· Baptism Preparation Program ~ To Register, call the Rectory at 724-265-2070. The next program for parents and Godparents preparing for the Baptism of their child will be Saturday, July 14, 10:00 to 11:30am, in the large classroom under the Church. The Baptism Program is offered quarterly. Parents are encouraged to take part in this gathering even before the birth of their child. It is important that parents and Godparents be-come even more aware of the beauty of the Rite of Bap-tism and their responsibilities in raising children in the

practice of the faith.

Guidelines About Cremation… I am noticing that cremation is becoming more common. Here is a summary of the most recent document from the Vatican (2016) concerning guide-lines for cremation. Although the Church continues to prefer burial in the ground, it accepts cremation as an option, but forbids the scattering of ashes and the growing practice of keeping cremated

remains at home. Also forbidden is the practice of dividing up ashes among family members. The Church teaches that the same respect must be given to cremated remains as is given to the body of the deceased. Cremated re-mains are often brought to the church for a funeral Mass, during which the cremated remains are blessed with holy water (as a reminder of Baptism) and incensed (as a sign of respect for the deceased). When a family is considering cremation, the wishes of the deceased person must be taken into consideration: did the deceased express a desire for cremation? The Vatican Instruction notes that cremation does not “prevent God, in his omnipotence, from raising up the deceased body to new life.” Sometimes the body is brought to the church for the funeral Mass and cremation follows. Other times the cremated remains are brought to the church for the Funeral Mass if the cremation precedes the funeral liturgy. Note, though, that the Church always expects that cre-mated remains be properly buried, that is “laid to rest in a consecrated place.” Cremated remains are not to be scattered or buried anywhere, but rather the person’s ashes are to be placed “in a columbarium or tomb, and the place is appropriately marked.” Cremated remains are sometimes buried over another person’s grave, but this new internment should have its own marker. In summary, the Church recognizes that the practice of cremation has become more common in many places, but respect for the cremated remains, as respect for a body of the deceased, must always reflect the important Chris-tian belief about the resurrection of the dead. If you have questions about these guidelines, please contact me at the rectory. Summer Maintenance… There are a number of projects we have scheduled to complete on the property this summer. We have already had to make repairs to the air conditioning system in the church (one new air handler installed) and in the activity building (one motor replaced). We have plans to replace the roof on the storage garage and install new sidewalks along the porch below the church (some funds for these projects were obtained from a local charitable trust). We are also exploring leveling the concrete pads on the sidewalk that runs from the front of the church down to the parking lot. Some repairs to the parking lots and driveways are also planned. Flashing that blew off from the back of the church must repaired and we need to replace light bulbs on the outside light poles. We also hope to finish remodeling the restroom in the vestibule of the church. We are still looking for someone who can repair the outdoor sign. Your generous contributions to the parish help us with all these necessary pro-jects! We are doing our best to make repairs and upgrade areas of the campus.

Whoever Does the Will of God is My Brother and Sister and Mother – It should be no sur-prise that we refer to the relationships within our church or parish in terms of family. The roots of faith run deep and the bonds that we form with those we pray and serve with grow stronger with each encounter. Saint Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans, “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:16-17). By virtue of our baptism we share in the life of God and are welcomed into his family, the Church. Yet, this relationship

of love is not passive or stagnant. We are called to live to the fullest the life and purpose the Spirit inspires within us. As we seek to form new relationships both within and among our parishes as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, may our efforts bring about the strengthening of our faith family. As we grow in love for Jesus and each other may we vibrantly fulfill our mission as sons and daughters of God and seek to do his will. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
