Established in 1966 as the successor to the Navy’s Bureau of Naval Weapons, the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) is headquartered in Patuxent River, Md., with military and civilian personnel.

NAVAIR's mission is to provide full life-cycle support of naval aviation aircraft, weapons and systems operated by Sailors and Marines. This support includes research, design, development, and systems engineering; acquisition; test and evaluation; training facilities and equipment; repair and modification; and in-service engineering and logistics support.

Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) is located at Naval Air Station North Island, “the birth place of naval aviation.” The Command provides comprehensive, quality support to our nation’s aviation war fighters through the overhaul, repair, and modification of Navy and Marine Corps front line tactical, logistical, and rotary-wing aircraft and their components.

Conclusion

Armenta – LM2500 Engineering Support

FRC-SW services the GE LM2500 turbine engine. The LM2500 is GE's most widely applied gas turbine. It powers more than 400 ships in 30 world navies, including the US Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship. Use of the LM2500 began in the US Navy began in the 1970’s making it more than 3 decades old. My assigned tasks this summer are to increase turbine performance through process improvement as well as documenting the necessary tools for handling engines that might be radiation contaminated while off the coast of Japan.

Gonzales – Data Analyst FRC-SW has created a single comprehensive database through collected data. This collected data is then separated to classify rejects, defects and DWO’s “Discrepancy Work Order Request” forms. My task this summer was to convert this data into charts. These charts are used to help monitor and clearly analyze data, identify process improvement opportunities and initiate appropriate corrective action.

Gonzales – Environmental Compliance Regulations

Under the Clean Air Act (CAA), FRCSW Environmental Office is responsible for compliance with all regulations governing emissions and controlling contaminants. Regulations are met by issuing permits through the San Diego Air Pollution Control District. My task this summer was to update the Aerospace Coating's List required under the "Aerospace Coatings Operations" regulations. This requires Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) to be calculated to verify that products used will comply with regulated limits.

Armenta Increasing LM2500 efficiency by

tightening tolerances and clearances will help the fleet to reduce fuel costs, while a proper handling procedures of possibly radioactive engines will help keep mechanics and sailors safe.

Gonzales

By creating charts that identify turn-around time, aircraft availability, cost of repair and influence of defects the FRC-SW is able to improve aircraft flight.

Coatings' product information is deposited within the Hazardous Materials Management System (HMMS) database. Each product's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) contains information for health, safety, and environmental impacts such as VOC and vapor pressure contents. This information is used to ensure each product is within regulatory limits of the CAA.
