Significant Weather Features

♦ Yesterday, Severe cold wave and severe cold day conditions prevailed at most pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and in isolated pockets over Rajasthan.

♦ Due to favourable meteorological conditions, cold day to severe cold day conditions in most pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, north Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on today, at many pockets on tomorrow, the 30th December and abate thereafter.

♦ Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions is also very likely at some pockets over parts of northwest & east India during next 2 days and abate thereafter due to change in wind pattern at lower levels.

♦ Dense fog to very dense fog at some pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, north Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and north Madhya Pradesh during next 2 days and reduce significantly thereafter.

♦ A fresh Western Disturbance is very likely to affect Western Himalayan region from 30th December night onwards. Under the influence of Western Disturbance and its interaction with lower level easterlies, major parts of Central & adjoining northwest India are very likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied with hailstorm at isolated places during 1st & 02nd January, 2020.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rain/Thundershowers observed (from 0830 hours IST of yesterday to 0830 hours IST of today): at isolated places over Coastal & South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

♦ Rainfall recorded at 0830 hours IST of today (1 cm or more): Agumbe, Bajpe and Mangalore-3 each.

♦ Yesterday, Severe Cold Day conditions were observed in most pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar; in isolated pockets over north Rajasthan; Cold Day to Severe Cold Day conditions in many pockets over Madhya Pradesh; in isolated pockets over West Bengal and Cold Day conditions in some pockets over Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh.

♦ Severe cold wave conditions observed in some pockets over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir; in isolated pockets over Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh; Cold wave conditions in many pockets over Uttarakhand; in some pockets over Odisha; in isolated pockets over Punjab, East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya.

♦ Fog observed at 0830 hours IST of today: Very dense fog in some pockets over Punjab and in isolated pockets over northwest Rajasthan, northeast Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra and Tamilnadu; Dense fog in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East Rajasthan, Bihar and Manipur; Moderate fog in isolated pockets over Uttar Pradesh, Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh and northwest Madhya Pradesh.

♦ Visibility recorded at 0830 hours IST of today (200 m or less): Ludhiana, Patiala, Churu, Sidhi, Mahabaleshwar, Udhagamandalam-25 each; Pantnagar, Bhiwani, Narnaul, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jaipur, Kota, Chandigarh, Sagar, Khajuraho, Gaya, Imphal-50 each; Bhagalpur, Bahraich, Jammu, Sundernagar, Delhi (Palam, Ridge & Ayanagar), Datia, Guna, Jhansi, Damoh-200 each.

♦ Maximum Temperature Departures as on 28-12-2019: Maximum temperatures were above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Konkan & Goa; at many places over Jammu & Kashmir and South interior Karnataka; at a few places over Himachal Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep; and at isolated places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Tamilnadu & Puducherry and Karaikal, Assam & Meghalaya and Uttarakhand. They were markedly below normal (-5.1°C or less) at most places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at many places over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, West Bengal & Sikkim and Odisha; at a few places over Gujarat region; and at isolated places over Chhattisgarh and West Rajasthan; Below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over East Rajasthan; at many places over Saurashtra & Kutch and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura; at a few places over Assam & Meghalaya and Telangana; and at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 37.6°C was recorded at Mangalore (Coastal Karnataka).

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures as on 29-12-2019: Minimum temperatures are markedly above normal (5.1°C or more) at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at isolated places over Kerala & Mahe; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Lakshadweep and Coastal & North Interior Karnataka; at a few places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Rayalaseema; at isolated places over Saurashtra & Kutch, South Interior Karnataka and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal. They are markedly below normal (-5.1°C or less) at many places over East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha; at isolated places over West Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan and Odisha; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at many places over Jammu & Kashmir, West Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand; at a few places over Bihar and Chhattisgarh; at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh; at isolated places over Gujarat region, Telangana and Assam & Meghalaya and near normal over rest parts of the country. Meteorological Analysis (Based on 1430 hours IST)

♦ The fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayan region from 30th December night onwards.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Central Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The trough in easterlies from Maldives area to Lakshadweep area at 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood between 1.5 & 2.1 km above mean sea level persists.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 03rd January, 2020

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ Fall in Minimum temperatures by 4-6°C over parts of Odisha during next 2-3 days. No significant change in minimum temperatures over the rest of the country during next 2-3 days.
