Art Lesson Creating Collage with Print
To begin: Wherever you are now, stop and look up. Focus on the shapes and outlines of objects around you.
Are they straight or curved? Is the outline smooth or bumpy? Is this object symmetrical?
Next, look at different colours of these objects. Can you see things that are one block colour? Has any object got different shades of the same colour? Can you spot objects with many different colours throughout?
Have a look around your house for old magazines, newspapers, toy catalogues – anything with print and colour.
You will need:
Old magazines, newspapers, catalogues, coloured paper (you can also paint or colour in paper yourself) White A4 paper Glue stick or PVA Glue
Option 1:
1. Choose an object in your environment you would like to collage. Examine its shape and colours.
2. Look through your magazines, newspapers, catalogues etc. and tear out pictures that have the colours you need. Tear these pictures into smaller pieces, different shapes and sizes will work well.
3. If you would like to include a background, choose plain newsprint and tear this up too.4. On your A4 paper, draw the outline of your object.
5. Using your glue, stick on the coloured paper pieces. Pay attention to different tones and shades of your object. Try to represent these with your paper pieces. Add the background if you wish.
Option 2:
1. Choose an animal you would like to collage. Research pictures of the animal and decide if you want to collage the whole animal or just its face. Examine the shapes of different parts of the animal’s face or body. Pay attention to the colours you see and the shades of these colours.
2. Look through your magazines, newspapers, catalogues etc. and tear out pictures that have the colours you need. Tear these pictures into smaller pieces, different shapes and sizes will work well.
3. If you would like to include a background, you can choose plain newsprint or one block colour. Find it and tear it up too.
4. On your A4 paper, draw the outline of your object first. Then add the detail for different parts of the face or body.
5. Using your glue, stick on the coloured paper pieces. Pay attention to different tones and shades of your animal. Try to represent these with your paper pieces.
6. Add the background if you wish.
Optional Extension Activity – Collage with a Tonal Background
1. Starting at the centre of the page, colour the background. Paint or watercolours will work particularly well here.
Think of the tones you are using here. You might start in a light shade that gets deeper as you work your way out or vice
versa. You might use two complimentary shades or two shades that will contrast with
each other. 2. Draw the outline of your object on top of the background colour. 3. Follow the steps above to create your collage using only torn newsprint.
