It is estimated that we have just under 5,000 people in Redditch with diabetes. Diabetes prevalence is increasing locally year on year. Every year in June Diabetes UK help to raise awareness of diabetes. This year the theme is 'Setting the Record Straight' and it is tackling the many myths and misconceptions out there around diabetes. We are hoping to raise awareness locally in Redditch about how people with diabetes can manage their condition well and make positive changes to their lifestyle. Two things we are promoting as part of this are: Diabetes Awareness session for staff/volunteers who may be working with people with diabetes (see below for more details) Diabetes Awareness session for the public. On the 17th of June from 10am – 1pm in Worcester Square in the Kingfisher shopping centre, we will have an information stand offering support and advice to anyone wanting to learn more about positive changes they can make to help to manage their diabetes.

Why not become a ‘Safe Place’ The Safe Place scheme has been up and running in Redditch for a while and has since been launched in Bromsgrove in April this year. The aim of the scheme is to provide anyone feeling vulnerable a short term ‘Safe Place’ to go if they are feeling threatened when out and about in their local town or village. It’s really easy to sign up as a safe place. For further information please visit the Safe Place Scheme website or you can contact Sarah McIntosh: [email protected]

National Breastfeeding Celebration Week will run from 18th – 27th June 2016. This is an opportunity for mothers, breastfeeding supporters and health professionals to come together and share what works well to support breastfeeding in local communities. At a national level the aim is to raise awareness of the health and wellbeing benefits of breastfeeding for mothers, their infants and the long term public health for everyone. Local communities are invited to share their own local events with others via social media. To showcase your ‘celebration’ please tweet a photo, along with a caption to #celebratebreastfeeding16 between 18th and 27th June. For more information please visit www.unicef.org.uk/BabyFriendly For more information about how you can get involved in Redditch and Bromsgrove to support local mums to breastfeed please contact Anthea Griffiths. – 07979 645 191 / Ali Wakeman – 01527 517185

People may be aware of the growing concern locally and nationally regarding ‘legal highs’ (new psychoactive substances). These are harmful substances that are smoked, snorted or swallowed for their ‘high’ which are technically legal. New legislation covering psychoactive substances, often referred to as so-called ‘legal highs’, came into effect on Thursday 26 May with offenders potentially facing up to seven years in prison. The Psychoactive Substances Act will provide a blanket ban on the production, supply and importation of psychoactive substances; that is any substance intended for human consumption that is capable of producing a psychoactive effect. Legitimate substances, such as food, alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, caffeine and medical products are excluded. The legislation will fundamentally change the way police forces tackle these substances and will make new drugs that appear on the market illegal quicker than ever before. For more information about psychoactive substances and the new laws surrounding them please visit www.talktofrank.com or search for ‘Psychoactive Substances Act 2016’.
