MESSAGE FROM THE BOARDGrace Morris, President

AUDIT: The 2015 Audit was approved at our May 22nd Meeting. We received the highest rating for management of our budget, assets, investments and expendable funds. A Deferred Maintenance Fund was established. The purpose of this fund is to have the necessary funds to perform maintenance services which do not occur annually. The Board will continue to manage your funds to keep us at the highest level.

GARDEN BLOCKS: Decorative garden blocks or slate around trees and gardens need to be in good condition. Any missing blocks need to be replaced, loose blocks or slate should be set firmly in place. Loose blocks on grass need to be removed and placed securely in their missing area. Tree roots push up slate & blocks causing alignment to be out of place. Missing or loose blocks impede the cutting of the lawns and can cause more damage to your garden blocks. All small shrubs & flowering bushes should be planted in gardens.

COMMON GROUNDS: Common areas are not dumping grounds. In one area bottles, cans, debris, dog waste in bags and a TV were found. Trash belongs in your garbage not in common grounds. Common grounds are to be maintained in their natural state. Clean common grounds enhance the beauty of Princeton Commons. Please respect the beauty of our common areas.

CURB YOUR DOG: Please be a good neighbor and clean up after your dog. The weather is warm and more residents are walking. Be responsible, leash and clean up after your dog. It is required by law.

OUTSIDE PROJECTS: Many outside projects need an ARC application and approval. Please read your Rules and Regulations. Please call Diane Legreide 732 899-8975 chairperson for the ARC to discuss your project so no problems occur.

GARDEN CLUB: The Board thanks the Garden Club for their flower pots, plantings and flowers which beautify Princeton Commons. Members of the Garden Club plant, water and maintain their plantings. Much work has been done to improve the corner of Spring Hill and Brushy Neck. Many plants, spring bulbs, scrubs and flowers have been planted. The Board thanks you for beautifying Princeton Commons.

GARDEN CLUB NEWSRound and About the Commons

The flowerpots around the bocce court are sporting a new look for the summer....flowers! New plants, new colors, and a cheerful atmosphere will greet the teams as they play their games.

The corner of Spring Hill and Brushy Neck continues to get a lot of attention from the gardeners. The corner is a major challenge for members due to the lack of any water, lots of shade, and critters who love to chomp on the bulbs, roots, and plants members put there to beautify the area. So, rejoice Princeton Commoners if you see flowers and plants thriving on the corner!

Wildflowers have begun to poke up through the ground at the edge of the woods by the tennis courts. Keep an eye out to see what happens. Will they survive and bloom? We sure hope so!

Throughout the Commons there are benches upon which to rest. Garden club members are adding new plants to enjoy so passersby will have a pleasant place to sit, relax, and appreciate the nature around them.

As you can see, the Garden Club members are busy having fun. If you like to dig in the dirt and watch things grow we need you! Have some fun with us as together we make PC a prettier place in which to live. Call President Joe Keegel at 732-202-6804.

Book Club will suspend meeting for the months of July and August. The book chosen for Friday September 9th will be The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. We have had a most successful season, and have enjoyed a broad range of books. We invite new members and can promise you an interesting group of members.

MEN’S CLUB NEWSSubmitted by Joe Callari, President

As we look forward to the Independence Day Holiday, let’s remember the many men and women who sacrificed so much to make and preserve this great nation. And let us also remember and pray for those who have died as a result of terrorist attacks here in America.

Our May meeting began with a franks and beans dinner with all the extras, prepared by out gourmet chefs Tom and Fred.

We then had two Brick detectives give us a presentation on various scams aimed at seniors in our area.

Our guest speaker, Mayor Ducey spoke on the happenings in Brick. He covered the beach openings, the Homestead Rebate, how the “no knock program” works, the Farmers Market and the Summer Fest. He addressed the status of the curb damage in the community and ended his presentation by answering questions from our members about the status of Traders Cove, the Foodtown site, Pathmark and the affordable housing status in Brick.

We had a representative from Meridian Fitness and Wellness as our guest speaker for the June meeting. Korine Sorge informed us of the cost of membership, the many types of equipment available and their fitness programs for seniors.

The pancake breakfast was a huge success!! Many thanks and kudos to our hard working kitchen crew, waitresses and the tireless workers who served 178 breakfasts.

There will not be a men’s club meeting in July. Our next one will be a poolside lunch on August 1st. Hope to see you at the July 4th pool party.

There is still time to sign up for the Blueclaws baseball game on August 16th. Call Joe Callari at 732 714-1655.

Happy summer days to all residents of Princeton Commons from the Women’s Club!!! Hope we all enjoy the pool, beach, concerts and each other’s company! The Women’s Club will not meet in July or August, but will be back in full swing in September. We have a total of 125 members and are going strong. It is not too late to join. We especially want to invite the new residents to come as guests and encourage them to join. They will be welcomed with open arms. In May, the ladies attended a luncheon at the Spring Lake Manor, where they enjoyed a good meal with their neighbors and friends, and many of them went home with gifts donated by some of the members. I want to thank Marie Pederson, Barbara Dattoli and Elsie Ayala for putting together such a nice event and afternoon. At our June meeting, the members played “Name That Tune” with Adrianna Boehn at the piano. President Annette Amoresano attempted to lead the singing, but she can’t carry a tune, plus she was born too late to know the words to the old songs. The officers tried to help her out, but to no avail. The highlight of the afternoon was a performance by “The Dancing Dollies” led by member and instructor Patsy Corcoran. It was the opinion of the club members that the dancers did pretty well. Line Dancing will resume in September. Hopefully we will have new participants join the Dollies. Finally, the afternoon ended with the members enjoying an ice cream dessert. Yum Yum!!

See you in September! Again enjoy your summer!

Preventive Strategies for Seasonal AllergiesSubmitted by Grace Morris, RN

Ragweed and other weeds such as curly dock. Iambs quarters, pigweed, plantain, sheep sorrel and sagebrush are some of the most prolific producers of pollen allergens. Although the ragweed pollen season runs from August to November, ragweed pollen levels usually peak in mid-September in many areas in the country. In addition, pollen counts are highest between 5:00 am. - 10:00 a.m. and on dry, hot and windy days.

Preventive Strategies

• Avoid the outdoors between 5:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Save outside activities for late afternoon or after a heavy rain, when pollen levels are lower.

• Keep windows in your home and car closed to lower exposure to pollen. To keep cool, use air conditioners and avoid using window and attic fans.

• Be aware that pollen can also be transported indoors on people and pets.

• Dry your clothes in an automatic dryer rather than hanging them outside. Otherwise pollen can collect on clothing and be carried indoors.

Grass Pollen

As with tree pollen, grass pollen is regional as well as seasonal. In addition, grass pollen levels can be affected by temperature, time of day and rain.

Preventive Strategies:

• If you have a grass lawn, have someone else do the mowing. If you must mow the lawn yourself, wear a mask.

• Keep grass cut short.

• Choose ground covers that don't produce much pollen, such as Irish moss, bunch, and dichondra.

Tree Pollen

Trees can aggravate your allergy whether or not they are on your property, since trees release large amounts of pollen that can be distributed miles away from the original source. Trees are the earliest pollen producers, releasing their pollen as early as January in the Southern states and as late as May or June in the Northern states.

PUZZLE SOLUTION

JOKES! A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, “How many women can a man marry?” “Sixteen”, the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. “How do you know that?” “Easy”, the little boy said. “All you have to do is add it up, like the pastor said, “4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer”.

A little girl became restless as the preacher’s sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, “Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go?”
