Perfectl y preserved under lay-ers of sheep dung (who needs cedar closets?), the shoe, made of cowhide and tanned with oil from a plant or vege-table, is about 5,500 years old, older than Stone-henge and the Egyptian pyramids, sci-entists say.

Leather laces crisscross through numerous leather eye-lets, and it was worn on the right foot; there is no word on the left shoe.

While the shoe more closel y re-sembles an L. L.Bean-type soft-soled walking shoe than anything by Jimmy Choo, “these were prob-abl y quite expensive shoes, made of leather, very high quality,” said one of the lead scien-tists, Gregory Areshian, of the Cotsen In-stitute of Ar-chaeology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“I THINK WE HAVE AN AMBIVALENT

RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS

ELEMENT IN FASHION. ON THE ONE HAND, THERE’S SOMETHING REALLY HORRIBLE ABOUT THIS

TENSION OF HAVING TO DO SOMETHING, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND THERE’S SOMETHING VERY

STIMULATING ABOUT IT, KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE TO GO ON, YOU HAVE TO CREATE.

THERE WAS THIS AMBITION AND CONVICTION THAT WE WANTED

TO WORK AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL POSSIBLE.”

“HOLES FOR VENTILATION AND WATER DRAINAGE, AND VERY LIT-TLE BULK (A STUDY FOUND THAT RUNNERS IN LIGHTER KICKS DIDN’T TIRE AS QUICKLY).”

You may underpronate (land on the outside of your feet), which can cause too much shock to travel up your legs. Look for a neutral or

cushioned shoe.

You probably have few foot or pronation problems. A neutral shoe is your best bet.

You likely overpronate (your feet turn inward too much). Try neutral or stability shoes.

PETER GRAY HIGH HAIR ARTSupport usually translates to added bulk. Not with this pair. Innovative lightweight

materials keep your feet steady but not heavy.
