JAMES RIVER OUTDOOR COALITION (JROC)

JROC was founded over 20 years ago with the mission of providing

resources to make improvements in and around the James River Park

System, as well as to educate and advise on issues pertaining to the park

system. It is a 100% volunteer organization whose primary roles are 1)

identify necessary park maintenance and improvements, 2) perform the

needed work, 3) raise the funds for materials and support for those

improvements, and 4) help educate and advise on issues pertaining to

the Park.

When JROC was founded, the Park was not on the city administration’s

radar as a defining asset for Richmond and only had one employee,

Ralph White - a former member of this congregation. During the

intervening years, JROC, and other dedicated organizations such as

Friends of the James River Park, James River Association, rvaMore, Coastal

Canoeists and others, have collaborated and worked independently

within the park and advocated for it. Now much of the Park is under a

conservation easement and is an award winning urban wilderness area

offering urban whitewater, destination trail systems, bike skills park and

opportunities for all levels of boating, hiking, fishing, swimming, and

birding. During 2017, 1.7 million people visited the park, primarily from

outside the City of Richmond. The park provides an estimated economic

impact of $12.7 million dollars.

JROC is now taking on one of its largest, complex and most expensive

projects – the design and build of universal access at the Huguenot

Flatwater canoe/kayak launch, at an expected total cost of over

$200,000. The need for geotechnical, structural and civil engineering to

design and build a deeply anchored switchback ramp, has made it

necessary for JROC to have almost 100% of the project contracted out.

JROC and JRPS have paid over $26,000 for the initial design survey work to

have adequate information, construction documents, etc. in hand for

submitting grant applications, b But JROC is expecting that grants will only

cover 50-75% of the costs. Our fundraising efforts for this project are

occurring on many levels. Your generosity through Share the Plate is an

important one.

If you would like any additional information on the James River Outdoor

Coalition or the Huguenot Flatwater Universal Access project, please feel

free to contact Sally Wetzler at [email protected]/

Checks should be made payable to First UU.

A reminder about Share the Plate: The monies in the

collection (that aren’t designated as Pledge payments)

are split 50/50 with the recipient and First UU.

hoping that you are as dedicated as we are to growing and learning in

religion, to being together in a caring community, and working toward a

better world.

If you are a visitor to our congregation, please stop by the Visitors’ Table in

the foyer to learn about this church and Unitarian Universalism. Your

available for your written reflections.

Please be mindful: There are members of the

congregation who are sensitive to fragrances –

please do not wear fragrance to church
