The Pastor Writes by Dr. Forrest Sheffield, Senior Pastor

The Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Seasons have come and gone and already the first month of 2015 is history. Time moves on and we cannot slow it down. Easter, Mother’s Day and Baccalaureate will be here quicker than we can imagine. That is why we must learn to enjoy every day and savor every moment of life. We all agree that time passes faster the older you get in life. Since 2014 has come to a close, I cannot keep from thinking about God’s blessings on our church. While He blessed us in so many ways, I want to share with you His financial blessings over the past year. I asked our Financial Secretary for this data so I could thank the Lord and thank you for your financial commitment to God’s work through Harrisburg. I am so thrilled for the joy of sharing with you once again that we exceeded our 2014 church budget of $3,168,299.35 by $259,953.29 which means we received $3,428,252.64 for the year. This reflects going over our budget by 8%. I looked back at our annual statistics and discovered that we have exceeded our church budget for the last 27 years. Because

of the excess budget money over the years, we have been able to keep our buildings in good shape such as the $290,000.00 we recently spent on resurfacing the exterior stucco on the building. There will be several other projects that will be completed this year because of excess budget money. In 2014, we gave $475,244.88 through the Cooperative Program to Southern Baptist causes. We give 15% through the Cooperative Program from our church approved budget each year. I fully and totally support the God-blessed and God-inspired method of Southern Baptist churches working together and giving a church-approved percentage of their budget through the Cooperative Program. Since 1925, Southern Baptists have been the envy of all other mainline denominations on how we carry out the Great Commission and fund our State Convention ministries, our seminaries, our International and North American Mission Boards and many other Southern Baptist ministries and causes. Two other churches that I have pastored in the past have given 30% and 32% of their undesignated budget income. I am a believer in and a strong supporter of our method for world missions called the Cooperative Program. Our total gifts to mission causes in 2014 was $819,727.86. Harrisburg is a pacesetter church for leading the way and making sure that we continue to give liberally to missions. I am also excited to tell you that we exceeded our goal this year for the Lottie Moon Offering. Our goal was $84,000.00 and we have thus far received $84,203.18. I knew it was a sizable goal when Jane Burns and our WMU set the goal this year, but it was not too large for us to achieve. Now, we know that we have the financial capability to reach such a high goal. WMU, I see no reason why we don’t have a goal this December of at least $100,000.00 for our Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions. I expect to hear this time next year that we exceeded $100,000.00 for the Lottie Moon Offering! The last great financial blessing I want to mention in 2014 was the receiving of $150,000.00 to finish the Youth Adventure Lodge facility. We now have a total of $154,715.94 in this fund. Back last October, when I met with our Trail Life USA leadership and asked them how much money we needed to complete The Lodge, the dollar figure of $150,000.00 surfaced. That became our goal. We put together a 3-4 week plan that included testimonies, challenges, music, and a pulpit emphasis. God honored the prayers and plans of our leadership and here we are with enough money to complete the building, hopefully by summer. “To God be the glory, great things He has done!” I trust that you will rejoice with your staff and me as we thank God for these blessings from His people and for His glory. Thank you for being great stewards.

In Christ,Brother Forrest

STUDENT NEWS

THANK YOU! Disciple Now was a huge success. Our Students gathered with over 1,400 other students from the area for a weekend of Worship, Bible Study and Service. We filled the room at the Furniture Market and learned how to follow God even more with our lives. On Saturday we served a neighborhood by raking yards, preparing meals for families and delivering cookies and encouragement to every family in the neighborhood. Our Student Ministry is so thankful for host home parents, van drivers, our mission project helpers, our college leaders, the freshmen serve team, those who sorted shirts and supplies, people that provided meals, snacks, and served food, the countless people that prayed for the weekend and others that served to help make the weekend a HUGE success. We are thankful that we have a church that values students and provides opportunities for them to grow in their relationship with Christ!
