PRAGUE

Being a student in Prague during summer is fun. And cheap beer is only a part of the attraction. But Prague is anything but cheap. Its up-and-coming status among the dynamic capitals of Europe means that the city is a beehive of fi rst-class culture, art, nightlife and sports. ––– And then there is the famous heritage - so everything that happens here happens against the backdrop of splendid architecture, magical panoramas, with genius loci so present that you can almost touch it. The city is bisected by the Vltava River. Nicknamed “the City of a Hundred Spires”, it’s known for its Old Town Square, the heart of its historic core, with colorful baroque buildings and gothic churches. ––– The public transport system is simply the best, and the city is relatively small and compact, so you can walk nearly everywhere! No car needed. Prague, is also very safe, as is the whole country.

ARCHIP (Architectural Institute in Prague)and C4NC (Centre for Next Crafts)

OUR SCHOOL

ARCHIP (Architectural Institute in Prague) is a progressive new school of architecture, a hybrid of global and local scales, of conceptual and technical training, and a philosophical space combining the best of the European and American tradition of architecture education.––– C4NC (Centre for Next Crafts) undertakes interdisciplinary research and development of projects with industry. We focus on the intersection of emerging technologies, design, science and practical craftsmanship. Our aim is to foster next generation of critical makers and strategic thinkers that can responsibly and successfully navigate the upcoming challenges to tomorrow’s society.

We are in DOX! And DOX is where it’s at!

OUR CAMPUS

ARCHIP resides in a building in the DOX complex in Holešovice quarter, just a quick stroll with a tram to the historical city centre. This neighbourhood is eclectic and gives off a hipster vibe near the meander of River Vltava in Prague 7 district called “Art District 7”. ––– The DOX buildings host a design shop, architecture bookstore, bistro and a café, creative space, concert hall and mainly the DOX Centre for contemporary art. This art gallery is the largest private space for contemporary art in the Czech Republic. ––– The gallery’s aim is “to create a space for research, presentation, and debate on important social issues, where visual arts, literature, performing arts, and other disciplines encourage a critical view of the so-called reality of today’s world.” ––– The Centre is an internationally recognized project that involves the reconstruction of an old factory into a now multi-functional space. There is over 3000 m2 of exhibition space, lecture halls, conference centre, theatre and even a wooden airship sitting on the DOX’s roof. The airship is a multifunctional space used mainly for poetry and literature presentations (and looks amazing on your Instagram feed ;-).

DESCRIPTIONArchitecture is closely connected to rethinking social and cultural norms. How is it possible in the fi eld of architecture to develop an unusual solution to usual situation? We will introduce ideas exceeding established outer limits of architecture, touching the fi elds of politics, society, conceptual thinking, space and working conditions. ––– During two weeks we will work with the premise of architects as organizers of knowledge, not just as designers. The goal is to achieve the open-mind state, fi nd own personal fi elds of interests and strategies of working. Participants will attempt to fi nd an interdisciplinary view and develop ideas and approaches based on site-specifi c conditions and individual basic research. ––– Project will be focused on critical and alternative thinking and non-conform solutions which have potential to support positive social changes and improve quality of life, public space and city environment.

STRUCTURE AND REQUIREMENTSFirst week will focuse on lectures and excursions connected to the topic of outer limits within the architecture. Participants will defi ne their fi elds of interests and develop ideas based on site-specifi c basic research. ––– Second week will offer diverse design approaches, participants will be encouraged to think about different strategies in the design process. We will work individually or in small groups according to requirements of participants, supporting interaction and multidisciplinarity. Beside discussion with tutors, our program will offer consultation with theoreticians and artists. Summer school ideas and projects will be exhibited on a joint one-day exhibition.

DESCRIPTIONWhen we talk about the future of our urban environment we usually talk city planning from a top-down human point of view. But already today we share our everyday environment with a manifold of subjects including machines and microorganism. — We will hold on and take a closer look at the entanglements of our presence: As research shows the consequences of an event like a fl ood will infl uence the microbial atmosphere of the city many years later by cultivating a certain biochemical composite once originated in the sea and later mutated in the urban context. On the other hand, current developments of autonomous devices hint at the potential for noise pollution, increased reliance on navigation systems and weather conditions, and urban development being affected by devices’ algorithms. Our cities are full of non-human traces and we can only speculate on the impact they will once have on our environment. — During the course we will explore and fi lm Prague and some of its specifi c sites in order to sketch future scenarios for the urban context. We will collect evidence that aids us in the process of illustrating and narrating short fi lm documentaries.

STRUCTURE AND REQUIREMENTSThe fi rst week of the program is dedicated to input sessions on storytelling, scenario building, post-anthropocentric design, hands-on workshops on fi lming and sound work for embodied/disembodied camera, video editing, toolkits for compositing and digital effects. The second week will be designated for the production of the fi nal short fi lms. — Participants will work in small groups and are matched according to their backgrounds. We aim for a multidisciplinary group of designers, artists, architects, programmers, social scientists etc. The program will be accompanied by fi eld visits and movie nights as well as a public screening of the fi nal short fi lms. — The summer school is open to undergraduate and graduate students alike. There are no pre-requirements but basic knowledge in video editing, motion graphics or animation is preferred.

DESCRIPTIONHow to design for a world where conversations and contracts happennot only between people, but also things and non-humans (plants, animals, rocks) constantly exchanging data? Your car will know where it can park, but it can also report you to the police if you break the rules. Your strawberries will discuss their pesticides content and origin with your supermarket, and your refrigerator will block your credit card in a junk food restaurant if the elevator reports that your gained weight. How to gain voice and control in such chatty & data saturated world of future automation? How to design applications that enable not only interaction, but also contracts betweenhumans, things and non-humans? ––– We will explore the emergent blockchain technologies and their convergence with IoTs by prototyping a service, smart contract or oracle based on DApp - decentralized application on the Ethereum platform or similar solutions on IOTA. We will connect an Ethereum or IOTA wallet with data from IoTs (Internet of Things and sensors) or online sources (open APIs - public application programming interfaces) and explore the differences between interaction, automation and contract.

STRUCTURE AND REQUIREMENTSWe will use an example of a smart contract with a wearable motion sensorconnected to an Ethereum account to design end of life decisions ordieting scenarios. In the fi rst week, we will introduce the blockchaintechnologies (Ethereum, IOTA), IoT prototyping boards (Particle, NodeMCU,ESPresso lite) and clouds/platforms (Smart citizen, Thingspeak) that enable design for smart contracts. ––– In the second week we will work in groups and design end of life decision contract (death switch, testament, living will, advance healthcare directive specifying actions when you die etc.) or a dieting contract (for example: automatically sending the ethers fora dinner to your partner to book your favorite restaurant if you walked the right amount of kilometres per day).
