Change is complex wherever and whenever it occurs. In many
ways it is the natural order of decline and regeneration that
as an ongoing process brings new possibilities and in other
situations it can be devastating. The subtle forces, the politics,
the morality, the emotion and the personal judgment is what
will be considered throughout the weekend.

The University of New England is well known for its
highly ranked quality of student experience; excellence
in research; strong commitment to innovation; social
inclusion; and responsiveness to the aspirations of
students, staff, partners and the New England Region.
The UNE Summer Retreat is a signature event on the UNE
calendar. The New England setting provides a chance
to experience the tangible and intangible assets of the
University and the community which forms its solid
foundation.
The inaugural event in 2014 is hosted by the UNE
Business School and will enable participants to engage
with thought leaders around the theme of: ‘A deeper
conversation about change’.
The central themes proposed for the inaugural 2014 UNE
Summer Retreat include:

Particular emphasis will be given to presenters with
expertise in generating change in a variety of settings
including regional locations. The Summer Retreat will
integrate academic and cross-disciplinary fields of
endeavour, providing insights for students, business
leaders and academics engaged in a range of business
environments and disciplines, from not for profit, for profit
and government agencies.
Overall the UNE Summer Retreat will aim to identify,
profile and inspire excellence through a series of crafted
conversations and activities.
Participants will question and explore organisational practices
and issues and be invited to imagine futures that create hope and
energy. Through dialogue and action learning the participants will
have access to business leaders and academics renowned for their
capacity to generate change.

A stimulating program of knowledge-sharing, expert seminars and active conversation on
the themes of leading change, awareness, resilience and the future.

$995 (plus gst) fee includes tuition, course materials, UNE residential accommodation and meals.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Do you work in an organisation and want to learn more about how to bring about change in a way that generates goodwill, is morally responsible, considers a long term perspective, and is a creative solution?
Your organisation may be a small or medium size business or a large organisation, for profit, not for profit or a government agency. Our participants will come from a range of sectors from financial services, agribusiness, education or health. A major strength of the Retreat is the opportunity to discuss change with others working in different discipline areas.
This may be your first time visiting UNE or you may be a postgraduate student or Alumnus of the Graduate School of Business.
The Summer Retreat will give you a unique opportunity to meet and discuss leading change from

Dr Simon Longstaff’s distinguished career
includes being named as one of AFR Boss
True Leaders for the 21st century with Carol
Schwartz noting “…I don’t know one CEO
or chairman in corporate Australia who
has not worked with Simon Longstaff…”.
Dr Longstaff has a PhD in Philosophy
from Cambridge. Prior to becoming
the inaugural Executive Director of St
James Ethics Centre in 1991, he worked
in the Northern Territory in the Safety
Department of BHP subsidiary, GEMCO,
lectured at Cambridge University
and consulted to the Cambridge
Commonwealth and Overseas Trusts.
Dr Longstaff was inaugural President
of The Australian Association for
Professional & Applied Ethics and is a
Fellow of the World Economic Forum.
He is Chairman of Woolworths Limited
Corporate Responsibility Panel, AMP
Capital Socially Responsible Investment
Advisory Committee and the International
Advisory Board of the Genographic Project.
Dr Longstaff serves on the Australian
Institute of Company Directors Corporate
Governance Committee, BHP Billiton
Forum on Corporate Responsibility, CSIRO
Niche Manufacturing Flagship Advisory
Committee and Nestle Oceania Creating
Shared Value Advisory Board.
His book Hard Cases, Tough Choices was
published in 1997.
Executive Director, Sydney Theatre
Company
Patrick McIntyre graduated from the
University of Technology Sydney with a
Bachelor of Arts (Communications). For
twenty years, he has worked extensively
across the Australian arts scene in
managerial, marketing and business
development roles.
As General Manager of Sydney Theatre
Company, he works with the Board of
directors and Artistic Directors Cate
Blanchett and Andrew Upton in leading
and developing one of the world’s
busiest theatre organisations. Prior to
joining Sydney Theatre Company, he
was Associate Executive Director of The
Australian Ballet. Other key positions
held include CEO of Sydney Film Festival
and Marketing Manager of Sydney Opera
House Trust and Sydney Dance Company.
In addition to his arts career, he has
worked in the community sector, for a
dot com start up business (briefly!)and
has served on not-for-profit boards. He is
also a freelance writer, published in many
Australian magazines.

Peter Thompson is passionate about
broadcasting and was the long running
presenter of the Radio National Breakfast
Program and the current affairs program,
AM, on ABC Radio.
Peter loves journalism that involves both
people and ideas and for him, interviewing
a guest on Talking Heads is an opportunity
to find out about both the person and the
social background that has shaped them.
Away from journalism, Peter is a
Professor and Fellow of the Australian
and New Zealand School of Government
where he teaches on communication,
leadership and social change issues. He’s
also an Adjunct Professor at Macquarie
University’s Department of International
Communication.
Peter and his partner, Jane, have three kids.
When they get a breather they are pursuing
a tree planting project on a small farm in
rural New South Wales.

Lucky Country
Liz Skelton is a highly experienced
leadership development practitioner,
thought leader, consultant and teacher
of leadership and systemic social change.
She has 18 years experience leading ‘social
purpose’ organisations in Australia and the
UK and has led adaptive change initiatives
in the business, government and not-for-
profit sectors on a range of complex issues
including homelessness, drug reform,
Indigenous leadership and business/
community engagement.
Liz is the principal consultant at Social
Leadership Australia and is the co-
author, with Geoff Aigner, of a new book
about Australian leadership culture, The
Australian Leadership Paradox—What
It Takes To Lead In The Lucky Country
(published by Allen & Unwin in July 2013).
Liz was previously, General Manager of
Streetwize Communications, a board
member of the Australian Institute
of Social and Ethical Accountability, a
graduate of SLA’s Sydney Leadership
program and of The Art & Practice of
Leadership Development at the Kennedy
School of Government, Harvard University.
BEING THE CHANGE
Jacki Johnson
Chief Executive Officer,
IAG New Zealand
Jacki Johnson was appointed Chief
Executive Officer of IAG’s New Zealand
business in November 2010. She is the
current president of the Insurance Council
of New Zealand and also a director of
Community First Credit Union and a
member of the Community First Corporate
Governance Committee.
Since joining IAG in 2001, Jacki has held
several senior positions in both direct
and intermediated insurance. Most
recently she was chief executive officer
of the Group’s first dedicated online
insurance business, The Buzz. Prior to
this, Jacki was chief executive officer of
business partnerships, managing IAG’s
risk management and safety services,
New South Wales and Victoria workers’
compensation fee based businesses,
affinity groups, motor dealers and motor
manufacturers insurance distribution
businesses. She has also led organisational
effectiveness and group strategy
functions, and managed the integration
of IAG and CGU’s workers’ compensation
business.
Jacki has more than 20 years’ experience
in the insurance industry and has held
senior positions with Allianz Insurance,
HIH Insurance and IRS Total Injury
Management.
Jacki is a former director of the New South
Wales WorkCover Authority and the
Personal Injury Education Foundation.
MINDFUL CHANGE
Professor Mary Gentile
Director, Giving Voice to Values and
Senior Research Scholar at Babson
College, USA
Mary C. Gentile, PhD is Director of Giving
Voice to Values and Senior Research Scholar
at Babson College; Senior Advisor, Aspen
Institute Business & Society Program; and
independent consultant. Previously, Mary
Gentile was a faculty member and manager
of case research at Harvard Business
School.
While at Harvard Business School (1985-
95), Mary Gentile was one of the principal
architects of the innovative educational
program, Leadership, Ethics and Corporate
Responsibility. Gentile co-authored
Can Ethics Be Taught? Perspectives,
Challenges, and Approaches at Harvard
Business School (with Thomas R. Piper and
Sharon Parks, Harvard Business School
Press, 1993, translated into Japanese and
Hungarian). She has written numerous
publications, articles cases and book
reviews. Gentile holds a bachelor’s degree
from The College of William and Mary
(Williamsburg, VA) and an M.A. and Ph.D.
from the State University of New York at
Buffalo.
LEADING CHANGE
Professor Jim Barber
University of New England’s Vice-
Chancellor and CEO.
Professor Barber is a distinguished
academic. After completing his PhD in
experimental psychology, his research
shifted into the applied fields of drug
addiction and child welfare. His research
record includes minimal interventions
in the secondary prevention of drug
addiction, and evidence-based social
policy and child welfare.
He is a winner of North America’s Pro
Humanitate Medal for his research in
child welfare and a winner of the Vice
Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in
Teaching from Flinders University.
Professor Barber’s experience includes
roles of Company Director on a number
of national bodies, including Open
Universities Australia (Australia’s leading
provider of fee-paying online degree
programs), Jesuit Social Services Australia
and Graduate Careers Australia.
Professor Barber has significant
international education experience, most
significantly taking on the additional
role of interim President of RMIT
International University of Vietnam. He
has worked in regional universities and
has a commitment to their important
contribution in providing access to
education, and also in driving economic
prosperity and enhancing the morale,
culture and identity of their regions.
RAPID CHANGE
John Bruce-Smith
John is a Chartered Accountant with over
30 years global financial management
experience. His career has been in the
information technology & communication
industry and he currently advises a
number of Australian tech start-ups and
US tech subsidiaries. John holds a degree
& diploma in Financial Management and
an MBA and is a member of the Australian
Institute of Company Directors.
After 20 years working with listed
industrial companies in Australia, the UK
and Hong Kong, John moved to Silicon
Valley during the tech boom. From 1998 to
2001, John was Vice President – Finance of
Identix Inc, the global leader in biometric
identification, which was listed on
NASDAQ.
He returned to Australia in 2002 to a role
as the Chief Financial Officer for Atlassian
(2006 – 2011), the highly successful private
Australian software development tools
business. During this period, Atlassian
grew from $10M turnover with 50 people
in 2 offices to $110M with 500 people
in 6 locations. John’s role, apart from
financially managing the organic and
acquisitive growth, was to make the
organisation “investment ready”.
