But one thing that has always been held forefront in my mind is the ideal of finding God in all things. It is easiest to begin this daunting task by first changing the word “God” to good. All you have to do is add one extra “o”! Seriously, though, take the time each day to relax and reflect on all of the good you experienced that day. It could be an awesome grade you received, it could be a friend when you needed them, it could even be the simple smile of a stranger. Whatever it is, find it, embrace it, then thank God for it. Community has come to mean so much more to me since I have been a member of the University of Scranton. Scranton truly is a place where when someone falls down, everyone comes running to help them up. This may be a bit of a hyperbole; however, a stroll down the Commons shows how much compassion and genuine love there is on this campus. A hundred smiling faces are always waiting for me as I walk down our beloved z-bricks. From the administration to the cafeteria workers to the students to the maintenance staff, everyone in this community has a true sense of appreciation for one another. In Scranton, I feel like I am part of a larger family. If we could translate our community in Scranton to the entire world, I think a lot of the debilitating problems facing the world today would diminish quickly. At the University of Scranton, we do not merely learn how to make the best possible lives for ourselves. Instead, we learn the values of Cura Personalis, Magis, and Metanoia. We are encouraged to go forth and set the world on fire with our passion and our talents. We are not here to make life better for ourselves, rather we are charged to make life better for everyone. I challenge you to commit to this charge and to let the Ignatian principles of the University of Scranton flow through you and set your life on fire. “A fire kindles other fires. Fourth Sunday of Lent

A Life Set on Fire

Through my time at Scranton I have learned many things that have

twisted and turned the way I think, the way I act, the way I live. Many fancy

Latin phrases have been drummed into my mind countless times and to be

honest they have made a difference. But one thing that has always been held

forefront in my mind is the ideal of finding God in all things. It is easiest to

begin this daunting task by first changing the word “God” to good. All you

have to do is add one extra “o”! Seriously, though, take the time each day to

relax and reflect on all of the good you experienced that day. It could be an

awesome grade you received, it could be a friend when you needed them, it

could even be the simple smile of a stranger. Whatever it is, find it, embrace

it, then thank God for it.

For me, I have been blessed to find God in the people and the

community here at the University of Scranton. Community has come to mean

so much more to me since I have been a member of the University of Scranton.

Scranton truly is a place where when someone falls down, everyone comes

running to help them up. This may be a bit of a hyperbole; however, a stroll

down the Commons shows how much compassion and genuine love there is on

this campus. A hundred smiling faces are always waiting for me as I walk

down our beloved z-bricks. From the administration to the cafeteria workers

to the students to the maintenance staff, everyone in this community has a true

sense of appreciation for one another. In Scranton, I feel like I am part of a

larger family. If we could translate our community in Scranton to the entire

world, I think a lot of the debilitating problems facing the world today would

diminish quickly.

At the University of Scranton, we do not merely learn how to make the

best possible lives for ourselves. Instead, we learn the values of Cura

Personalis, Magis, and Metanoia. We are encouraged to go forth and set the

world on fire with our passion and our talents. We are not here to make life

better for ourselves, rather we are charged to make life better for everyone. I

challenge you to commit to this charge and to let the Ignatian principles of the

University of Scranton flow through you and set your life on fire.

“Today our prime

educational

objective must be

to form men-and-

women-for-others;

men and women

who will live not

for themselves but

for God and his

Christ - for the

God-man who

lived and died for

all the world; men

and women who

cannot even

conceive of love of

God which does

not include love

for the least of

their neighbors;

men and women

completely

convinced that

love of God which

does not issue in

justice for others

is a farce.”

Students look forward to this event each semester, as they are missing their own pets at

home.

FOURTH DAY RETREAT

Catholic Relief Services is working with Caritas International and others to find pathways to bring aid to the many thousands stricken by the earthquake and tsunami that devastated northern Japan.

"The people of Japan who have suffered this tragedy are our brothers and sisters," Sean Callahan, vice president of overseas operations said. "CRS has determined there was minimal damage from the tsunami in countries where we have programs - such as the Philippines and Indonesia. Our focus now is on the people of Japan."

Caritas Japan has indicated that for now it will not be involved in immediate relief work, a huge operation run by the Japanese Army, but will focus on long-term recovery. In a statement, Caritas Japan noted that the damage is not only physical but also psychological. "We will accompany people who lost their beloved, who lost everything and may stay at temporary shelter, and who have no one to rely on," the statement said.

The president of Caritas Japan, Bishop Isao Kikuchi SVD says, "We have received so many emails from all continents, filled with words of compassion and prayer. We are very grateful for this solidarity. We believe that aid activity is needed, but prayer is also important in such a situation."
