Summer School on Towards a Green Habitat

Based on Laurie Baker’s Philosophy and Approach Aims and Objectives: The objective of the summer school is to create awareness on the need to move towards a Green Habitat based on cost-effective building design and construction technology that is, at the same time, environmentally sustainable. Target Group:

To realize this objective, the LBC proposes to conduct a summer school for young architects, civil engineers and senior students of architecture, planning, civil engineering, urban and rural studies interested in green habitat. We would also welcome interested researchers and students from the social sciences especially those interested in the area of environment and development in general and socio-economic planning for housing, water and sanitation, and waste management in particular. Duration: The Summer School will be for a period of two weeks. Dates: 19th May 2014 – 1st June 2014(both days inclusive) Venue: The main venue for the Summer School will be the Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies, Thiruvananthapuram (also known as Trivandrum) in Kerala. Boarding and Lodging: Boarding and Lodging will be provided in the LBC Campus. During field visits food will be arranged by the LBC. Curriculum The curriculum will consist of a combination of (i) interactive sessions, (ii) hands-on experience, (iii) practical assignments, (iv) field visits, (v) audio-visual sessions, and (vi) feed-back sessions. In terms of subjects, the curriculum will cover topics under (i) Green Economy and Green Habitat, (ii) Laurie Baker’s philosophy and approach to architecture and building construction, (iii) Green Economy with special emphasis on alternative construction techniques and materials, non-conventional energy resources, waste management and recycling, (iv) traditional architecture and the need for innovation, and (v) Social engineering such as role of women’s organizations, people’s movements and decentralized planning. The hands-on experience will be in such areas as (i) new techniques and forms in masonry using mud, brick and rubbles, (ii) use of bamboo as an alternative construction material including for concreting, (ii) landscaping.

Field visits will consist of visits to urban housing colonies, institutions and selected buildings constructed by Laurie Baker and COSTFORD. Practical assignments will be given to groups of students depending on their background and experience. Faculty A team of renowned experts and scholars drawn from such disciplinary backgrounds as environment and development, ecological sciences, architecture, civil engineering, energy, economics and other related areas. Fees The course fee is Rs.21,000/-(inclusive of 12.36% Service Tax). This will cover field visits, boarding (simple food-Veg and Non-veg), lodging(non A/C dormitory), local transport (non A/C) and special events.

An advance registration fee of Rs.5,000/- may be paid while sending the registration form and the balance amount Rs.16,000/- be paid on arrival at the LBC campus for the Summer School. Payments will be accepted only in the form of bank drafts in favour of Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies, payable at Thiruvananthapuram.

Sight seeing Our past experience suggests that many participants are keen to visit places in Kerala during their stay. The LBC will be happy to facilitate such visits during week-ends and at the end of the Summer School for those who intend to stay for extra days. Location The LBC campus is located in the Nooliyode village in Vilappilsala Panchayat, 12 Kms away from the centre of the Thiruvananthapuam city. It is 12 kms away from the Thiruvananthapuam Central Railway Station and 18 kms from the Thiruvananthapuam International Airport. Arrival and departure Students are expected to arrive on May 18, 2014 before 8.00 PM. They are expected to depart within 24 hours of the completion of the course. Those who would like to stay for a few more days may contact the Chief Administrative and Programme Manager. Registration Interested participants are requested to fill in the attached registration form and send it to the Chief Administrative Programme Manager along with a bank draft for Rs.5,000/- being the advance registration

fee drawn in favour of Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies, payable at Thiruvananthapuram. No registration form will be accepted without the bank draft for Rs.5,000/-.

Summer dress is recommended. During site visits and hands-on training full sleeve dress, jogging shoes and cricket hat are recommended.

Laptop

Participants are advised to bring laptop as assignment/project work are given during the course period.
