PETROLEUM CLUB HOUSTONOF

Val Britton, a celebrated artist from San Francisco, is the creator of the eye-catching piece in the elevator lobby. Val’s works draw on the language of maps to connect to her father, a long-haul cross-country truck driver, who died when Val was young. She believes that mapping serves as a metaphor for searching the unknown in wide-open spaces and a trace of how we see where we’ve been. Our fascinating piece is a collage of paper shapes that hovers between two and three dimensions. It references landforms of the Gulf Coast area of Texas and Louisiana. Welcome To The New

Petroleum Club!

2 April/May 2015 • Petroleum Club of Houston

What an extraordinary year. When you go through any challenge you really do find out, not only what your reactions become to difficulty, but also, what the character is of those who surround you. Many are of the highest integrity and did not succumb to the enormous pressure of building our great Club. The best part is that through this challenge, I know who I can count on and I am proud to call this fine group of people my friends. Thank you Fort Flowers, Michael Leonard, Ron Neal, Nell St.

Cyr and Richard Tauber, Howard Tellepsen, Judy Seré and the Board Directors. You may have heard the term “Dream Team.” Their sheer willfulness, skill and expertise forged the way to have our beautiful new club completed on time and within budget. I thank all of the contributors to the Capital Campaign. Because of this monumental effort we have raised $4.6M in pledges and the assessment fee is minimal. Yes, loyalty has a small price but look around your magnificent Club. It is worth it and think of the friendships, camaraderie, business networking and family bonding that make this Club so special. Those who support the new Club are most special and are appreciated.

We have had some reality checks. We knew that parking was going to be higher, as we moved to the center of down-town. When we moved in, the projected loss for valet parking for one year was $289,000. By raising the price to $15 per car, the loss will only be $148,000, which is consistent with every previous year the Club was at the old location. Yes, valet parking is a member benefit that we underwrite every year. We can absorb the latter loss; however, with the move, the best leadership is to not incur unbudgeted losses.

I thank you for the opportunity to be your President. We have had to make a lot of tough decisions; but, the journey was remarkable and extraordinary only because all of you stayed the course, too. God bless and know that Allison and I truly look forward to seeing you in the new Club soon.

Sincerely,

Thomas K. EdwardsPresident

Mystery California Wine DinnerFriday, May 15, 2015 • 7:00 p.m.

From the redwood forests of Northern California to the rolling hills of Hollywood, from sunny San Diego to foggy San Francisco, few states can boast the diversity of culture and climate like California. That diversity can also be found in the wines of state, which have become world-renowned in the 30 years since the “Judgment of Paris.” With the Mystery California dinner, the Wine Committee takes you to some of these diverse locations to sample the wonderful wines of California. Chef Manuel has prepared a remarkable dinner which would be worth the price of admission all by itself. When paired with the wines, however, the dinner becomes one for the ages. I look forward to seeing you there!
