Page 2: Sun & Moon Yoga Studio Newsletter Summer 2014

I am not a yoga teacher.

This may sound strange, since I have taught yoga to many of you over the years. What I mean is that I

don’t wear the label of "yoga teacher" as the sole definition of who I really am. Some day in the future, this will serve me well.

Because our minds are conditioned to be outwardly oriented, we default to a self-definition in terms of

career title, material possession, social status, physical description, or belief system. "I am a mother," and "I am the manager" are common examples. So are "I am tall," and "I am old," and "I am American." It's true

that we require this definitive and separate sense of self in order to function as individuals. This knowledge makes us capable of arranging our thoughts and behaving appropriately in agreed-upon roles. Yes, it's necessary to possess this "ego" or sense of self. However, to over-identify with and attach ourselves to these

labels puts us on shaky ground.

The yoga sutras refer to this “false identification” or “ego” as asmita, and pinpoint it as one of five basic

causes of suffering. Even when we have positive associations with our definitions of self, they are exactly the same ones that ultimately make us vulnerable and insecure. In fact, it's especially when we like what we currently "are," that we're bound for trouble, because these things are guaranteed to change. Every

time we self-categorize or self-define, we are referring to the outward, material, and temporary aspect of being. The focus becomes what we do or what others can see, but only for the time being. We forget that

we are also, and always, universal.

Enjoying the transitory aspects of life is part of its beauty and richness. These aspects of your “self” are an important part of who you are. They're just not all that you are. If you can recognize that there is

something deeper within you that is unchanging, and that this changeless reality is, in fact, your true and authentic “self," you

are less likely to be bothered by changes beyond your control. Grieving over these changes is healthy, but even better is to layer the grief with understanding that none of it affects who

you are at your core.

The philosophical underpinnings of yoga point to self-

understanding, wisdom and contentment as the keys to a peaceful life. We learn that the more connected we are with the unchanging self, the less we suffer from the inevitable

changes all around us. One of modern science's greatest sages said pretty much the same thing. From Albert Einstein, “a

human being...experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of

his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to

affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison..."

One day, I will no longer teach yoga, for some reason yet to be known. When that day comes, I hope I'll

have the presence of mind to know that, while it lasted, it was meaningful and enriching, and without it, I will continue to be exactly the same inner, conscious, connected being that I always was.

All make-ups must be taken during the quarter for which you are registered; they may not be carried over to the next quarter.

REFUND AND CREDIT POLICYKeeping in mind our liberal make-up policy, we understand that life circumstances sometimes get in the way, and yoga has to wait. If you decide you must ask for a credit or a refund, they are available for the number of classes remaining in the quarter, based on the date we receive your request (not the date you last attended). Therefore, please fill out a refund/credit request form as soon as you know you can no longer attend your classes. Refunds will incur the following administrative fees: $20 for classes or 10% the cost of a workshop. Refunds by check may take up to 3 weeks to process; refunds by credit card may take up to one week. Letters of Credit are valid for one year from the date issued, and incur no administrative fee. Letters of Credit apply to classes and workshops only, and cannot be redeemed for cash or merchandise. Workshop refunds or letters of credit are available up to the day before the event. We practice barefoot and keep our floors clean; leave your shoes in the cubbies before entering the yoga rooms. We have men’s and women’s changing areas. No heavy perfume/cologne or noisy jewelry. For your safety, leave valuables locked and hidden in your car. Cell phones must be silenced; for the benefit of all, we strongly discourage cell phones in the yoga room. Sun & Moon Yoga Studio, Ltd. reserves the right to dismiss (with or without a refund) any student who disrupts the harmony of the class or studio.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGSClasses cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergency will not be re-scheduled, but may be made up in any other class during the quarter. During severe weather conditions or other emergencies, we will post all cancellations on the studio website and on the outgoing voicemail at 703.525.9642.

Arlington Studio

Barbara teaches primarily in the Boston area, and we invite her to our studio every year for

good reason! Her influence on many of your favorite Sun & Moon teachers is clear and

compelling – her slow paced teaching is down-to-earth, grounded in intelligent technique,

and informed by insights plumbed from the depths of the inner body. These are skills she’s

honed for over 40 years of teaching and practice.

Be Inspired by the Masters This Fall

A workshop with a master teacher is a gourmet meal of a class. We host the best master

“chefs” of yoga from all over the country, and revel in the taste of their expertise. They offer

different flavors, pairings of wisdom, asana, anatomy, and life experience in deeply

meaningful and valuable ways. We treasure our relationships with these teachers, and are

proud to share them with our community. See our website for more prices and more details.
