Page 15: Summer Movies and Music 2018 - Camden Public Library · 2018-08-02 · Scenes from Freddie’s An Original Musical written by Ruth Graham. Performed by Jacob Corney and Annabel Parker,

Camden’s very first library, the Federal Society’s Library, was start-ed in 1796. With only 15 families in the community, the library operated for 34 years with a sizable collection of 200 books. In 1854, the Ladies’ Library Association opened in Mrs. Jesse Hosmer’s house on Wood Street. The library later moved to the second floor of the Camden National Bank building and remained at this location until the disastrous fire of 1892 that destroyed the Camden business district.

On March 23, 1896, the citizens of Camden voted to establish a free public library to be known as the Camden Public Library. With publicly raised funds and land donated by local philanthropist Mary Louise Curtis Bok, the cornerstone of the library was laid on August 17, 1927, and its doors first opened on June 11, 1928. Katherine W. Harding served as its first librarian. The library marks 90 years on Main Street this year.

The library was designed by architects Parker Morse Hooper and Charles Greely Loring. It is a representation of Colonial Revival architecture oriented southwest to northeast, parallel to Camden’s Main Street.

Library History

Citing Fletcher Steele’s work, the National Park Service designated the Amphitheatre and library grounds as a National Historic Landmark in 2013, one of only 2,450 in the nation.

In 1996, the library underwent a $3 million expansion under the south lawn with the support of local busi-nesses and individuals. The addition of the Centennial Wing allowed the library to accommodate a much larger collection. It also provided space for the new Children’s Room and Jean Picker Meeting Room.

Camden Public Library is a 5-Star library, one of the top 100 librar-ies in the country. It is one of the busiest public libraries in Maine, and a coastal architectural treasure that exemplifies the pride and deter-mination of the residents of Cam-den. Thank you for being a part!
