Welcome to Summer in the City, our round-up of events and activities

for children and young people this summer.

This year Hammersmith & Fulham Council, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster City Council will combine some children’s services to reduce costs and maintain quality.

To mark the start of this new way of working, the three councils have come together to produce a joint summer listings booklet. This will bring you a wider selection of activities to choose from wherever you live. Young people from across the three boroughs have even helped to create the design.

There’s something for all ages, abilities and interests from the opening of a new Parkour Park to Play Day and

multimedia courses to survival school. There’s lots of joint events too such as Summer of Dance, the Youth Games and this year’s national reading challenge, Circus Stars.

Activities are listed in date order under arts and culture, family events, libraries, play, sport and leisure, youth and summer academy. Each listing will show if the activity is based in Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea or Westminster but if it’s not in your borough, don’t let that stop you from trying it out. Most activities are open to everyone, giving you the chance to try out new things, visit new places and meet new people.

All activities are free or low cost and if you live in Westminster, make sure you show your ResCard for even more discounts in your borough.

We hope this booklet helps you to enjoy a healthy and active summer packed full of new activities to try out.

Age: 11-19The course of true love never did run smooth. The Lyric is offering young people from Hammersmith and Fulham a unique opportunity to create a full scale play in one week during thesummer holidays!

You have the chance to re-tell one of the most famous stories ever written and turn it on its head. Using the starting point of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, we will be mixing it up to create an exciting, innovative and urban response to the magic of the story.

Lovers at each other’s necks, concrete jungles, bbms, facebook – and not an enchanted forest to be seen! T: 020 8741 6869 E: [email protected]

The challenge will run in all libraries throughout the summer holidays, with incentives, activities and events designed to create a real buzz around children’s reading.

Just head to your local library at the beginning of the summer holidays and staff will enrol your children – it’s free to join and every child will receive a membership card or pack. You can then collect

rewards for reading your books. All books count –stories, picture books and audio books – as long as you borrow them from the library.Cost: Free
