What is Youth Guidance?
Youth Guidance creates and implements school-based programs that enable at-
risk children to overcome obstacles, focus on their education and, ultimately, to
succeed in school and in life. Learn more: https://www.youth-guidance.org/
Who Do We Help?
Over 8,000 students across 80 schools in Chicago's most underserved
communities. More than 90% are low-income and 65% African American and 32%
Hispanic/Latino.
How Does it Work?
YG counselors engage students in schools on a weekly basis through mentoring, role-
playing, and group exercises to discuss problems, share experiences, and build
stronger soft skills to overcome the extraordinary barriers they face.
What are the Results?
The University of Chicago Crime Lab study showed participates in the YG BAM
program improved high school graduation rates by 20% and provided a social
benefit of up to $119,000 per participant from increased earnings, tax
payments, and lower public benefit use.

for Pennies on the Dollar.
Why Does a Job Matter?
Nearly 90% of African-American and Hispanic teens are unemployed in Chicago.
High unemployment = increased crime = higher tax burdens = less investment in
education and development = a vicious cycle of community deterioration
The University of Chicago Crime Lab found a 43% reduction in violent crime arrests
for youths who secured eight-week-long part-time summer jobs
Where Does Your Company Fit?
A small investment in hiring high school interns can dramatically improve lives while
also ensuring Chicago’s long-term economic prosperity. With public funding of
summer programs being cut, the private sector can make a greater impact.
Students who work during high school have higher employment rates and earnings
later in life. These students stay in school, graduate high school, and enroll in college
at higher rates than their peers. This builds a diverse pipeline of future workers for
local businesses that has previously been untapped.
Employer mentors value the time they spend with students and often report increased
engagement in their job after working with a student.

How Much Does This Actually Cost?
Hiring a student for the summer may cost less than you would expect. The table
below reflects the total cost to your company to hire 1 student for a 8-week
experience:
(*Wages do not include fringe: FICA, Unemployment, Workers Comp)
What is the Duration of a Summer Internship?
The target start date is July 5th for an 8 week period, but this is totally flexible. Most
programs end in the last full week of August and many students are also available
and willing to continue working on a part-time basis through the school year.
What Kind of Support Can I Expect from YG?
YG will provide a dedicated Account Manager to coordinate interviews, training,
onboarding, and anything else you need. They will be reachable for any questions
or concerns throughout the engagement. YG Counselors and Career Specialists will
prepare students before starting and meet with them on a regular basis during
the internship to monitor their progress.
What Type of Job Duties Can a Student Perform?
The skills of the students vary widely which is why an interview process is
recommended. YG has a screening and matching process internally to align the
best fit students to your internship and can then coordinate interviews with
your supervisor to make final selections.
Examples of job duties include: data entry, filing, coordinating meetings, answering
general calls/emails, providing customer service over the phone or in-person, direct
marketing or sales, designing websites, developing PowerPoint presentations,
documenting processes, drafting emails or letters, filling mailers, maintaining
schedules, etc.
