1986Dr. H. Mahler, the Director of the World Health Organization(WHO) announces that as many as 10 million people world-wide could already be infected with HIV.
The first Walk to raise funds to assist people living withHIV/AIDS in Orange County is established by a group of caring citizens and volunteers. The money is distributed among several agencies to help pro-vide essential prevention and care programs.
1991Women now constitute the fastest-growing group of people with AIDS.During the 1990s, World Health Org-anization estimates that the pandemicwill kill an additional 3 million or morewomen and children world-wide.
AIDS Services Foundation increasesits services due to the CARE Actenacted by Congress on August 18,1990. The CARE Act represents thelargest investment made by theFederal Government specifically forthe provision of services for peopleliving with HIV disease.
1996Protease inhibitors are introduced as anew drug in the fight against HIV. Forthe first time in the epidemic, there is amarked decrease in deaths among peoplewith AIDS. Unfortunately, the high cost ofthese drugs prevents many people from get-ting the help they need.
AIDS Services Foundation steps forward andassumes responsibility for theplanning, implementa-tion and management ofAIDS Walk Orange County, and is recognized as the lead-ing provider of HIV/AIDS services toclients in Orange County.
2001The number of new HIV infections continues to increase eachyear and deaths continue to decrease in the United States. Theresult is more people living with HIV and AIDS. Additionalresources are needed for services, treatment, and care.
The first AIDS case in Orange Countywas reported 20 years ago in
1981. Since then 5,782 peoplehave been diagnosed with AIDSin Orange County and 52%have died. AIDS Walk OrangeCounty has raised nearly$10 million since 1986towards services and programs
for people living with HIV/AIDS.
2006The CDC reports that more than 1
million people are living withHIV/AIDS in the United States. While
better medicines are keeping morepeople with HIV alive, government
health officials have failed to “break theback” of the AIDS epidemic by their stated
goal of 2005.
ASF simultaneously commemorates 20 years of serviceas AIDS Walk celebrates 20 years of action in OrangeCounty. As of December 2004, an estimated more than8,000 men, women and children are living withHIV/AIDS in Orange County. ASF continues to lead thefight in Orange County to end the spread of HIV/AIDS.
