On Becoming a Foster Grandparent by Vicki Stones [email protected]

Who are Foster Grandparents? Members and Non-members of Fairlington UMC who have a desire to build a “grandparent” relationship with a student at FUMC. Grandparents are models, mentors and memory-makers! In society today our Grandparents are not al-ways close by, so this is an opportunity to have a unique connection to a stu-dent and to share your gifts, talents, pearls of wisdom and in return gain so much more!

What are the expectations of a Foster Grandparent?

• Attend planned socials as much as possible with your student.

• Attend your student’s concerts, plays, games and any other opportunity you might find.

• Send cards for birthdays and special milestone events.

• Agree to have a current background check every three years.

What is the time commitment? We will organize a fall event, a Christmas/Winter event and a spring social for the larger group. You should plan to spend a few hours each month attending special events such as games, plays, events that your student is involved in in school, church or community.

How will students be matched with Foster Grandparents? Students entering 6

th grade will be given the opportunity to connect with a Fos-

ter Grandparent. Christian White will help with making the connections so that we have something in common. If you would like to hear more about the Foster Grandparent program, please join us on September 8 from 5-7pm for an info meeting and dinner. Photo: 2004 Foster Grandparent Tea

Preschool News by Carol Keller, Director

[email protected]

September is right around the corner! The summer has flown by and while the school has been quiet, work is still being done. This summer, the walls have been painted and a new floor has been laid in the Orange room. Thank you to the Fairlington Trustees and all volunteers for the work involved. It is important that the children have a clean and safe environment to work in! New picnic tables for adults and children have been ordered for the playground. Did you know that Fairlington Pre-school is an outreach of the church? We serve children ages 2- 5 in 10 classes. About 25% of the children attending Fairlington Preschool have an identified special learning need or disability. There are 18 teachers, an Occupational Therapist and Speech – Language Pathologist, as well as an office assistant and Preschool Director who work each day with the 110 children enrolled. We welcome you to visit any time you are in the building to see what we do every day. The preschool asks for the congre-gation’s help in registering Harris Teeter VIC cards with the Together in Education Program. The pre-school receives a donation based on the amount spent in their stores. The TIE number of the preschool is 5236. This is the only fundraiser the pre-school does during the school year. The funds raised from this go to-wards underwriting therapy costs for the families whose children benefit from the Speech and Language as well as Occupational Therapy deliv-ered by licensed therapists on the Preschool staff. Safeway and Giant have both discontinued their pro-grams. As always, the families and staff of Fairlington Preschool thanks the con-gregation of Fairlington United Meth-odist Church for the ongoing support of the preschool.

Stan Beall is Retiring!

After many years serving as lead usher at the 9:30am service, Stan Beall is retiring. His last Sunday as an usher was July 28

th. Stan has decided that he

wants to devote more time to taking care of his wife, Rob-erta. Stan shared that for him, the best part of being an usher was getting to meet peo-ple. Thank you, Stan, for being such a welcoming presence for so many years! We will miss you!

Support our local refugee families & donate new, full size toiletries and cleaning supplies. Look for collection boxes in the church entrance.

August 2019

Fairlington United Methodist Women: Truth from the Ground Up United Methodist Women have a long tradition of studying the living contexts of women we do not know. We learn how, in times of desperate need, oppressed women cry out to God for survival. This month we will study both Hagar, the mother of Ishmael, and the unnamed slave girl in Naaman’s household, and how God hears their pleas. Through fellowship activ-ities, we will learn about Philomena Lee, Ida B. Wells, and Sandra Day O’Connor, each of whom have impacted our lives. Join us! Karlene Masters President, Fairlington UMW
