to this level, so he is making it tough
for me. He has won a bit of money now, so
paying the late entry for the Stradbroke is an
option for the owners, but you would want to
see Brisbane open up a bit if we were to go
up there."
Nine for Ocean ParkAnother Dollar (5 m ex Make A Wish by Pins)
became Ocean Park’s (Thorn Park) ninth
individual stakes winner yesterday when she
took the Gosford Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) at
Randwick. Another Dollar sprinted strongly
to defeat long-time leader, German import
Ilwendo (Lando), by a head with a length
and three quarters back to Best Of Days
(Azamour) in third. Purchased by trainer
Chris Waller from the 2016 Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale out of Waikato Stud’s
draft for $190,000, Another Dollar had been
Group 1-placed but she had not broken
through in stakes company before yesterday.
Waikato Stud’s Ocean Park will stand for
NZ$20,000 (plus GST) in 2020.

Another Dollar bound for Magic Millions National Broodmare SaleAfter being withdrawn from last year’s Magic
Millions National Broodmare Sale, Another
Dollar will head through the sales ring this year
with her value increased by her first black-type
win in yesterday’s Gosford Gold Cup. "She is in
the mares' sale coming up at the Magic Millions
soon so she might be someone else's after that
but her price tag might be a bit better for the
owners," Waller said. "She has been a pretty
handy horse. She ran second in a Queensland
Oaks, then she just struggled on wet tracks but
she's finding some form. With the sale being a
bit later this year she will probably have another
run or two providing the tracks stay good."
16 for HussonHusson (Hussonet) yesterday registered his 16th
individual stakes winner when Vanna Girl (3 f ex
Logan’s Choice by Redoute’s Choice) took the
Doomben Guineas (Listed, 1615m). Husson will
stand at Aquis’ Queensland farm at Canungra this
season at a fee of $5,500 (inc GST)
28 for Dream Ahead
Dream Ahead (Diktat) produced his 28th
individual stakes winner, his seventh in
Australia, when Ringbolt (2 g ex Maxi Dress by
Shamardal) caused an upset in the SA Sires’
Produce Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). Dream Ahead
served seven seasons in Australia at Emirates
Park Stud and Aquis Farm, but did not return
from Haras de Grandcamp in France last year.
He stood at €12,000 ($20,000) this season.
157 for Fastnet RockFastnet Rock (Danehill) recorded an incredible
157th individual stakes winner yesterday when
Game Keeper (3 g ex My Tusker by Volksraad)
took the Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1600m) at
Morphettville yesterday. Game Keeper came
from second last to win comfortably, defeating
Hypercane (Toronado) by three lengths with
Quantum Mechanic (Deep Field) a long neck
away in third. Purchased by McEvoy Mitchell
Racing from the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale for $175,000, Game Keeper has
started to live up to his potential this preparation
with three wins on the trot. Fastnet Rock will stand
for $165,000 (inc GST) at Coolmore Stud this year.
Adelaide Guineasgoes to Game KeeperJockey John Allen has now won the last three
Adelaide Guineas after his success on Game
Keeper yesterday, adding to his victories
aboard Peaceful State (Animal Kingdom) and
So We Are (So You Think) the last two years. "It
definitely has been good to me and I got on the
right horse again this year," Allen said. "It was a
good win. He's obviously turned the corner. His
last couple of runs have been good wins and
just watching the replays in his last win he was
really strong through the line. He travelled well
in the run but when I pulled him out he really
did pick up for me and accelerate." Co-trainer
Tony McEvoy indicated that the three-year-old
could tackle the older horses in Saturday’s R A
Lee Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m).
Three straight forMasked CrusaderMasked Crusader (Toronado) may back up
in next week’s Inglis Guineas (RL, 1400m)
at Rosehill after stamping himself as one of
Australia’s most promising three-year-olds
with an effortless win yesterday. Ridden by
Tommy Berry, Masked Crusader strode out
on the speed, increasing his margin to three
lengths at the line. “He's a lovely horse. Tommy
really probably doesn't know how good he is,"
co-trainer Michael Hawkes said. "I don't know
where the top or the bottom is with this bloke
yet and I think Tommy is probably going to have
the same opinion. But you can only win and
he's won well. He is probably a lot better than
winter grade. We will see how he pulls up and
he might back up in the Guineas yet."

‘Sliding doors moment’ for CrusaderProlific breeder Rick Jamieson, who bred
Masked Crusader (Toronado) under his Gilgai
Farm banner and who retains a share in the
three-year-old, revealed on Twitter yesterday
just how close the promising gelding came to
being involved in a fatal accident last night.
Masked Crusader won at Bendigo last month,
but Jamieson said that he was also entered at
Canterbury and - if he was to run in Sydney -
he would have been transported north on the
Monday night before. That horse truck crashed
near Euroa, killing Atotori (Haradasun), dam
of Group 2 winner Zoutori (Zoustar), as well as
Shadwell fillies Aladaala (Redoute’s Choice),
Hafaawa (Redoute’s Choice) and Maktabba
(Per Incanto).
‘Peltzer a spring horse’Trainer Gerald Ryan believes that, unlike his
sire, Peltzer (So You Think) is set to find his best
as a sprinter-miler after his win over 1200 metres
at Randwick yesterday. Purchased by Ryan and
prolific commentator turned bloodstock agent
David Raphael for $260,000 from the Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, the handler
feels he is built to sprint, not stay. "As a type, I
always thought he was a 1400-metre horse,"
Ryan said. "He is not a So You Think 2000-metre
horse, he is a fast So You Think." While Peltzer is
entered for the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m), Ryan is
preferring to spell him with a Golden Rose (Gr
1, 1400m) campaign on the agenda. "I'm not
sure about Brisbane," Ryan said. "I do think he
is worth setting for a race like the Golden Rose
and if you do go to Brisbane then you have to
get them back into work by mid-June."
Consolation for Bottega at RandwickA proactive move from Nash Rawiller resulted
in a winning mount yesterday after he scored
aboard Bottega (Snitzel) yesterday. The
Gerald Ryan-trained Bottega had finished
second in both the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr
3, 1600m) and the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3,
2000m) before his win back in Benchmark 78
grade over 1800 metres yesterday. However,
the three-year-old had no rider booked, so
Rawiller instructed his manager Liam Prior to
chase the ride. "I noticed before eight o'clock
he still didn't have a rider and told Liam to
get straight on it, thankfully they gave me the
opportunity," Rawiller said. "He is a lovely
horse and probably the sort of horse now who,
with a win under his belt, can take it to the
next level and really come back a nice horse
in the spring." Ryan said that Bottega will
either head to the Lord Mayor’s Cup (Listed,
2000m) or will spell ahead of the spring.
Rough race results in Soldier Of Love winA dramatic stretch run in which favourite
Subpoenaed (Rip Van Winkle) was held up
and the Bjorn Baker-trained Miss Einstein
(Dundeel) was squeezed out saw Baker’s
Soldier Of Love (Mawingo) capitalise for his
first Saturday-class win yesterday. "I didn't
know whether to laugh or cry," Baker said. "I
was trying to watch it all and I still haven't quite
taken it in, but it worked out really well.” Baker
took Soldier Of Love to Bathurst for his debut
in August, 2018, and after his midfield finish,
he was prepared to sack him from his yard. “I
took him to Bathurst for his first run and I think
he ran a battling seventh. I said, 'I don't think I
can continue with him' but they were keen to
give him another prep and he's just continued
to improve," Baker said."He has never stopped
improving and until they do, you never quite
know where you're going to get to.”
Tejori justifies favouritismCanberra trainer Nick Olive admitted that he
was filled with nerves ahead of yesterday’s
Highway Handicap (1200m) at Randwick,
but Tejori (Hinchinbrook) lived up to his
expectations by producing a strong win. "We've
got an opinion of her. I was bloody nervous
coming here today, you're stepping up in class
and you want to see them do it," Olive said.
"Kerrin (McEvoy) gave her a beautiful ride, she
had all the favours. But look, she was there to
be beat, a few of them loomed and she held
them all off which was fantastic. I know it's only
a Highway, but you're stepping up in grade,
you don't want them to disappoint you. If the
bubble bursts now you're back to square one.
She is a lovely filly. I think she has got a nice
future."
Blazing Miss fires up for victoryThe speedy Blazing Miss (Sizzling) was a drifter on
course at Randwick yesterday, but she was much
more switched on as she built on her second-
up record in style. The Mark Newnham-trained
Blazing Miss, who had form around the likes of
Cosmic Force (Deep Field), Tenley (Medaglia
d’Oro) and Exceedance (Exceed And Excel) as a
juvenile, has now won three from four second-up
and the handler will now look to step her up in
grade. "It was really good to see her do that today.
She has run up to her work," Newnham said.
"She has always had a good second-up record. I
told Robbie (Dolan) to be a bit aggressive on her
today. She was a bit sleepy at Canterbury first-up
and got into an awful spot but today, once she got
outside the leader, I knew she'd be hard to beat. If
there is a little Listed race somewhere for her to try
to enhance her value then we'll do that.”
So Si Bon goes back-to-back
Throughout his career, So Si Bon (So You Think)
has proven frustrating more often than not, but
after 50 starts, he looks to be finally putting it all
together, scoring back-to-back wins for the first
time in his career. Having become the highest
earner of his sire So You Think (High Chaparral)
after his win in the Vobis Gold Mile (1600m)
last time out, the six-year-old stepped back to
open handicap company yesterday and never
looked in doubt, scoring by a widening three
and a quarter lengths. “Since being gelded he's
become one of our most consistent horses,"
co-trainer Ben Hayes said. "He's been fantastic
for the owners. They've been incredibly patient
with him and it's just been a matter of putting it
all together. He doesn't mind the wet tracks so
he'll stay in work and we'll try and go for three,
four, five in a row.”

Aidensfield gives Lindsay Park the half-centuryThe Lindsay Park operation of David and Ben
Hayes and Tom Dabernig notched its 50th
metropolitan winner for the season at Caulfield
yesterday after two-year-old Aidensfield
(Dissident) won on debut. Sporting the brown
and white colours of the Henderson family,
most famously carried at the track by Caulfield
Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Descarado (High
Chaparral), Aidensfield scored by a length
and a quarter over the appropriately-named
Out Of Isolation (Squamosa). “She's always
shown ability but we haven't been able to get
at her," Ben Hayes said. "She's just been a bit
immature in her shins, She's been in and out a
couple of times but we've managed to get her
to the races today. Her build up to the race was
excellent. It was great to see her do it today and
on soft ground but she'll be better on top of the
ground."
Oasis Girl races to easy Caulfield victoryThe mile and a wet track proved crucial to Oasis
Girl (Redoute’s Choice) scoring an emphatic
win at Caulfield yesterday. The Mathew Ellerton
and Simon Zahra-trained Oasis Girl raced clear
for a six-length win under Jamie Kah over
longshot Lord Jaysea (Playing God), vindicating
a stable decision to stay in Melbourne rather
than travelling to Adelaide for the Adelaide
Guineas (Listed, 1600m). "The other day we
just thought we chose the wrong race," Zahra
said. "She indicates that she just grinds away a
bit over the 1400 metres and she really relished
the conditions today and she's shown in the last
month that stepping her up in distance isn't an
issue. In her early days she used to pull in her
work and we thought she was a bit of a sprinter,
but she's come of age, she relaxes and she's got
a nice cruising speed and turn of foot."
Meaningful victory part of German doubleApprentice Lewis German scored a brace at
Caulfield yesterday, including taking the race
named for his mentor Darren Gauci aboard
the Louise Bonella-trained Barbie’s Fox
(Foxwedge). "Darren Gauci has helped me a
lot," German said. "He was a great rider, one
of the best, and everything he achieved makes
him so respected." Bonella hopes that Barbie’s
Fox may be able to return to stakes company
this preparation. "We were hoping with those
big races," Bonella said. "We gave them a crack,
but her last run in the Thousand Guineas she
had just gone over the top so we gave her a
spell and she's come back terrific. In a couple
of weeks there is a 1400-metre three-year-old
fillies race, so we'll keep going down that line
at present."
News Girl Lewis German’s second win came aboard the
Geoff Duryea-prepared News Girl (Magnus),
who scored by three-quarters of a length over
Coruscate (Exceed And Excel). German recently
transferred his indentures to Enver Jusufovic
at Cranbourne and looks to be reaping the
rewards as he makes connections with different
stables. "It's been a very good day and I'm
very grateful for the opportunities," German
said. "I've just transferred to Cranbourne for
three months to open up other opportunities
to build relationships with other trainers."
News Girl was shipped across the NSW border
from Duryea’s Corowa base, with the trainer
admitting he considered scratching when the
track was downgraded to heavy. "We avoided
the Cup meeting at Wagga because it was really
heavy there, but Lewis was confident that if
he could get to the right lane where the track
wasn't as bad then we'd have a go," Duryea said.
Gotta Kiss confirms winter potentialHighly-touted filly Gotta Kiss (Not A Single
Doubt) was a muck lather pre-race at Doomben
yesterday, but she justified favouritism to take
victory and stamp herself as a legitimate winter
carnival contender. Gotta Kiss had finished
third two weeks ago to the unbeaten Isotope
(Deep Field) at the Sunshine Coast and trainer
Steve O’Dea was confident she would take
improvement for that first-up effort. "We have
always said she would be better with a sit and
in her trial and two runs this time is how we
have ridden her," O'Dea said, also confirming
that a rematch with Isotope in the Champagne
Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) in a fortnight is her next
likely target.
Returning Byrne a winnerFive-time Brisbane champion jockey Jim Byrne got
straight back into the groove at Doomben yesterday,
riding a winner at his first ride back from injury.
Byrne had only ridden for one week in March
since suffering a broken leg in a fall at Doomben
on December 18. However, he was straight back
into the winners’ circle aboard Tony Gollan’s mare
Hollaback Girl (Your Song) yesterday. "She had
a big weight and a tricky barrier but Jim rode her
perfectly," Gollan said. "Hollaback Girl probably
hasn't lived up to her early promise but the thing
now is to win more black-type races with her."
Dissolution breaks drought at DoombenAfter two years in the wilderness, the Group
3-placed Dissolution (Snitzel) returned to the
winners’ circle at Doomben yesterday with a
win in a four-way photo over 2020 metres. It was
his first win since March, 2018, when he won a
three-year-old Benchmark 76 over Queensland
Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Sambro (Fastnet
Rock) at Warwick Farm. When his form dropped
away, he was sent to trainer David Vandyke on
the Sunshine Coast, who described the horse
as a “thinker”. “But today Jake (Bayliss) gave
him a good ride and he responded," he said.
"Dissolution has some strong breeding being
by top sire Snitzel and there should be more
races for him in Queensland."
Papa Jo scores all-the-way winPapa Jo (Drumbeats) again showed his liking for
barrier one with an all-the-way win at Doomben.
Papa Jo has now won seven races and five have
been from barrier one. He again drew the coveted
inside barrier and despite dipping at the start was
too slick in the TAB Handicap (1050m). Lindsay
Hatch trains at Toowoomba and once racing
was cut into zones he originally could only run
horses in the southern metropolitan zone based
around the Gold Coast and not in Brisbane.
Racing Queensland modified the rules so all
trainers could run their horses in Brisbane and
Gold Coast metropolitan races as of this week.
"He is very quick out of the barriers and he does
like the number one marble," Hatch said. "Papa Jo
is getting up in the ratings and we will have to look
for something around the same trip."

McDonald happywith KinaneFrank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Kinane
(Reliable Man) warmed up for his Queensland
campaign with a pleasing trial at Rosehill on
Friday. “He was really good,” said jockey James
McDonald, who rode him into fourth behind
Pinvincible (Pins) over 1030 metres. “He has
had a good blow but he is very well within
himself and I was rapt with the way he pulled
up.” Kinane is being aimed at the Gunsynd
Classic (Gr 3, 1800m) and the Rough Habit Plate
(Gr 3, 2200m), according to former trainer Mick
Kent’s racing manager Neale Donnelley, who is
also a part-owner. He also explained the origin
of his name: “Mick said when he was training in
Singapore the most reliable man he ever had to
put in the saddle was Mick Kinane from Ireland,
so given he is by Reliable Man, that’s how we
named him.
NEW ZEALAND
Hannam happy to be back in the saddleEffervescent jockey Robbie Hannam is eager to
get back to work, with the 53-year-old returning
to riding trackwork over the past two weeks
since New Zealand’s month-long Covid-19
lockdown concluded. “The body has been
good,” the Group 1-winning rider said. “I live
beside the river and there are walkways and
I have kept pretty active. We’ve been back at
trackwork just under two weeks and I have been
riding a bit of work for Peter Didham, who is my
brother-in-law. He’s got a few in work. I know it
was four or five weeks of not doing a lot, but it
was just like riding a bike. It felt so good to be
back on a horse.” He added: “I don’t get paid for
riding trackwork. I ride trackwork to get raceday
rides. The jump-outs and trials will bring the
horses forward a lot.”

Seven for KizunaJapanese Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Kizuna
(Deep Impact) produced his seventh individual
stakes winner yesterday when Deep Bond (3 c
ex Zephyranthes by King Halo) took the Kyoto
Shimbun Hai (Gr 2, 2200m) yesterday. Kizuna
won the same race in 2013 before taking the
Tokyo Yushun three weeks later. Swooping in
from just fore of midfield, the Ryuji Okubo-
trained Deep Bond defeated Man Of Spirit
(Rulership) by a neck with a length and a half to
Falconia (Deep Impact) in third; long odds-on
favourite Admire Virgo (Deep Impact) finished
fourth, just over two lengths from the winner.
Kizuna stands at Shadai Stallion Station on the
island of Hokkaido.
Eight for OrfevreJapanese Triple Crown winner Orfevre (Stay
Gold) made it eight individual stakes winners
yesterday when Bitterender (3 c ex Bitter
Sweet by Afleet Alex) took the Principal Stakes
(Listed, 2000m) at Tokyo. Sent off as second
favourite for trainer Ikuo Aizawa, Bitterender
sat handy before sweeping to the lead on
straightening, holding off the late surge of
Potager (Deep Impact) to win by a neck. They
came clear of outsider Dear Theory (Samurai
Heart), who finished third, three lengths from
the winner. Orfevre stands at Shadai Stallion
Station.
14 for RulershipRulership (King Kamehameha) scored a
14th individual stakes winner when Uranus
Charm (5 m ex Amethyst Ring by Fuji Kiseki)
took the Metropolitan Stakes (Listed, 2400m)
at Tokyo yesterday. The Makoto Saito-trained
Uranus Charm led at soft sectionals under
Norihiro Yokoyama, particularly through the
middle stages, and that proved crucial at the
end when she held off Valerio (Stay Gold)
and Taisei Trail (Heart’s Cry) to win by a
half-length. Rulership, the Hong Kong QEII
Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner, stands at Shadai
Stallion Station.
Japan’s best three-year-old milers to clashToday’s feature from Japan is the NHK Mile
Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) for the three-year-olds.
The NHK Mile Cup often plays second fiddle
to the Satsuki Sho (Gr 1, 2000m), the Japanese
2,000 Guineas, but it still has a notable honour
roll in its own right, with winners including
El Condor Pasa (Kingmambo), Kurofune
(French Deputy), King Kamehameha
(Kingmambo), Mikki Isle (Deep Impact) and
Admire Mars (Daiwa Major). Likely favourite
is the Grade 1-placed Taisei Vision (Turtle
Bowl), who broke the Tokyo track record over
1400 metres as a two-year-old and returned a
big winner in the Arlington Cup (Gr 3, 1600m)
at Hanshin last start, but top filly Resistencia
(Daiwa Major), winner of the Hanshin
Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 1600m), is sure to have
her admirers too.
Niigata Daishoten to unveil next Caulfield Cup winner? The Niigata Daishoten (Gr 3, 2000m) may not
be a race that immediately springs to mind as
a Caulfield Cup lead-up, but it was the race last
year that gave Mer De Glace (Rulership) his first
stakes win and set him on a path to Melbourne.
Ridden by Damian Lane, Mer De Glace won
by three-quarters of a length, defeating Mikki
Swallow (Tosen Homareboshi), who was
placed in the Tenno Sho (Spring) (Gr 1, 3200m)
last weekend. Today’s field features a number
of promising horses, including Listed winner
Red Galant (Lord Kanaloa), Grade 1-placed
Gibeon (Deep Impact) and Bravas (King
Kamehameha), whose dam Verxina (Deep
Impact) was a two-time winner of the Victoria
Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

Frosted has first American runnersDarley’s Frosted (Tapit) was represented
by his first starter on Friday when the Todd
Pletcher-trained Restored Order ran third in
a maiden special weight over four and a half
furlongs on the Gulfstream Park dirt. Restored
Order loomed up but raced greenly over the
concluding stages and he shapes as a horse
to follow going forward. Scratched from that
Gulfstream maiden was the Wesley Ward-
trained Breakthrough (Nyquist), who was set
to be the first runner for his Kentucky Derby-
winning sire; he is slated to run this morning,
Australian time. Three-time Grade 1 winner
Frosted will have his first Australian two-year-

French racing gets green light after political manoeuvers French racing will resume as planned tomorrow
at three tracks, including Longcahmp, but only
after a tense 24 hours of negotiation to avert
a potentially heartbreaking change of tack
from the government. France Galop president
Edouard de Rothschild announced in the early
hours of Saturday morning that the green light
had been given by President Emmanuel Macron
for a resumption which, for most of Friday, had
looked to be slipping out of reach. Some French
media reports suggest that certain key figures
connected with professional football – which
like all team sports is banned until September
under the administration's gradual scheme
to reinstate parts of the French economy and
society – may have lobbied Macron and his
government to have a second look at racing,
which is under different oversight to the vast
majority of sport. However, while Macron
reportedly vetoed the resumption of racing
on Thursday, Rothschild emerged the winner
in Friday’s negotiations. Longchamp features
a Group 2 and three Group 3 races upon its
return tomorrow.
Oppenheimers step in to save South African racingPhumelela Gaming, which operates the
majority of tracks in South Africa, has been
handed a lifeline after securing a deal with
Mary Slack, daughter of late mining magnate
Harry Oppenheimer and a prominent owner-
breeder in her own right. The group warned on
Monday it was facing bankruptcy as it emerged
the sport's shutdown in South Africa could
extend for a further four weeks. Phumelela
Gaming released interim results this week that
referenced a "dire situation" for racing in the
country. It filed for business rescue on Friday
afternoon but agreed a post-commencement
finance deal with a company run by Slack
and her daughters, who have injected vital
funds. South Africa went into the fourth stage
of lockdown last week – at which point it was
believed racing would be permitted to continue
– but the National Horseracing Association
(NHA) expects the government's green light
will only come in the next stage of the country's
coronavirus response and has had to once
again reschedule major races, including the
South African Derby.
Holland heading for CanadaGlobetrotting rider Darryll Holland is set to write
the next chapter of his truly international career
when travelling to Canada in the coming weeks
to begin a season-long stint at Woodbine. The
versatile rider was among Britain's top jockeys
for over a decade, riding more than a century of
winners in six out of eight seasons around the
turn of the century. Having plied his trade most
recently in South Korea, Mauritius, Japan and
the United States, the rider, whose top subject in
school was geography, is now planning to add
Canada to the list of countries in which he has
visited the winner's enclosure. The first European
jockey to ride in Korea boasts an impressive CV,
which includes around 30 Group 1 winners. He
is best known in Australia for finishing third on
Jardines Lookout (Fourstars Allstar) in the 2003
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) behind Makybe
Diva (Desert King).

employee categories, including, but not limited
to:
• Employees who were employed by you as employees as at March 1, 2020;
• Employees currently employed by you (including those stood down or re-hired);
• Employees who are full-time, part-time, or long-term casuals (to get the payment for
a casual employee, they must have been employed by you on a regular basis for longer
than 12 months as at March 1, 2020); and• Employees who are not in receipt of a
JobKeeper Payment from another employer.
• Special eligibility for horse business structures with no employeesPresuming the above eligibility conditions for employers and
employees are satisfied, note below how a “nominated” employee for the
following common business structures are eligible to receive JobKeeper.
• Sole traders
The proprietor will be eligible if they do not receive JobKeeper from
another source.Another reminder: for verification purposes, businesses without
employees, such as a sole trader:• will need to provide an ABN for their business;
• nominate an individual to receive the payment;
• provide that individual’s Tax File Number; and
• provide a declaration as to the recent business activity of that business.
Sole traders are easily the most common horse structures and, as
such, it is worth sharing that if you are also employed on a wage and
would like to receive JobKeeper as a sole trader, rather than through your
employer, you can nominate yourself as the “eligible business participant”

under the business participation rules and give appropriate notice to the
ATO. In this scenario, your employer cannot nominate you for JobKeeper
payments.

partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.• Trusts
A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive
JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving

• CompaniesA single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.
These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other
eligible employees. This single director must not be receiving JobKeeper from another
source.
These initiatives are a step forward, but
it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA
Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring
equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,
partnership, and company structures. They will
recommend to government that the ‘business

engaged persons in trusts, partnerships and

Of all the recent government Covid-19 initiatives recently announced, it is generally thought that the JobKeeper payment for employers is only available to profitable horse businesses that have established employees. If you thought this was the case, read on, upon review of the recently announced JobKeeper legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.Below, I will work through the four common business structures and explain how it is possible for business owners that operate as sole traders or through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business
JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight) the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed by them during this Covid-19 period. The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the
first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper can be received up to September 27, 2020.• Eligible employers
All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees. Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to
receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).
Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial consideration for employers and is noted below.
How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST
turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if it is easier.
If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount, you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements. More information will be provided soon. The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can
establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative tests.

“The interest has been very good,
and probably better than we thought, and by design we held back on
announcing fees just because we needed to see where the market sat, see
what the appetite was and just get a feel for what the market is saying,” Cox
told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“We think we have got a relative idea on where it all sits, but those
three in particular have demanded a lot of interest at this early stage.”
While conscious of the prevailing market outlook caused by the global
pandemic, Cox said the deeds of Exceed And Excel demanded that the
rising 20-year-old’s service fee was put up from $88,000 in 2019 given his
recent achievements.
Buyers have also recognised Exceed And Excel’s consistent
performance as an elite sire, with a colt making $1.7 million at the Easter
sale last year and another son at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale fetching $1.8 million, the second highest-priced yearling
sold at auction in Australasia this year.
“He has got three Group 1-winning colts at the moment and two
recently retired, Microphone and Exceedance and for Bivouac, it is our
intention to race him on next season,” he said.
“Having said that, those horses are winning the proper races - the
right races - and it shows with what the horse is doing in the sale ring as
well. Exceed is a horse who can change your postcode, whether you are
racing one or if you have got one in the sale ring.
“When a horse has that sort of effect generally you expect that to be
reflected in his price and that is where we’ve moved him to.”
Darley has maintained the 2019 service fees of Victorian-based
stallions Street Boss (Street Cry) ($27,500) and Brazen Beau (I Am
Invincible) ($49,500), the leading second season sire by stakes winners
with five, in front of money-earning leader Rubick (Encosta De Lago)
(two) and Deep Field (Northern Meteor) (three).
The remainder of Darley’s stallion roster, including champion Lonhro
(Octagonal) ($66,000), Astern (Medagalia d’Oro) ($22,000), Epaulette
(Commands) ($22,000) and Harry Angel (Dark Angel) ($16,500), have all
had their service fees reduced.

“I think he’s
going to come as a little bit of a shock and a
surprise to the market that he is standing under
the Newgate banner, but he’s a horse we just felt
deserved his chance,” Slade told ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday.
“Obviously, he raced in the Godolphin
colours and I think everyone’s first memory of the
horse is that he is that X-factor horse that was the
early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Everyone
was so excited after his debut to see where he’d
go and where he’d get to, but unfortunately, due
to injury, he was never able to fulfill the potential
that he had shown on debut.”
That debut was an electric five and a quarter
length victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) at
Rosehill in November, 2018. It was a win that saw
Tassort assume early favouritism for that season’s Golden Slipper Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m), with form analysts rating his performance through the
roof: The Rating Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan declared it a “Group 1 class”
performance that was “stamped
by a sharp turn of foot, terrific late
strength and fast overall time”,
placing him in rarefied company.
Unfortunately, the colt only
raced once more, when he was
sent out as an odds-on favourite
in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2,
1100m) at Rosehill. Slow from the
stalls, he settled near the rear in an
evenly-run race, making ground
late into second but unable to reel
in Time To Reign (Time For War).
“We had key indicators
through this horse’s career that
told us he was elite and just
never had the chance to show it,”
Slade said. “We are big on time ratings and data. Daniel O’Sullivan from
The Ratings Bureau gave this guy a 103 on debut when he won. He was
impressive to the eye that day but when the time data came back, it said,
listen, this is as impressive a two-year-old debut that we’ve seen since the
likes of Estijaab and Extreme Choice. To be honest, at the time, we thought
we had a colt to be really concerned about on the racetrack, wearing our
Newgate cap!
“Obviously we never got to see that ability but on the back of that
performance, that debut, James McDonald came out and said he was the
real deal and James Cummings was very much of the same opinion, he
had a very high opinion of the horse. Everyone that had something to do
with him plus the time data suggested he had the ability to be that real
elite performer.
Slade continued: “At the end of the day, for all of us, our key criteria
for any young stallion standing at Newgate is that elite race performance.
Horses don’t have to win their Group 1s, but if they showed elite
performance, they generally are your best chance of becoming an
important stallion.
“I just feel you only have to look at the general sires list to see that. They are
either proper, proper Group 1 horses, or they were horses who had that ability but
didn’t get to showcase their true potential.

Former South Australian rider Jerry
Chau made a dream home debut
at Sha Tin yesterday, driving first
past the post not once but twice
just five days after teaming up with his new
boss Douglas Whyte, the first-season handler
best known as Hong Kong’s iconic 13-time
champion jockey.
The ten-pound claimer was three rides into
his new assignment when his breakthrough win
arrived atop Relentless Me (Statue Of Liberty),
a 2/1 shot in the Class 3 Crystal Handicap
(1200m). He rounded his four-ride step-out
with a mature victory on the John Moore-
trained Buddies (So You Think) in the Class 1
Amber Handicap (1400m).
“I didn't think I could have a double on my first
day but I’m really lucky and very thankful, especially
to Mr. John Moore and my boss,” Chau said.
“The first win was very exciting, especially
as I won for my mentor. He has already taught
me a lot, in particular those things that I need
to pay attention to when riding in Hong Kong.
He knows everything about Hong Kong racing
and he has encouraged me to keep on asking
questions. He said to me: ‘If you don’t ask, you
will never know,’ so that’s what I will do.”
Whyte was pleased with his protégé’s first-
time performance in the unforgiving cauldron
of Hong Kong racing.
“He’s ridden phenomenally well for his
first day and with a little bit of luck on Smiling
City it could have been three winners. It’s about
building momentum now and building a bit of
confidence,” the trainer noted.
“He’s riding with his head and that’s what
you need to do in Hong Kong. We need to make
sure it doesn't go to his head and that’s what
I’ve got to be there for. Today is a great day and
tomorrow’s another day – don't worry, he’ll be
working tomorrow morning!”
Chau displayed intelligence aboard
Buddies, settling third on a horse more
accustomed to making the running, following
advice from Whyte and instruction from Moore.
“Yesterday when we walked the track
and I gave him a bit of advice, he’s obviously
absorbed it and he’s riding the ‘C’ Course
according to how it should be ridden – very
‘heady’,” Whyte said.
“With Buddies, we went through the racing
pattern and I said to him to not be afraid to talk to
Mr. Moore and if something goes crazy let them go;
I told him ‘this horse has never taken a sit before
and you could make the difference’ – well, he did it.
If he’d taken on the horse in front something would
have been coming from the back.”
Chau took the counsel and applied it to
winning effect.
“After the jump I saw the leader come
across and he was travelling really well; my
horse was comfortable sitting with cover and
when I moved out in the straight he kicked
really well,” he said.
Chau, 20, was called home after just
one year of his overseas placement in South
Australia, where he was indentured to the Leon
Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas stable – he
notched 77 wins there at a solid 14 per cent
strike rate. His first Hong Kong success came
one year and one day after his initial career
victory at Balaklava aboard Serious Spender
(Bernardini).
“It’s all come about quite fast for me,” Chau
said. “It was surprising news when our (Hong
Kong Jockey Club Apprentice Jockeys’ School)
Headmistress (Amy Chan) rang me and told
me that I could be back in Hong Kong the next
week. I was very happy about it!” he revealed.
The youngster settled his first winner,
Relentless Me, on the rail, two lengths off the
leader’s back, and opted to shift out for a clear
run into the straight. Chau picked up his stick
and began to urge at the 300m mark and his
mount responded with grinding progress.
That momentum continued when the
apprentice’s stick flew turf-ward – Chau kept
his cool for a tidy hands and heels push through
the line.
“When I went to pull the whip through,
maybe I was a bit nervous but I dropped my
whip. I had to push the horse hands and heels
and I screamed at the horse, but the horse was
so honest for me and I’m very happy that I was
able to win the race in the end,” he said.
Chau had four rides on the day and he
opened with fourth-place for trainer Ricky
Yiu, who played a guiding role in the rider’s
education before he ventured to Australia. And
with the Whyte-trained Smiling City (So You
Think) placing a half-length third in race six,
his stats showed a 50% win strike rate and every
mount picked up a cheque.

Moreira closes in with a treble
Joao Moreira outpointed Zac Purton three
wins to zero with a skillful treble to move to
within one of his championship rival, having
been winless against the Australian’s five-timer
at Happy Valley midweek.
The scores at the end of the day stood
at 113-114, with 18 race meetings left in the
current Hong Kong season.
The Brazilian wrapped up the trio atop the
John Size-trained Hong Kong Win (Mossman)
in the Class 2 Amethyst Handicap (1000m).
“He had a smooth run today, so
circumstances just played his way. He’s a good
horse and he’s still in the making,” he said.
Moreira rode a sweet stalking race on
Perfect To Play (Born To Sea), settling behind
the lead and waiting for the gap to open
midway down the straight. He asked his
mount to quicken when daylight was sighted
and, reacting to strong insistence, the Caspar
Fownes-trained galloper battled on to take the
Class 4 Sapphire Handicap (1800m) by a neck.
One race later, the ‘Magic Man’ overcame gate
12 to score aboard the Francis Lui-trained This One’s
For You (Lethal Force) in the Class 4 Ruby Handicap
(1650m, dirt). Moreira had to bide his time as he
plotted a path through traffic, eventually pulling
wide in the straight for a clear run to nick it by a head
from Party Everyday (Snitzel).
The win took Moreira’s total wins this
term for the yard to six from only 17 rides – an
impressive strike rate of 35 per cent.
“Sometimes you find luck and I had a bit of
it with those two earlier rides. Hopefully we can
keep on kicking in winners!” he said.
Borges in the zoneVagner Borges is eight weeks into his
current Hong Kong contract and took his tally
to seven wins with a first double in the city,
having drawn a blank from 31 rides during his
debut stint last July.
The Brazilian struck first in race two, the
Class 3 Jasper Handicap (1650m, dirt), aboard
Touch Of Luck (Hard Spun) for the in-form
Moore stable. The success took the rider’s
record for the trainer – at that juncture – to three
wins at a 30 per cent win strike rate.
“John Moore has helped me a lot, he treats
me well and gives me some nice rides,” Borges
said through an interpreter.
Borges followed up in the next, section
one of the Class 4 Peridot Handicap (1200m),
when galvanizing the Michael Chang-trained
Gallant Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) to a length
and three-quarter score. The International Sale
graduate’s maiden win at start nine took the
handler to 13 wins for the term.
“I have to thank the trainers and owners for
the opportunities they have given me,” Borges
said. “This support allows me to show that I can
do a good job – I’m happy with how things are
going right now.”
Karis Teetan and Benno Yung teamed
successfully for the third time this term to bag a
second win on the bounce for the lightly-raced
Humble Steed (Kodiac), another graduate of
the Hong Kong International Sale. The Class
5 Topaz Handicap (1600m) was only the 10th
race for the six-year-old across three seasons,
due to a catalogue of leg injuries.
Antoine Hamelin claimed the finale, the Class
3 Emerald Handicap (1400m), with yet another
thunderous wide-and-late charge, this time on
the Jimmy Ting-trained Assimilate (Sebring).
The first race of the day, section two of
the Class 4 Peridot Handicap (1200m), saw
Alfred Chan secure an early lead on Hinyuen
Swiftness (Duke Of Marmalade) and the seven-
year-old rolled on gamely to give trainer Dennis
Yip his 19th win of the season.

Analysis: Stepping up after a seven lengths win at Pakenham a month
ago, Russian Camelot could not have been more impressive, scoring
a first class win here at just his fifth career start. He settled fourth last,
one out with a lap to run but was pushed three deep past the 1600m.
Inside the 1200m he was last but still three deep where he remained to
the 600m. From the 400m he improved quickly, was widest starting the
run home then booted up to be third at the 200m. Laying in he caught
the leader but inside the 100m lengthened stride for a dominant length
and three quarters lengths win. Dalasan sat seventh in the clear past the
1000m, moved out at the 600m and cruised up three wide to be handy at
the top of the straight. He grabbed the lead at the 200m, drifted toward
the rail but was nabbed by the winner at the 100m and was no match
to the line. Warning was sixth (rails) from the 800m, got a run along
the fence at the 400m and had a great view. Under pressure he drove
into third but was never going to endanger the first two. A solid staying
effort from the filly Zayydani who was third last at the 600m, took some
time to wind up in the straight then finished well for fourth. Pacemaker
Moonlight Maid tried to slip them into the straight, was collared at the
200m but fought hard for her fifth.[LJ]

Then followed: The Last Charge (AUS), Ecumenical (AUS), Discrepancy
(NZ), Indictment (AUS), Shebringzit (AUS), Vondexter (AUS), Biarchi
(AUS), Vancouver Velvet (AUS) & Bribery (AUS), last.
Analysis: The addition of blinkers following a wayward fourth on debut
made a huge difference for Ringbolt who, in an upset, had this under
control soon after turning for home. He was first into stride then dropped
into second, one off the fence past the 1000m. He went up to eyeball
the leader at the 600m, took over narrowly at the top of the straight, was
given a fight to the 100m but came away by a length at the post. Violinist
took up the pace from the 1000m, was caught rounding into the straight
and gave the winner a tussle to the 100m but had to settle for second.
Crown Mint went up four wide at the 600m to sit just back and outside
the lead, third turning in then battled gamely to hold third from The Late
Charge who also battled well in the straight for fourth. Warm favourite
Ecumenical had every chance, making a late dab for fifth.[LJ]

MOSSMANAustralian Champion 2yo Sire
Analysis: Tambo’s Mate took his record to eight wins and four placings
from 16 starts in scoring his first Group victory here, albeit by the barest
of margins. He settled nicely outside the leader (Mishani Hustler)
travelling at a reasonable tempo (first 600m 35.88). He took a narrow
advantage at the 200m and then fought back gamely to score by a short-
half-head. Deep Image raced in third place (one out and one back)
before improving nearing the turn. He challenged strongly at the 200m
and then battled very well for a very close second. The well-supported
Outback Barbie had a nice trip in fourth place on the rails. She got a split
at the 200m and kept fighting on in the sprint home for third in a sound
first-up effort. Vega One settled in second last place, made a wide move
at the turn and did well in making ground in the sprint home for fourth,
beaten a length. Kementari was wide early on before settling in seventh
place, one off the rails. He improved (deep) from the 600m and made
ground under his 61kg for (1.1 lengths) fifth at his third run back. [KB]

Analysis: Game Keeper recorded a slashing win from well back and
wide, joining in at the 150m then bolting clear for the easiest of wins,
his fourth, three on the trot and maiden stakes at start nine. He dropped
out to second last soon after the jump then ran up three deep from the
1000m to tag onto the pack yet still second last. He crept closer inside
the 600m but turning for home had plenty to do. Widest at the top of
the straight he bounded forward, levelled up near the 150m then burst
clear for a big win, away by three lengths. A super run from Hypercane
who was last at the 800m, tracked the winner (still last) into the straight
and finished strongly for second. Quantum Mechanic sat just back and
outside the pace from the 600m, co-led at the 300m and had a narrow
lead at the 200m but had no answer over the final 150m. From fourth
turning in Done By Me had every chance and battled away for fourth.[LJ]

Analysis: The highly consistent Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained filly
Vanna Girl scored a good first-up win, taking her record to five wins and
two seconds from eight starts in recording her first stakes success here.
After leading early on, she eased to race in third place on the rails before
going through to challenge on straightening. She got the upper hand
in the closing stages and then drew clear to win well. Supergiant went
to the front and set a reasonably sound tempo before grabbing a break
on straightening. He then fought back well for second after running a
bold race, advancing in class here. Ballistic Boy had a nice trip in fourth
place (one out and one back). He moved up at the turn and kept fighting
on quite well for third with his stablemate Profit making ground from
seventh at the turn, without threatening, for (3.8 lengths) fourth. [KB]

nicely for Glen Boss with sixth place, tracking a solid tempo. She moved
up at the turn, challenged at the 200m and finished too well to score
a good win. The German-bred entire Ilwendo, returning after racing
in Queensland, went to the front and set a good pace and then fought
gamely in the straight for (long head) second, staging a really good effort.
Best Of Days enjoyed an ideal trip in third place on the rails and battled
on quite well to hold the minor placing with Aliferous making late
ground for (4 lengths) fourth after being well back to the turn. [KB]

Then followed: Crack Me Up (NZ), Deprive (AUS), Murillo (USA),
Tactical Advantage (AUS), Signore Fox (AUS), All Too Royal (AUS) &

Analysis: Progressive sprinter Snitz staged a smart effort in winning here,
his first stakes victory and his fourth win in succession. Having his second
run this preparation, after showing his usual early pace he tracked the free-
running leader (Murillo) at a fast pace before going to the front at the 300m.
He then fought back gamely for a very good win. The favourite Greyworm
settled back in third place, some eight lengths from the leader, before
commencing his move from the 300m. He then continued to make ground
for (half-length) second in yet another very honest performance. Redouble
raced well back in fifth place and wide and then did well in running on
for third in a promising first-up effort. His Bjorn Baker-trained stablemate
Crack Me Up raced in second last place and did really well in running on for
(1.1 lengths) fourth, resuming here for his new stable. [KB]

If recent history is any guide, then
Western Australian galloper Gatting
faces a monumental task to repeat his
Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1
Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s
Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Not only does the son of Hard Spun have
to defy the usually huge odds against longshot
winners repeating, he’d become just the third
horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25
have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)
and Northerly (2002) have been successful.
Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee
Stakes winners has managed to win another race
during the spring which is verily dumbfounding
and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status
in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has
six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres
in about as many weeks.
In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes
— won this year by Homesman — has been a
much better portent of things to come through
the balance of the spring carnival.
Six of the past ten Feehan winners have
won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions
include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,
who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic
Consol who didn’t race again that year.
Four of the past five Underwood Stakes
winners have come via the Feehan including,
of course, Homesman who won last year after
finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and
he looks a superior horse in 2019.
Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won
the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare
Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they
saddle another four-year-old, this time male,
in The Chosen One — who looks the principal
danger to Homesman.
The follow-up form of major race winners
is something of a fascination and generally less
impressive than you might think. Examining
the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is
interesting.
Begood Toya Mother was a fast and
spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes
albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing
him with some unexpected cover.
Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be
spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted
Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,
is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in
the past ten years] to have had an immediate
break and he returned to run second to Black
Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then
went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.
Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the
only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten
years, to score again that spring - taking the
Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy
Handicap respectively.
Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3
Naturalism Stakes has produced just two
subsequent springtime winners in the past
decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group
1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won
the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in
the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group
1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last
year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a
short neck.
Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)
was one and a half lengths away in third.
The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A
Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).
"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was
warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.
"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're
going to be in this'."
It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago
after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).
An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was
delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.
It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which
almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six
months after being seriously injured last October.
"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like
getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.
"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my
broken neck it's been a long road.
"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as
rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.
"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.
"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about
him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.
"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he
could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive
victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at
The Valley last night.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding
harboured plenty of criticism after his last
start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
when he failed to settle on the front end.
However, he showed he is a bona fide Group
1 horse with an impressive win in the $1
million sprint.
Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip
began well from the inside barrier and was able
to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.
The track record holder over the course
and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes
(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly
around the turn and was able to hold off a
gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a
short neck. Continued on page 2>>

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)
closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian
McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further
back in fourth.
Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative
attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.
"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism
with him than we ever got with
another certain horse [Winx]
who was probably our last Group
1 winner here.
"That's racing, everyone has
got their opinions. He's a good
horse and today he stepped away
well. James didn't panic he just
got there gradually and it was a
good race.
"You think punters get
frustrated, well owning a horse
and training a horse when you're
running in these types of races,
it's a bitter pill to take when you
don't quite get it right.
"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had
something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I
did everything wrong."
Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at
Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race
will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week
later.
"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just
see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The
Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."
Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race
while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over
the mare's performance.
McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,
two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.
"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.
"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the
race."
Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne
Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)
took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money
of $1,879,285.
