LokrumThe eternally green islet of romantic beauty, positioned right off the coast ofDubrovnik is a true oasis of peace, and one of the most attractive excursion sightsfor residents of Dubrovnik and its visitors. With its maintained bathing sites andbays, view of the sunny open sea, extensive pine woods, lush subtropicalvegetation, and with its old Benedictine monastery and walking trails along theshaded alleys, the islet gives an unforgettable impression.In the bosom of the fragrant park is the former Benedictine monastery (from the12th century), closed down during Napoleon's occupation. Later, the monasteryand the islet as a whole came into possession of the Habsburg ArchdukeMaximilian and became his summer residence in 1859. Maximilian renovated themonastery in the neo-Gothic style and built a castle in the shape of a tower.Following Maximilian's tragic death in Mexico, the islet changed hands severaltimes, and today is a protected nature park.
