Alfred Ono, now in his late 80s, is long retired as our Chief Engineer. However, the words he shared with young people still echo and are still shared:

“Grow up to be a person of impeccable character.

Do extraordinary things.Make us proud.

We’re counting on you.”

Page 3: Summer of Adventure › e-magazine › JULY17EMAG_1.pdfExplore the world this summer without leaving the Islands. PBS Summer of Adventure, a collection of eight new limited series,

It’s not my practice to keep secrets from my outgoing Board Chair, Robbie Alm. I’m doing it this once, because it’s a one-of-a-kind secret that really should be a surprise.

By the time you read this, the cat will be out of the bag and Robbie will have retired from the Board following a long and successful tenure. Among his many achievements as leader: diversifying our revenues, investing in revolutionary tech advancements, founding the nation’s first statewide student news network, and building a new $30 million home on time and on budget.

Even before he was a Board member, Robbie was a champion of public broadcasting. He’s been involved in supporting this station, in one way or another, for more than 30 years.

So, of course, Board and Sta are having a party for him. We’ll give him lei and an engraved keepsake, and there’ll be a special song from former Board member, Hoku Award-winning performer/composer Kawika Kahiapo. Robbie also will have to endure a few speeches.

And – here’s our secret. PBS Hawai‘i’s handsome Board Room, which doubles as a second TV/video studio and has a view of our large studio below, will be named after him.

Robbie displayed both battle-hardened confidence and quiet humility in getting our new home built. He likes the results so much, that he’s known to stop by when he could simply make a phone call. He enjoys the natural light, the openness of the floor plan, the cheerful colors, the way the space accommodates work flow.

And now his name will be on the room where he presided over high-level governance decisions. We hope he continues to stop by and enjoy – without any worry.

In next month’s guide, I’ll write about PBS Hawai‘i’s incoming Board Chair. We’re proud to have our first-ever Chair from a Neighbor Island: Jason Fujimoto of Hilo, an accomplished executive whose family-founded, employee-owned business is nearly a century old.

A hui hou – until next time,

PBS Summer of Adventure, a collection of eight new limited series, will transport viewers around the globe, giving access to the rare and extraordinary treasures of our planet. The strong lineup of history, science and natural history programming kicked off in June with THE STORY OF CHINA, GREAT YELLOWSTONE THAW and BIG PACIFIC, three series that will conclude in July.

At the heart of this summer special is WILD ALASKA LIVE, which will capture a gathering of thousands of bears, wolves, moose, orcas and eagles as they take part in Alaska’s summer feast. This three-night event will be hosted by zoologists and adventurers Chris and Martin Kratt, and will visit several locations across the vast Alaskan wilderness. The program will also introduce viewers to local

For the past 45 years, G70 has been committed to thoughtful, purposeful and innovative design that reflects the community in which each project serves. Such was the case for G70’s design of PBS Hawai‘i’s new home.

Completed in 2016, the building features cultural motifs, transparent interior spaces and sustainable elements carefully designed to not only celebrate its geographic location, but also enhance a sense of interaction and community for generations to come.

“It was imperative that the design perpetuates what PBS Hawai‘i’s mission is all about – informing, inspiring and entertaining local communities through the art of storytelling,” said Sheryl Seaman, G70 Vice Chair and Principal-in-Charge of the interior design division. “It is this connection and commitment to the community that we share with PBS Hawai‘i. It is an honor and privilege to not only have worked on this project, but also support them as a sponsor of Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox. We join Leslie as she continues to highlight some of our most inspirational and thought-provoking leaders.”

Mahalo a nui loa to G70 for its support of PBS Hawai‘i. If you or someone you know would like to be a program sponsor, please contact PBS Hawai‘i’s Director of Business Support, Patty Doo, at [email protected] or call 808.462.5048.
