  • St. Peter Damien Feast Day Feb. 21 St. Peter Damien, OSB, was a great church reformer during a time of crisis among the clergy and religious. He reluc-tantly left a hermit’s life to take charge of his religious community and establish five hermitages in Italy. Later, as bishop of Ostia, he was involved in important church events, yet he pleaded to be allowed to return to the solitary prayer life. Peter is credited with many spiritual writings. To a bishop he once wrote, “Let your lips continually ruminate something from the scriptures.” He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1828.

The Chair of St. Peter the Apostle Feast February 22 While the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, celebrated on June 29, focuses on the martyrdom of St. Peter, this celebration draws attention to his role in the Church. The “Chair of St. Peter” is an image of his seat of authority— an authority that was given not for his own personal gain but so that he could be a source of unity for the Church. Jesus told Peter, “I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers” (Lk 22:32). Today, this feast reminds us of the significance of the ministry of St. Peter and the succession of popes who followed in his footsteps.

    St. Polycarp c.69–c. 156 Memorial—February 23

This disciple of St. John the Apostle was appointed bishop of Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey), perhaps by John. Representing the Asia Minor Churches, he went to Rome about 155 to discuss when to celebrate Easter. The result was that the Eastern and Western Churches continued to calculate the date as before. Shortly after his return, Polycarp was arrested and urged to renounce God. He refused and was sentenced to be burned alive. When the flames did not harm him, he was killed by a sword, as recounted in an early Christian document.

    What is Lent?

Lent is the forty-day liturgical season of fasting, special prayer, penitence, and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. The name "Lent" is from the Middle English Lenten meaning spring. If you haven't gone to confession in a while, Lent is the perfect time to reconcile yourself with God and the Church. Preparation for confession should include an examination of conscience, What you will experience is the healing gift of God's love. Days of Abstinence: No meat can be eaten on Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays during Lent. Catholics 14 and older. Days of Fast: Only one full meal is permitted on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for Catholics between 18 and 59. Two smaller meals are permitted, but the small meals should not equal a second full meal. Drinking coffee, tea and water between meals is allowed. Snacks between meals are not allowed. Giving up something for Lent fosters self-discipline and tempers our desires. It is a form of fasting. It is a form of penance. It promotes spiritual growth. think also about doing something positive to bolster your spiritual life and make the world a better place. Look for ways that you can increase your knowledge of your faith, strength-en your spiritual life or perform special acts of mercy and kindness at home, at work, in your parish or in your community.

“It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” —Mother Teresa

    NOBODY CAN DO EVERYTHING,

    BUT EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING…

"As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one

another as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Pt 4:10)

We are all called to be good stewards; however, we must first hear the call. Jesus calls us to share our time, our talents , and to share our treasure for the building of His Kingdom. Our Parish and school offer many opportunities for return-ing our gifts of time and talent to God. As faith-filled stew-ards, volunteering provides a way to thank God, share our faith with others, and enrich the fabric of our entire Parish community. Christ is our teacher. As Disciples of Christ, we must set a good example of our Stewardship to our community. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER

Lord, you alone are the source of every good gift, of the vast array of our universe, and the mystery of each human life. We praise you and we thank you for your great power and your tender, faithful love.

Everything we are and everything we have is your gift, and after having created us, You have given us the greatest of all gifts, your son, JESUS CHRIST.

Fill our minds with His truth and our hearts with His love, that in His Spirit we may be bonded together into a community of faithful, caring people.

In the name and spirit of Jesus, we commit ourselves to be good stew-ards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, our talent and our material gifts as an outward sign of the treasure we hold in Jesus.
