Dear Cathedralites What a wonderful way to celebrate Pentecost this morning with the return to our cathedral with only 100 allowed to come in person. I am sure there will be many more watching over livestream. Make sure you all wear red. This week while I was in Christchurch taking a pretty sad funeral, I met a number of people who tuned in to our Cathedral services. This morning we look more closely at both the fruits of the Spirit (Gal: 5:22) of which there are nine, and the gifts of the Spirit (Eph 4:11). Five are mentioned here but other references consider seven or nine gifts. How about learning the fruits of the spirit off by heart? The world would be unrecognizable if we were all Spirit filled with the fruits. Today, Pentecost Sunday, let’s again ask the Holy Spirit to do that in us. Thanks to Canon Jocelyn Smith and her team in interpreting the rules related to Level 2. Of course, we are all keen to open up the cathedral 7 days a week, but such are the demands of cleaning, etc it will be a huge ask in the short term. I will rely on Canon Jocelyn for her recommendations. I am certainly looking forward to meeting others in person instead of Zoom this week, be it the Regional Deanery or the Loaves and Fishes. Bishop Steve will be coming on September 20 th for a confirmation service. All those wanting to be confirmed please contact Teresa or myself directly. We will run the course over 7 weeks, culminating in our September 20 th service. Confirmation is aimed at those wishing to make a personal commitment to Christ and by so doing ‘confirming’ the baptismal vows their parents made when they were children. Wasn’t it wonderful to hear that the two young trampers were rescued from Kahurangi National Park? It was fresh water that ensured survival. Remember Jesus saying to the woman at the well, “Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water that I will give will never be thirsty again.” “Sir”, the woman said, “give me that water.” (John 4:14) On this Pentecost Sunday we ask “Lord, fill me up again and again”. Have a great week. In His service, Mike Sunday Bulletin –31 st May 2020 Queens Birthday weekend PENTECOST SUNDAY

The processions enter the Cathedral as we sing the opening hymn CP 175 1 Come down, O Love divine,

seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

2 O let it freely burn,

till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

3 Let holy charity

mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

4 And so the yearning strong,

with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

All Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, In the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness:

we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen.

1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of

each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13 But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the

Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

Lord, in Your mercy

Hear our prayer

We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed

All We believe in one God, the Father the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, and has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Peace

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you.

Celebrant E te whanau, we are the body of Christ. All By one Spirit we were baptised into one body. Celebrant Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. All Amen. We are bound by the love of Christ. Minister of Liturgy We worship God with our tithes and offerings as we sing CP 383

1 Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the Holy One, is here; Come, bow before him now, with reverence and fear; In him no sin is found, we stand on holy ground, Be still, for the presence of the Lord, the holy One, is here.

2 Be still, for the glory of the Lord, is shining all around;

He burns with holy fire, with splendour He is crowned: How awesome is the sight, our radiant King of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord is shining all around.

3 Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place:

He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister His grace No work too hard for him, in faith receive from him. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.

Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right indeed, always and everywhere, to give thanks to you, the true and living God, through Jesus Christ. You are the source of life for all creation and you made us in your own image.

In your love for us you sent your Son to be our Saviour. In the fullness of time he became incarnate and suffered death on the cross. You raised him in triumph and exalted him in glory.

In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit, who came with signs from heaven to lead your Church into all truth. In the power of the Spirit, and made ready with his gifts, we take the joy of the gospel into the world. Through him you send your Holy Spirit upon your church and make us your people. And so, we proclaim your glory, as we say: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Please kneel or be seated

Celebrant To you indeed be glory, almighty God, because on the night before he died, your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when he had given you thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me.

After supper he took the cup, and when he had given you thanks, he gave it to them and said: This cup is the new covenant in my blood poured out for you; do this as often as you drink it to remember me.

All Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come in glory.

The Celebrant continues

Therefore, loving God, recalling now Christ’s death and resurrection, we ask you to accept this our sacrifice of praise. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and our

celebration, that we may be fed with the body and blood of your Son and be filled with your life and goodness.

Strengthen us to do your work, and to be your body in the world. Unite us in Christ and give us your peace. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit to be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen

The Communion

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen.

The Choir sings the Angus Dei as those in the sanctuary receive communion. (Child's Eucharist Setting)

The Invitation

The Celebrant invites the people saying

Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. All are welcome. Please come up the left-hand aisle, take one of the marked places at the altar rail and remain there until the entire rail is ready to move. Return by the right-hand aisle, maintaining social distancing at all times.

Those receiving Holy Communion are invited to do so by consuming the wafer when it is given to you. Gluten free wafers are available to those who need them. There will be no wine or grape juice available until further notice.

Prayer after Communion

Celebrant Almighty God, giver of all good things, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the precious body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. We thank you for your love and care in assuring us of your gift of eternal life and uniting us with the blessed company of all faithful people.

The nomination forms need to be received by the parish office by 12 noon on Friday 12th June. The Parish Office is also accepting applications for placement on the Parish Roll. This is a good time to update details, especially if you have moved house this year. (Remember, the Parishes Statute states, “No person may be enrolled on more than 1 parish electoral roll at the same time.”) *Should Covid19 rules not allow this meeting to take place, the date will be progressively pushed out week by week until we are allowed to gather in sufficient numbers.

The From Us with Aroha appeal has launched in Nelson, raising funds to send two concert

organists on a contactless tour to aged care facilities next month.

This is an amazing community project that I know all of you will see the benefit in! This brings my passion for Audio and Music together in a way I feel thrilled to be able to do. I'm putting everything i can into this, and i really need some help to get it the last bit of the way.

If you're able to assist with letting people know about this project, that would be fantastic! We had a news article on One News, and they forgot to mention we were fundraising. We are almost at the halfway point, and over the weekend, we have received offers for 2 different trucks in the north island, as well as we have now completed our South Island Truck. Kemp English will start his north island leg of the tour on the 5th of June (+/- a day) so we are hoping to be funded by then. Our Group 'From Us With Aroha Incorporated' is now a registered charity, so we welcome any donations that may be available. a receipt for Tax purposes can be provided which is fantastic!
