1. Pick up your Summer Reading Bookmark from your classroom

that you would like to read

Summer Reading Activity: Grades 4-6

Write a book report for a Fiction or Non-Fiction book you have read over the summer. This

report should include: Four paragraphs in which you discuss the theme (main Idea) of the book,

the setting and the main character and the changes or struggle he or she goes through and a brief

summary of the major events of the book. You may include and illustration of your favorite

part of the book with an explanation why that is your favorite part.

FOR NARRATIVE NON FICTION AND FICTION BOOKS

(These are books that tell a story and involve a main character.)

MOST BOOKS WILL FALL IN TO THIS CATEGORY!!!

Paragraph 1 should introduce the book. It should tell the title, author, and the

setting (time and place).

Paragraph 2 should focus on the plot of the book, especially emphasizing the

major conflicts (issues). You should tell the major events of the text and describe

what the main character goes through, and/or what they are trying to achieve. This

paragraph will naturally be longer than your first paragraph, since you are writing a

summary of the main events of the book.

Paragraph 3 will focus on the characters of your book. You should describe the

main characters. . You should also describe one character (a character who learned

something or changed) and explain how and why that character changed.

Paragraph 4 is your conclusion, in which you should review the book that you

read. In this paragraph, you should tell your opinion of the book and why you

would or would not recommend it to your friends to read.

FOR NON FICTION BOOKS

(These are books that discuss a topic, usually historical or scientific)

Paragraph 1- should introduce the book. It should tell the title, author, the

genre, and the topic. You should also tell why you chose this topic to read

about.

Paragraph 2- should tell about what you have learned from the book.

You should tell the major facts (4-5) and why they are interesting or

important. This paragraph will naturally be longer than your first

paragraph, since you are writing a summary of the main facts of the book.

Paragraph 3- This will focus on the vocabulary in the text. Choose 3

words that you learned from the text or by researching the topic that you

thought were interesting. Write the words and the meaning that you

learned in your words.

Paragraph 4- Would you recommend this book to a friend or family

member? Why or why not?

When third-grader Willimena loses the class pet, her teacher helps her to

understand that responsibility means doing one's best, and that animals can't

mongoose, defeats a deadly cobra, and more.

Park, Barbara. Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus

Remember when it was scary to go to school? In the 1st Junie B. Jones book, it's

Junie B.'s first day and she doesn't know anything. She's so scared of the school

bus and the meanies on it that when it's time to go home, she doesn't.

Spinelli, Jerry. Knots in my Yo-Yo String : The Autobiography of a Kid.

This Italian-American Newbery Medalist presents a humorous account of his

childhood and youth in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Mazer, Anne. Knowledge is Power

Abby Hayes's expectations for sixth grade are shaken on the first day when she

makes a blunder that threatens to follow her throughout the year.

Himekawa, Akira. The Legend of Zelda

Link embarks on a quest to deliver the spiritual stone of the forest to Zelda,

princess of the land of Hyrule, while encountering many dangers and fighting

evil.

Davies, Jacqueline. The Lemonade War

Evan and his younger sister, Jesse, react very differently to the news that they will

be in the same class for fourth grade and as the end of summer approaches, they

battle it out through lemonade stands, each trying to be the first to earn 100

After his parents die, Jeffrey Lionel Magee's life becomes legendary, as he

accomplishes athletic and other feats which awe his contemporaries.

Tripp, Valerie. Meet Molly : An American Girl

While her father is away fighting in World War II, Molly finds her life full of

change as she eats terrible vegetables from the victory garden and plans revenge

on her brother for ruining her Halloween.

MacHale, D. J. The Merchant of Death

Fourteen-year-old Bobby Pendragon, having learned he is a Traveler--someone

Edward Tulane, a cold-hearted and proud toy rabbit, loves only himself until he is

Evan's plan to get back at his cousin Kermit for his practical jokes backfires and

he finds himself turning into a giant.

long as somebody loves you. Presents seven short plays based on Roald Dahl's

story about a little boy who stumbles upon a witches' convention, and includes

tips on staging, costumes, and props.

A brief illustrated account of Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat on a bus in

Montgomery, Alabama in 1955, and the subsequent bus boycott by the black

community.

Draanen, Wendelin. Sammy Keyes and the Sisters of Mercy

Sammy continues to make life with her grandmother interesting as she tries to

discover who is stealing from St. Mary's church, befriends a homeless girl, and

plays in a softball tournament against a bitter rival.

Riordan, Rick. The Sea of Monsters

Seventh-grader Percy Jackson has recently discovered that he is the son of

Poseidon, making him half human and half god, and along with his a demigod and

a satyr friend, must save his beloved Camp Half-Blood from evil forces

When fourth-grader George starts at a new school, he vows to become a model

student instead of the class clown he has always been, but just as his plan is going

really well, he is overtaken by a magic burp that turns him back into a mischief-

maker.

around him and recounts his old Norwegian uncle's tales of an almost

mythological logging past.

Yolen, Jane. Wizard's Hall

A young apprentice wizard saves the wizard's training hall by trusting and

believing in himself.

Roberts, M. L. World's Weirdest Sea Creatures

Discusses the life and habits of strange and exotic sea creatures such as the eel, the

wolf fish, and others.

L'Engle, Madeleine. A Wrinkle in Time

Meg and her friends become involved with unearthly strangers and a search for

Meg's father, who has disappeared while engaged in secret work for the

government.
