Rising Junior/Senior AP Literature Students

Required Book & Assignment:

• How to Read Literature Like a Professor, by Thomas C. Foster

Assignment: Write a 1-2 sentence summary of each required chapter. Chapters 5-8 are optional. For the second book, select one from the list below: (Each of these texts has appeared on the AP Literature and Composition exam as a recommended title for the open-ended question. As such, these titles are deemed by the College Board as appropriate texts for study by AP Literature and Composition students. Parents who have concerns about mature content are encouraged to research titles before allowing their students to read. Students are required to read one of these titles but are encouraged to read more.)

• A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini • The Color Purple by Alice Walker • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte • The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood • Beloved by Toni Morrison • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens • The Alchemist by Paul Coelho • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Assignment:

• Use The Poetry Foundation website to identify a poem that correlates with your choice book. Write a paragraph detailing the connection you see between the poem and the novel. Include a copy of the poem or a link to it. Understand that this paragraph is your first writing sample for your AP Literature and Composition class, and you would do well to take it seriously.

• Choose two chapters from Foster's book that suit your choice novel. Be prepared to complete activities linking your chosen chapters to Foster's text upon your return to school.

Written work is due on the first day of school. All work should be typed.
