The rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the

process for adults to become members of the Catholic

PASTOR’S PARISHABLES

Don’t give up on Advent! If we ignore Advent we forfeit

some Christmas spirit. On culture's calendar, Christmas is

preceded by the Shopping Season. On our Catholic

calendar, it’s preceded by the Advent Season. If a person’s

lost the Christmas spirit, part of the reason may be that an

Advent spirituality has been neglected or ignored. We

hope the signs & liturgy in church will help: the wreath,

the prayers, the Scriptures, the music, the color. I

encourage your use of The Word Among Us too.

Five more days. The “battle” (as the ancients saw it)

between the light & the dark will soon turn in favor of the

light! “Winter begins,” some calendars say on December

21. Actually, it’d already begun in these parts, blustering

& barging into our lives. But regardless winter’s weather

that still may test us, at least the light will increase, little

by little. Coinciding with our celebration of the birth of

Christ, the Light of the World, even the annual solstice

seems to say, “The victory is begun; the forces of darkness

will not prevail. From now on, the darkness will decrease

& the light will increase.” Or in the words of John the

Baptist, “I must decrease, he must increase.”

1There will be only 1 Mass for this Marian holyday, at St.

Mary’s (since December 8th was at SS Peter & Paul).

It’s a season especially for renewal, & reconciliation.

The sacrament of reconciliation is a sign of the Church

being reconciled: not only preaching a message of hope to

the world, but experiencing & celebrating forgiveness

ourselves first. Additional times of reconciliation are

available this week—the final full week before Christ-

mas: Tues 4:30-5:30 pm; Wed 6:30-7:30 pm; Thur 4:30-

5:30 pm; Fri 11:30 am-12:30 pm; Sat 10-11 am, 4-5 pm.

On December 17th

Advent becomes a more direct

preparation for the coming feast. On December 17th, the

Church begins praying the so-called “O Antiphons” which

have long been the antiphons of the Magnifcat during

Evening Prayer & are now also prayed during Mass as the

gospel acclamation (the “alleluia verse”). They may sound

familiar because they have been set metrically in the hymn

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”

How about using the O Antiphons as your family pray-

er from December 17th to the 24

th? At table or bedside, for

example, day by day, a family could use the appropri-ate

O Antiphon verse of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,”

sung at the beginning & end, between which there could

be a candle-lighting, the reading of the day’s gospel,

intercessions & Lord’s Prayer. Or, simply pray all 7 to-

gether every day (using the text below), leader taking the

1st part & another or others taking the final phrase begin-

ning with the word “Come.” Notice that each antiphon

includes an address (a title of Jesus), a development

(“you…”), & finally a petition (“Come…”). This 3-part or

3-step formula is a good model for any personal praying.

The O Antiphons

1. O Wisdom, O holy Word of God,

you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care:

Come and show your people the way to salvation.

2. O Sacred Lord of ancient Israel,

who showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush,

who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain:

Come, stretch out your mighty hand to set us free.

3. O Flower of Jesse’s stem,

you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples;

kings stand silent, in your presence;

the nations bow down in worship before you;

Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid.

4. O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel

controlling at your will the gate of heaven:

Come, break down the prison walls of death

for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death;

and lead your captive people into freedom.

5. O Radiant Dawn,

splendor of eternal light, sun of justice:

Come, shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death.

6. O King of all the nations,

the only joy of every human heart;

O Keystone of the mighty arch of man:

Come and save the creature you fashioned from the dust.

7. O Emmanuel, king and lawgiver,

desire of the nations, Savior of all people:

Come and set us free, Lord our God.

A P.S. on the Bush funeral, mentioned in last Sunday’s

bulletin: I noted the songs used, including “Praise My

Soul the King of Heaven. It’s very familiar to us & in

many hymnals, typically 4 stanzas long. There is a 5th

stanza, I learned, inserted between the 3rd

& 4th: Frail as

summer's flower we flourish, / Blows the wind and it is

gone; / But while mortals rise and perish / God endures

unchanging one, / Praise Him, praise Him, / Praise Him,

praise Him, / Praise the High Eternal One! It’s based on

Psalm 103 &, like other songs at the funeral, was written

by an Anglican clergyman. That’s the tradition

(“Episcopalian,” commonly, in our country) of the Bush

family, so they were being true to their tradition.

day at 1:30 p.m.(after our youth are done practicing for the

Christmas Program) to actually decorate the church. Thanks

Advent Options Pregnancy Baby Shower for Jesus: SS

Peter & Paul will be collecting items for the Fairmont

Options Pregnancy Center during Advent. Some of the items

needed at this time are: Sleepers – size 0-3 months and 3-6

months for boys and girls, hooded bath towels, receiving

blankets for boys and girls, Avent bottles, sleep sacks, and

small packs of unscented wipes. Please put your items in

the cradle at the church entrance.

Adult Education: Our life can end without any notice and

nothing is more certain than death. Are you prepared? I don’t

mean having the funeral arrangement made and a plot in the

cemetery of your choice. Are you ready to meet our Lord?

Did you know the Catholic Church teaches there are two

judgments, the particular judgment and the final judgment?

We will be doing a 5 week study on the book and DVD titled

“The Four Last Things: Death Judgment, Heaven or Hell”

written by Fr. Wade Menezes, CPM. Every week we will

watch a portion of the DVD (about 30 min.) and there will be

time afterwards for discussion and questions. The book is not

essential when attending this class, but it does give you all

the information on the subject that will be covered weekly in

the DVD. We will meet on Thursdays – Jan. 24 & 31, Feb.

14, 21 & 28 from 1-2pm. If you are interested in attending,

Christmas Cantata at Hope United Methodist on Wed., Dec.

19 at 7PM. There will be a free will offering for Hospice.

You are invited to “A Blue Christmas” at Trinity Lutheran

Church on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 5PM especially for those who

have suffered losses through the year.

Pictorial Directories for SSPP and St. Mary’s are

available for those people that had their pictures taken for the

directory. At SS Peter & Paul the books are in alphabetical

order at the church entrance. At St. Mary’s, they are on a

table at the church entrance. Each book has a name and

address on it. We do have extra books available for a cost of

$5 to cover the costs involved with the directory. Call the

rectory to purchase one 526-5626.

This last week St. Mary’s Cemetery received a truly

wonderful gift from a family who wished to honor the memory

of their parents. This memorial has been designated for the new

statuaries at the cemetery. We are so grateful for the continued

support from all of you, as we continue to work on this special

project. The estimated cost for the statues, corpus, and base

cleaning is 14,829.00. This does not include the repair,

stabilization, and painting of the cross.

Project and complete a service project The Dragonfly Project sends condolence cards, a key chain and a message of hope to those who are grieving. We will hear from Jules, a mother who experienced the ultimate loss, the death of a child. She is very involved in the Dragonfly Project and will be giving our young people an opportunity to help this worthy organization by writing out cards and assembling key chains.
