Williams Dear Parishioners, In todays gospel of St Luke the Apostles ask Jesus to teach them to pray and so we are given the gift of that great prayer the Our Father. When we say the Our Father we are in no doubt that we are actually praying and communicating with our God. Much in all of our lives prayer is much more diverse that the recitation of the Our Father, we pray in a thousand different and effective ways, sometimes barely being aware that we are in fact praying. It is only when we try to analyse prayer that it becomes somewhat complicated and difficult. When we communicate with God, when we say thank god for this or for that, when we wish someone a blessing, when we pray for someone elses wellbeing in our own simple words, or when we simply sit in Church and are aware of the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle, barely saying a word …. In all of this we are in fact praying. We are lifting our thoughts and mind to God. Often our prayer is very simple as when we say sorry to God for the mistakes we make when we offend others, when we repent of the serious lapses that we are ashamed of in trying to live well, when we are conscious of the selfishness that prevents us helping the needy. But it is also prayer when we attempt to love and serve our neighbour in everyday ways. To look with compassion on those who need us, to hold the hand of those who might stumble, to listen with love to those who try to make sense of a difficult life or situation is to stand in prayer before God. It is not all the words that we say or the hours on our needs (important though they may be) but the awareness of Gods presence all around us. If we are aware of his Presence it is very difficult not to pray in some way or other, be it in word or in action. Sometimes we may feel the need to say our familiar prayers like the Our Father as taught by Jesus in todays Gospel, or love the comfort of the familiar Hail Mary as we let the rosary slip through our fingers, at other times we may simply like to sit silently in the presence of Our Lord either at home or in Church. All of it is our prayer. When we come to the celebration of the Eucharist we find ourselves taking part in the most powerful prayer of all. We thank God for the gift of his closeness. First Holy Communion Commitment Sunday

Today and all this weekend is Commitment Sunday for those families with children who will be making their First Holy Communion this year. This is the occasion when the children and parents commit themselves to the preparation for the reception of this great sacrament. As all of us who are adult will well remember it is a great day in our young lives when we receive the Blessed Sacrament for the first time. In welcoming our families and children I thank the parents and grandparents of the children for their participation and generosity in making this marvellous occasion a memorable one for the children. May I also thank the teachers’ and catechists who make themselves available to help for the four weeks involved in the children’s preparation. A special words of appreciation to Mrs Pauline Kelly who has once again taken on the responsibility of organizing the whole preparation.

The children have prayer cards that they have been asked to distribute either before or after Mass. Please make the children feel welcome and thanks to those who accept the invitation to pray that the children prepare well to receive Jesus in the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist for the first time.

Thank you for your very kind and generous response to the Mary McKillop International Appeal on last Sunday. We have sent them a cheque for over $3000 dollars, the fruits of your generosity.
