bbyy LLeeiigghh WWrriigghhttDr. Robert H. McGaughey III tried to tell the caller

that he had not nominated anyone for the KentuckyJournalism Hall of Fame this year.

The caller, Duane Bonifer, president of the Universityof Kentucky Journalism Alumni Association, then said,“No, I’m talking about you.”

McGaughey, perhaps best known for his quick wit andway with words, couldn’t quite find any words. “I wassurprised,” he recalled.

McGaughey, professor emeritus and retired chairmanof the MSU Department of Journalism and Mass Com-munications, was inducted into the Kentucky Journal-ism Hall of Fame in April.

McGaughey was one of six selected for the 2012 class.Others were Albert Ben Chandler Jr., publisher of theWoodford Sun; D.J. Everett III, owner of Ham Broad-casting with radio stations in Cadiz and Hopkinsville;Chip Hutcheson, publisher of the Princeton Times-Lead-er; Bill Luster, retired photojournalist with theLouisville Courier-Journal, and Michael York, formerreporter with the Lexington Herald and The Washing-ton Post.

“Usually the people in there are career journalists, and usually they are from Louisville and Lexington,”McGaughey said. “It meant a lot.”

In the past few years, McGaughey has watched as for-mer students such as Bill Bartleman, a retired politicalreporter at The Paducah Sun, and Jackie Hays Bickel, aretired anchor for WAVE-TV in Louisville, earned spotsin the Hall of Fame. He never imagined that his namewould be placed on a plaque and presented during a lun-cheon at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington.

The luncheon induction ceremony was sponsored bythe University of Kentucky School of Journalism andTelecommunications Alumni Association.

Former students are not surprised by McGaughey’sselection. His encouragement and mentorship lastedbeyond their four years of college, and in many cases, they still talk to McGaughey, fondly known as Doc, on aregular basis.

Rae Charlton Wagoner, gen-eral manager of the EddyvilleHerald-Ledger, met Doc atfreshman orientation. Alwaysthe recruiter, Doc offered her asmall scholarship if she wouldconsider working for either TheMurray State News or TheShield. Her News experienceplanted the seed that wouldbecome her career.

“Later, though he was nevermy assigned adviser, he doledout wisdom and honest factsabout the news business,” Wag-oner said. “He never sugar-coated the truth, and he wasright. There’s nothing like thenews business.”

Former students may bestremember McGaughey’s larger-than-life humor and wit fromJMC 168, the introduction classin the journalism department. He often paired with BobValentine, senior lecturer, todemonstrate communicationtechniques and problems. TabBrockman, parks director forthe City of Murray, called it theDoc and Doc show.

“When Trey (McGaughey) and V challenged each otherin the Intro to Journalism class, it stunned the wholeclass, until we realized it was a setup,” Brockman said.

McGaughey recited the content of the class, rangingfrom history to language, touching upon the various dis-ciplines of mass communications.

“The intro class can be boring,” McGaughey said. “Mytheory was that kids had an attention span of seven toeight minutes.”

Rather than lecturing straight through about history,McGaughey interjected jokes to get the students’ atten-tion and cause them to learn without realizing howmuch they actually learned.

“His humor and expertise made him truly one of akind,” said Stephanie Elder, area director of the Ameri-can Cancer Society in Paducah. “I am not at all sur-prised at his induction. He has accomplished far morethan others even aspire to in their career.”

Venita Fritz, general manager of the Tribune-Courierin Benton, said Doc’s class mixed knowledge and enter-tainment. “You could always count on him meanderingoff topic to a place that was just as educational as thesubject itself,” Fritz said.

And even though McGaughey seemed like a jokester,he wanted students to reach their potential. Elder saidDoc pushed her to work hard and find her way in jour-nalism, which included stints as a television producerbefore going into public relations and part-time teach-ing. “He wanted me to succeed and was willing to go toany length to ensure my success,” Elder said.

McGaughey’s relationship with students didn’t endwhen they walked across the stage, whether it was atLovett Auditorium, the old Racer Arena or the CFSB Cen-ter. He often visited newsrooms, advertising agencies orPR offices across the state to check on students and pitchcurrent students’ resumes to potential employers.

bbyy LLeeiigghh WWrriigghhttDr. Ann Landini didn’t plan

on becoming a teacher. Her father had taught sci-

ence and coached football atGrove High School in Paris,Tenn., in the 1930s, but shedidn’t want to follow his careerpath. Yet, when she movedfrom Lexington, Ky., back toher parents’ farm in Paris,Tenn., teaching suddenlybecame an option for a youngwoman with an infant daugh-ter. Landini completed her cer-tification at the University ofTennessee-Martin and beganteaching full time at HenryCounty (Tenn.) High School.Landini established the news-paper at Henry County Highand served as adviser to thenewspaper and yearbook. Shealso taught newswriting as anadjunct professor at MurrayState.

In 1982, Landini left highschool teaching to pursue adoctorate while teaching jour-nalism full time at the Univer-sity of Tennessee. Shereturned to Murray State in1985 as adviser to The MurrayState News and journalisminstructor. Thirty-nine yearsafter stepping into that firstclassroom at Henry County,Landini, associate professor ofjournalism and mass commu-nications, retired on June 30from Murray State University.

Had Landini not turnedaway from the newspaperlifestyle for teaching, studentslike Chris Evans might havechosen a different career.Evans, publisher of the Crit-tenden Press, first met Landi-ni when he took a journalismclass at Henry County in the1980s. “Had it not been for Dr.Landini’s influence, herencouragement and instruc-tion, I certainly would nothave become a journalist,”Evans said. “I am very thank-ful she sent me on this careerpath. It has been personallyrewarding.”

Kevin Patton, sports writerat The Henderson Gleaner, remembers when he walkedinto the double glass doors atThe Murray State News as asports-crazed teenager whowanted to use journalism as ameans to combine his obses-sion with a career. “I remem-ber how intimidated I was atfirst, even by the simplestinterviews with the volleyballcoach or the golf coach,” Pattonsaid. “Her encouragement

helped my confidence growwhether I was covering Mur-ray State basketball, theBoard of Regents or the firingof the University president.Thinking back, it’s amazinghow much I grew as a personand as a journalist in my fouryears at Murray State and Dr.Landini had a big part of that.”

Patton said Landini wantedstudents to work together atThe Murray State News, a skillthat he said served him well asa professional. “She had a giftfor encouraging each of us to doour best and she also expectedthe best out of us.”

Some students regardedLandini as one of the tougherteachers in the journalismdepartment, much like the edi-tors they would face in theircareers. Holly Wise, city editorof the Killeen (Texas) DailyHerald, recalled how Landinichallenged her in the class-room. “She was, in essence, myfirst hard editor,” Wise said.“You know, the one who paystoo much attention to you andmakes you wonder if you havewhat it takes. And the one whomatters the most when theygive you their stamp ofapproval.”

Landini said she set herstandards high in hopes thather students would rise orexceed those standards. Herred pen often worked overtimeon student papers and herweekly critiques of The Mur-ray State News. A misspelledword, an improper usage of aword or a mistake of Associat-ed Press style received marksand notes. She crafted notes inthe margins of The News, ask-ing her student writers andeditors why they didn’t seekanother source or challenge aUniversity official with a hard-er question. Her critiques wereboth loved and loathed onMonday afternoons during theeditorial board meetings.

Wise, who took Landini’scopyediting class, said shewould challenge any reporterin any newsroom to a duel offinding entries in the AP Style-book. “I think we did thatevery day, and now, as an edi-tor, those are skills I can’t livewithout,” Wise said. “Even inthe age of the AP Stylebookonline, I prefer to flip throughthe familiar pages of my boundcopy.”

Evans worked hard as ahigh schooler on The FirstAmendment, the Henry Coun-

ty paper, because he wantedher approval of his work andthe newspaper. “Of course, shealso taught us the invertedpyramid, editing marks andthe difference between its andit’s,” Evans said. “Those funda-mental tools and the intangi-bles she taught us about, haveserved me and many otherswell as we practice this craftamid great public scrutiny.”

But beyond the Stylebookquizzes, lectures about commasplices and improper usage ofpronouns, Landini wanted herstudents to leave Murray Statewith more than a journalismdegree. She wanted them to beable to survive and thrive inthe competitive media busi-ness.

“She was among the first toteach me about character, responsibility, credibility anddeadlines,” Evans said. “Shetaught me that credibility inthe newspaper business issomething that is achieved andthat it must be refined daily orelse it can be lost in a flash.”

Landini served as adviser toThe Murray State News from1985 to 1995. Under her guid-ance, the newspaper wonnumerous awards.

Landini also served as co-adviser of The Shield yearbookfrom 1997-2002 and adviserfrom 2002-2008.

She also served as director ofthe West Kentucky Press Asso-ciation and executive secretaryof the Kentucky IntercollegiatePress Association.

She served as sequence headof the journalism major formany years.

Besides service in the JMCdepartment, Landini wasactive in the Faculty Senateand served as president fromMay 1997-April 1999. She alsoserved as head of Hart Collegefor seven years, chair of theCouncil of College Heads forthree years, faculty adviser forLambda Chi Alpha for fouryears and numerous Universi-ty committees within the Stu-dent Affairs division.

A scholarship has beenestablished in her honor. TheDr. Ann Lackey Landini Jour-nalism Scholarship will beawarded to journalism stu-dents who have attainedsophomore status or above andare either active at The Mur-ray State News or in the resi-dential college system. Recipi-ents must have a minimum 3.0GPA.

Landini concludes media career

Greg Stark and Brandi Williams show Dr. Ann Landini some of theirwork during their summer 2000 internship with the Benton Tribune-Courier. Landini directed the department’s internship program for sever-al years.

A scholarship has been established in honor of Dr. Ann Landini. StephenCrouch, director of development for the Arthur J Bauernfeind College ofBusiness, announces the scholarship at Landini’s retirement reception onMay 2. The reception was held in The Murray State News’ newsroom.

He led the company’s growthover the past 10 years from adrawing-room concept to anestablished, full-service agency.

Prior to Fathom, he served asaccount director of the Exxon-Mobil business at DDB World-wide. He began his career in1991 at Ogilvy & Mather whenhe joined the agency as a junioraccount executive on the PostCereals account.

He received three promotionsin less than five years. In addi-tion to managing accounts thatincluded General Foods andJaguar cars, he was given theadded responsibility of directingOgilvy’s renowned training pro-gram for young account execu-tives.

Groome joined DDB World-wide in 1998 as account director

for Mobil Oil business, one of theagency’s oldest and most valuedaccounts. He helped DDB winthe Rolls-Royce and BentleyMotor Cars accounts.

Tim Love, vice chairman ofthe Omnicon Group, Inc., dis-cussed innovations in interna-tional marketing and advertis-ing March 29.

During his 39-year career,Love has worked in severalcountries and been responsiblefor clients such as Nissan MotorCompany and Proctor & Gam-ble.

He serves on several advisorycommittees including the Adver-tising Council, the AmericanAdvertising Federation and theOrganization of Women in Inter-national Trade.

Love’s first assignment uponentering the advertising fieldwas for the Ad Council’s cam-paign for the Peace Corps.

Simon Bond, chief marketingofficer for BBDO & ProximityWorldwide, came to campusApril 5.

He has worked for BBDO formore than 13 years and hashelped establish its digital oper-ations in Europe, Middle East &North Africa, Asia Pacific andnow North America.

Bond spent the first 10 yearswith BBDO between London,Paris, Dubai, Singapore and

Japan. He is now based in NewYork, responsible for drivinginnovation and business devel-opment across BBDO’s giantinternational client base.

He has been heavily engagedin building global brands likeP&G, J&J, PepsiCo, Campbell’s

and Mars.The three speakers presenta-

tions were arranged by RobertNorsworthy, executive vice pres-ident of Diversified Agency Ser-vices, a division of OmniconGroup, Inc.

This spring semester Norswor-

thy has been a professional-in-residence for the JMC Depart-ment and worked with advertis-ing and public relations classes. He has also worked to secureinternships for a number of stu-dents in the department.

Ad executives share experiences with students

Tim Love, left, vice chairman of Omnicom Group Inc. and CEO of Omnicom Asia Pacific, India, MiddleEast, Africa, visited campus March 29. He presented a lecture “Think Like the Sun: The Secret toBuilding Global Brands” and met with students while on campus. Appearing with Love are, from left,Dr. Randy Dunn, MSU president, Dr. Bob Lochte, chair of the Department of Journalism and MassCommunications, Robert Norsworthy, executive vice president of Diversified Agency Services and pro-fessional-in-residence, and Gill Welsch, head of the advertising major.

Chris Lovorn, sales director at Quad/Graphics, speaks to Graphic Communications Man-agement students as part of the department’s annual Gravure Day. In addition to Lovorn,GCM students learned from Jim Sheibley, general manager of New Page Specialty Papersand GAA, and Judy Jones, manufacturing manager at RR Donnelley.

Phil Jones, an alumnus of MurrayState University and the art director atthe advertising agency CarmichaelLynch, has had 23 of his designs print-ed by Threadless, an online communitydesign company. Recently, his T-shirtdesign “I Hate Negative Statements”was chosen to be used in the first Gap+ Threadless collection and is availableat select retail stores.

Jones graduated in May 2005 with abachelor of science in advertising and aminor in graphic design. In the sum-mer of 2011, Jones submitted hisdesign “I Hate Negative Statements”on the Threadless website and wasinformed that his design had beenselected for the Gap + Threadless col-lection.

Released on Feb. 27, the collectionincludes 16 men’s and 10 women’s stylesthat are sold in limited Gap stores inthe United States and Canada, and onGap’s website. The collaborationbetween Gap and Threadless inspiresartists to create exciting artwork thepublic can relate to and initiate opportu-nities for their designs to be printed inretail stores throughout the U.S.

“Threadless t-shirts are really allabout the designs. All of Threadless’designs are voted upon by the commu-nity, creating a deeper connection notonly to the t-shirt designs but theThreadless brand,” Jones said.

“Since I try to have a positive atti-tude with every endeavor, I thoughtthe irony of the phrase ‘I Hate Nega-tive Statements’ would make other peo-ple laugh and inspire them to have anoptimistic perspective about life,” Jonesexplained.

Jones has been engaged withThreadless since August 2007 andremains active by submitting designs. In 2010, he was awarded Designer ofthe Year and continues to impact theartist community by voting for otherartists’ designs.

The voting process includes having aFacebook account or creating a freeaccount on the Threadless website.Since Threadless is open to the commu-nity, everyone is eligible to submittheir artwork and to vote on theirfavorite designs.

Leigh L. Wright, assistant professor inthe JMC department, recently attendedPoynter’s Teachaplooza in St. Petersburg,Fla.

Wright was one of 63 journalism educa-tors selected for the three-day seminar atthe Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

Participants learned how to teach withthe latest tools in social media, multime-dia, graphics, mobile reporting and tabletstorytelling. They also exchanged ideasabout training journalists for the multi-media age while also providing the tradi-tional skills of writing and storytelling.

Seminar speakers included Al Tomp-kins, senior faculty member who attend-ed Murray State University for threesemesters and worked at WPSD-TV; RoyPeter Clark, writing coach at Poynter;Mark Briggs, director of digital media atKING-5 TV in Seattle; and ReginaMcCombs, a faculty member at Poynter.

The seminar allowed professors to testnew technology and discuss how to incor-porate it into their classes. Wright saysshe plans to use more social and multi-media techniques in her writing and

reporting classes.“When I left the professional news

business three years ago, we barely usedsocial media and multimedia for report-ing and writing our stories,” Wright said.“However, the media business nowexpects our students to be able to usesocial media for reporting and editing.Editors and station managers also expectour graduates to be able to write, shootand edit stories for multiple platforms.”

Wright participated in a two-day semi-nar, “Hands-On Video,” after Teacha-palooza. Participants shot, wrote andedited packages for television, usingFinal Cut Pro and Premiere video editingprograms.

Prior to joining the Murray State facul-ty last year, Wright had worked as areporter and section editor for The Padu-cah Sun for 16 years. She continues tofreelance for several regional magazines.
