2017 New Mexico beach volleyball • 1 2017 SCHEDULE Lobos heads to tempe for sun devil challenge New Mexico beach volleyball team is heading back to Arizona as it plays three matches against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Arizona and host Arizona State as part of the Sun Devil Challenge. After starting their 2017 campaign with a solid performance in Phoenix, the Lobos (2-3) are taking to Tempe as they face off against the Javelinas (4-1) on Saturday and the No. 9/12 Sun Devils (2-1) and the No. 13/8 Wildcats (1-2) on Sunday at the PERA Club. As it was last week — and as it will be virtually every week this season — the Lobos will get to contend with some nationally ranked teams. The Sun Devils, hot off a win over the Wildcats, are ranked ninth in the DiG Magazine Poll and 12th in the AVCA Poll, while Arizona is 13th and eighth, respectively. New Mexico is receiving votes in both polls, and will look to take advantage of its competition this weekend to move up in the rankings. Last season, the Lobos parlayed two wins over ASU into a spot in the polls, rising up to a program- best 12th in the DiG poll last March. However, UNM will probably look to some new pairing in its quest for improvement and wins. Although the Lobos had success last weekend with three pairs posting at least three wins, there’s room for improvement with the roster they currently have. To open the season, New Mexico’s middle pairings (Nos. 2, 3 and 4) all racked up wins, helping power the squad to wins over Benedictine and Colorado Mesa. Julia Warren & Lauren Twitty had the most success last weekend going 4-1 between the 4’s and 5’s positions. Out of the second position, Devanne Sours & Lise Rugland went 3-2, a record matched by Marisa Doran & Eastyn Baleto from the third position. Along with their top pairing of Cassie House & Ashley Kelsey — who went 2-3 with a couple of losses in exceptionally closes matches — the Lobos have some strong duos that can challenge for points against top competition. But with a number of players vying for playing time, UNM’s lineup may shift depending on matchups. Carly Beddingfield (who played in all five matches last week) and Victoria Spragg are both tall, imposing blockers, while Jackie Baro (who started four matches last week), Emily Nenninger, Lyric Ellison and Chloe Crappell can also contribute as defenders. New Mexico RECEIVING VOTES IN NATIONAL POLL The University of New Mexico beach volleyball team is receiving votes in both of the national polls as it enters the second week of the 2017 season. Unofficially, the Lobos check in at 23rd in both the DiG Magazine Beach Volleyball Poll and AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll, which were released Monday, March 6. The Lobos posted a 2-3 record to open their 2017 campaign, registering wins over Benedictine and Colorado Mesa. However, UNM fell 4-1 to Loyola Marymount (currently 20th in the DiG Magazine poll) and Grand Canyon (8th in the DiG Poll, 11th in the AVCA). The Lobos also had fell by a point to now-18th TCU. Both poll have USC (2-0) as the top-ranked team, followed by No. 2 Florida State (2-0), No. 3 Pepperdine (1-1), No. 4 UCLA (2-2) and No. 5 Hawai’i (4-0). Warren and Twitty team up for strong 2017 debut

Julia Warren is a three-year veteran of the Lobo beach volleyball team, and has had success during her first two years. In 2015, she went 8-6 with Eastyn Baleto, and last year, she finished 18-7 with Hannah Johnson. But with Baleto now tearing it up with Marisa Doran and Johnson graduated, Warren entered 2017 seeking a new partner. Enter Lauren Twitty, a high school All-American from Virginia. One week into the season, and that pairing has worked out well for the Lobos, as Twitty & Warren have combined for a 4-1 record on the year playing in both the 4’s and 5’s positions. The tandem has secured three-set wins over No. 20 Loyola Marymount and No. 15 TCU, with their only setback coming to No. 11 Grand Canyon in Phoenix.

Playing it closeAshley Kelsey & Cassie House face off against some of the toughest pairs in the nation playing out of the No. 1 position for the Lobos. And that duo has been giving the fans their money’s worth, as five of their 10 sets this season have been decided by to two points. They’ve posted three 21-19 scores, losing twice, and have gone to extra points two times this season, with a 25-23 loss to Loyola Marymount and a 22-20 setback to TCU. Last season, 13 of their 48 sets were decided by two points.

And we meet again...New Mexico is a bit of an island in the world of NCAA beach volleyball. The Lobos are the only team in the state of New Mexico to sponsor beach volleyball as an NCAA varsity sport, so with the lack of in-state competition, UNM has to find nearby neighbors for games. With multiple schools in Arizona sponsoring the sport, the Lobos can travel west for some matches, which means New Mexico has played its fair share of games against those schools. In fact, of the 45 matches ever played in UNM history, 13 have come against Arizona schools. The Lobos will get two more chances to take on schools from the Grand Canyon State this weekend as they play Arizona State and Arizona. UNM has played both schools four times each (2-2 vs. ASU, 0-4 vs. UA), which is second for the most matches played against a single school in program history. The most? Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, with five matches.

Scouting Texas A M-KingsvilleTexas A&M-Kingsville, a Division II school from Kingsville, Texas, began its inaugural season of beach volleyball with a perfect 4-0 record at the Javelina Beach Volleyball Invitational. The Javelinas defeated Stevenson University twice, and added wins over Principia College and Missouri Baptist University. However, in Texas A&M-Kingsville’s first taste of Division I competition, the Javelinas fell 5-0 to Grand Canyon on Wednesday. TAMUK will also continue is DI tour this weekend vs. ASU, UA and UNM. The Javelinas, coached by Tanya Allen, dropped just four sets during their season-opening weekend, and all five of their starting pairs have one loss or fewer. Lexi Wick & Kyra Henderson are 3-1 for Texas A&M-Kingsville in the No. 1 position, while Gabby Atchley & Kelby Sprinkles are 3-1 in No. 2 and Kat Evans & Kadi Shipman are 3-1 in No. 3. Out of the 4’s spot, Haley Hutchinson & Maelee Sowa are 4-0.

Scouting ArizonaNo. 13/8 Arizona, a participant in the inaugural NCAA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships in 2016, has lost two straight. And while both of those losses were to good teams — 5-0 to Hawai’i and 3-2 to in-state rival Arizona State — it’s the first time the Wildcats have lost back-to-back matches since their first season in 2014. However, Arizona is a talented team led by sisters Madison and McKenna Witt, who posted a 26-4 record last spring. The tandem is just 1-2 this season, falling in three sets to UH and ASU. Over the last two season, the Witt twins have played just nine matches to three sets, including a win over UNM’s Ashley Kelsey & Cassie House last March. The only Arizona pairs with two wins this season are the No. 3 pair of Olivia Macdonald & Olivia Hallaran and the No. 4 pair of Hailey Devlin & Sam Manley. The Wildcats have won all four meetings against New Mexico, with a 5-0 sweep last season in 2016. UA and UNM have faced off once before in Tempe, a 4-1 Arizona win.

Scouting Arizona StateArizona State picked up one of the more impressive wins of the first weekend of the beach volleyball season with its 3-2 upset of Arizona in Tucson. The Sun Devils, under first-year head coach Brad Keenan, are 2-1 and currently ranked ninth in the DiG Magazine Poll and 12th in the AVCA Poll. The Sun Devils’ top pairing of Bianca Arellano & Whitney Follette are 2-1 and handed Arizona’s Witt twins a three-set loss in ASU’s upset of UA. Arizona State’s No. 2 tandem of Madison

207 New Mexico beach volleyball • 4

Notes and newsBerridge & Oluoma Okaro are also 2-1. ASU’s only pair to pick up a win vs. Hawai’i, 4’s Cassidy Pickrell & Katelyn Carballo, were also the only ASU pair to lose to Jacksonville. However, Arizona State does have a good deal of depth, having played three different partnerships in the 5’s position last weekend. The series between New Mexico and Arizona State is tied 2-2, with the Sun Devils winning both matchups in 2015 and the Lobos claiming two wins last season.

LOBOS FINISH 2016 WITH STRONG PRESENCE IN POLLS

The New Mexico beach volleyball team finished its second season with a strong presence in the national polls, ranking 18th in the season-ending DiG Magazine Poll and receiving votes in the final AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball poll. The Lobos, who compiled a 17-9 record on the year, unofficially finished as the 17th-ranked team in the 10-team AVCA ranking released Tuesday, May 10, and closed their second season as the youngest program ranked in the DiG Magazine poll released Thursday, May 5.Overall, New Mexico received votes in the AVCA poll in all but three releases since the start of the regular season, rising to an unofficial high of 13th twice (March 28 and April 11).The Lobos also maintained a steady presence in the DiG Magazine poll, first being ranked on March 29 and climbing to a program-best No. 12 on April 12. During the 2016 season, UNM played USC, Florida State, No. 6 Arizona and No. 10 LSU and had matches against six other teams — No. 11 Grand Canyon, No. 14 Tulane, No. 16 California, No. 20 South Carolina, (RV) TCU and (RV) Washington — that were either ranked or receiving votes in the DiG Magazine poll.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL POSTS PROGRAM-best GPA IN FALL 2016

After posting a tremendous campaign in the sand last spring, the University of New Mexico beach volleyball team posted a stellar semester in the classroom last fall. The Lobos recorded a team GPA of 3.64 for the Fall 2016 semester, the highest in the five-semester history of the program. It’s fourth semester that the team registered a mark of at least 3.4.The beach team combined with the rest of the women’s sports at UNM for a 3.55 GPA. It’s the 13th-straight semester of at least a 3.4 by the combined women’s teams, as well.

A primer on beach volleyballBeach volleyball and court volleyball share many of the same basic rules. Each side gets three hits, there’s rally scoring, and a team earns

a points when the ball hits the ground or goes out of bounds. But there are some key difference between the two sports: • Beach volleyball is a partner sport played

during the spring. Court volleyball is a six-player sport played during the fall.

• Beach volleyball plays the best of three sets, with the first two sets played to 21 points, and a tiebreaker set played to 15 points, if necessary. A set must be won by at least two points.

• Open-handed tipping is prohibited in beach volleyball and the block touch counts as one of three permitted contacts.

• Coaches may only speak or give any kind of input to their players during timeouts or between sets.

• Beach volleyball players switch sides of the court every seven points during a 21-point set and every five points during a 15-point set.

• Beach volleyball is usually contested in dual matches, where the winning team is the school that wins three of five individual matches versus its opponent. Similar in format to tennis, each of those individual matches consist of a doubles — a pair of teammates ranked by ability — that are matched against their corresponding doubles from the opposing team.

Beach Volleyball enters 2nd season as 90th NCAA

ChampionshipBefore the 2016 season, the NCAA approved beach volleyball as the 90th NCAA Championship at the 2015 NCAA Convention, which allowed the sport to advance from the emerging sports for women list to a full-fledged NCAA championship. The NCAA Beach Volleyball Committee also determined the sport will be officially referred to as “beach volleyball”. When the sport was placed on the list of emerging sports for women in 2009, it was called sand volleyball. But because the sport is known as beach volleyball at all other levels of play throughout the world, the committee made its decision to refer to the sport as beach volleyball. The second-annual NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships will take place May 5-7, 20167 at the Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shore, Alabama. The championship will have an eight-team bracket that will be played in a double-elimination format.USC won the inaugural NCAA National Championship 3-0 over Florida State. Beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport with 53 Division I colleges and universities sponsoring. NCAA rules require 40 sponsoring schools to request an NCAA championship. Data shows that on average, 60 percent of participants at a sponsoring school participate only in beach volleyball instead of playing both beach and indoor volleyball.
