Internship Paper

I want to start off with soft skills that I worked on developing and improving during my internship and I will share

with you how I engaged in these during my internship. Networking, Technical and Communication skills.

Take a moment to flashback with me…

“It is a couple weeks before Internship paperwork is due and I am still searching. I am done with my coursework this semester, but I need this internship to complete my degree requirements for graduation. I have utilized on campus resources from working at the business career center to networking and working with professors and connections I’d made over the course of my college tenure. Checklist: Applied, interviewed, networked, sharp resume, very involved and in leadership positions, with relatable part-time work experience. I am asking myself, “I’m a catch right, what am I doing wrong?” I think these thoughts as continue my day to day, winding down my semester on the plains.”

Good friend to the Executive Director of the Auburn Recreation & Wellness Center and my Boss for 3 years Jennifer

Jarvis brought in former Women’s Golf coach, Kim Evans to speak at our fall all staff meeting. As Director of Operations

for Auburn’s annual Women’s Leadership Conference, I connected with Kim Evans again during the spring semester and

we discussed my current involvement and her new role with Office of Student Involvement and I passed her my resume

and she connect me with Lacey Lewis the Sr. Vice President of Finance for Cox Enterprises! Throughout the summer I

connected with and networked with people from my supply chain team, from other divisions, auburn grads, women in

my sorority and other interns! (I speak more specifically of these interactions in the Weekly Reports)

My overall impressions are overwhelmingly positive! I have really gotten the opportunity here to learn, grow,

and add value to my team and the way we do business within our enterprise. Cox is comprised of four main divisions:

Cox Enterprises – CEI (Corporate Hub & Leadership) Cox Communications – CCI (Cable System) Cox Media Group – CMG (News & Radio) Cox Automotive – CAI (Manheim, Auto Trader, Kelly Blue Book)

I worked under the Enterprise group this summer, for Supply Chain Services specifically with the Strategic Sourcing team

of 3 for a company of over 55,000 employees. Cox had several internship activities that I was able to participate in:

Internship Kick-Off (Executives spoke with us on the current & future state of the company)

I really gained invaluable company knowledge through these activities, was able to network with other interns and

connect with full time employees who were once interns at Cox. I also took advantage of the opportunity to network

and volunteer for an organization I was a part of in High School called 21st Century Leaders. Cox is a huge sponsor for the

program that provides weeklong summer leadership institutes for high school students to attend. I met Ed Roche, CCI

Supply Chain who is on the Board of Directors for 21st Century Leaders. While the camp staff was hosting at Emory

University, I was able to attend their Cox Day, Networking reception and dinner. This camp was specifically geared

towards students wanting to pursue business, so I was able to expose and explain to a many students about college life

and supply chain as a course of study and career path. I connected with Ed and he connected me with several others

throughout the summer to meet and start to develop mutually beneficial professional relationships at Cox!

The Business Case that drove my project for the summer was a case for change and growth across the entire

Enterprise known internally as the FutureFocus: 2034 plan. My three objectives were to help strategically manage: (1) an

increase in sourcing & procurement activities and the volume of spend around those activities, (2) increase in enterprise

contracts, and (3) an influx of new employees to our team. These things are expected as a result of a new procurement

policy release in August.

My project scope was to design and implement an internally facing supply chain team and an externally facing

stakeholder collaboration site. Driven from the business case, an internal audit, and feedback we received from our

internal stakeholders, I began to build out a plan to meet the three objectives for my team. I go into detail in Appendix B

(Internship Presentation). This project allowed me to work on cross-divisional teams and cross-functional teams. I had to

work heavily with IT, Securities, Legal, Corporate Communications and other departmental teams during sourcing

events. There were times when I felt I was being pulled between managers to work on different projects and I received

great feedback from my direct manager on ways to ask for top propriety items and work within different team dynamics.

4

Page 5: Summer Intern Final Report (2)

I participated in several other sourcing events, my manager helped to direct my learning by including me in a project,

meeting or negotiation piece for each step in our sourcing process.

Much of my time this summer was spent learning how to use SharePoint, Jive, and Axure web site development

tools. Design and content creation. CEI Supply Chain is not a traditional supply chain where you have to check inventory,

manage freight or warehouses. That kind of supply chain exists within Cox Communications, where they have a fleet of

trucks and 4 DC’s to manage the cable company. I networked with a CCI professional named David Craig who really gave

me some details on how CCI’s transportation and fulfillment team operates. I was curious everyone from his team had

once worked for C.H. Robinson as freight brokers, and one an Auburn supply chain grad! He also gave me some great

advice on MBA programs, even offered to link me up with some professionals from C.H. Robinson. I met another

professional named Scott Shirah who works in Finance for Cox Communications who is an Auburn grad and will be

finishing up his MBA from Auburn pretty soon. He also gave some invaluable advice on different types of programs and

shared with me his personal career.

One of the first projects I got to work on was a new Learning Management System RFP for our Talent Management

group. I observed the vendor demos and was a part of helping score those demos based on weighted criteria. I was even

asked for feedback of the user interfaces of the software. Ultimately got to attend the final vendor selection meeting

with 30 high level managers to sign off on the recommendation. I connected with Erika Mookerjie, as the leader on the

Talent Management side for this RFP. She is truly awesome and has become a mentor and advocate for me here at Cox. I

learned a great deal about what she does as Dir. Of Organizational change. I hadn’t heard much about it so she geared

me towards some cool authors of change management pieces, so I could do more research myself.

I would definitely recommend this internship for anyone in Supply Chain at Auburn and in virtually any major at

Auburn. This internship is not for everyone, if you’re not willing to take initiate, network and work to figure things out

yourself, you don’t want to work here. It’s not really a set here is 5 tasks I want you to complete daily, you’re give a real

world problem, for sure you are supported and given background on the assignment but you are expected to work to

solve the problem in the best way.

5

Page 6: Summer Intern Final Report (2)

To improve the internship experience for others I would advise a session or form for managers to outline their intern

project scope and session to give invaluable tips on engaging with their interns. Some managers who haven’t had an

intern or worked with entry level professionals may not understand the level and extent in which to work with someone

of less experience. I personally didn’t have problems with those but I know some other interns who did. I am currently

negotiating a position to stay on with my team. There really isn’t an entry level supply chain sourcing position available

or in existence for my group. This was a prime opportunity for me as our group is going through a time of growth and

changes, my team is working on ways to keep me around! I also really believe in the corporate values and ethics of the

enterprise, they align with my personal beliefs and background. At Auburn I loved to stay active and involved and Cox

has many avenues for me to continue those things from Auburn in a slightly different way!

I was expecting and anticipating my first job to be working the night shift in a warehouse somewhere and was

preparing for that kind of Operational Management role. Cox really showed me that the things I saw and actually enjoy

in that Operations kind of role exist in the corporate environment. I am a graduate after completion of this internship,

but this internship would definitely be beneficial for someone going back to Auburn to help streamline what classes you

want to take as electives along with the degree course work.

Cox has a slogan: “Act Now. Be Bold. Stay True.” I was able to embody those things this summer, acting when given

an assignment. Not twiddling my thumbs when I didn’t know what to do next. I took initiative, BE Bold, when I didn’t

know something I’d check the internet, even looking back in old slides through Canvas, reach out to our Help Desk, ask a

teammate and eventually my manager if others weren’t able to assist. Stay true, I was able to really just be myself, a 20

something trying to advance, learn, and grow. I showed up on time, ready to work and when I had ideas I voiced them.

Cox is a private family owned company and the dynamics of the company are awesome. Everyone was always friendly

and willing to sow seeds into me as an intern, young professional, and an individual person. When I say everyone, I

mean everyone, I also took advantage of an opportunity to attend a Women’s Leadership Conference this summer. I

reached out to connect with a Cox great named Donna Hall, who was a guest panelist at the conference and who

worked for Cox when it was just a Newspaper, the Dayton Evening News (now Dayton Daily News) in Dayton, Ohio and

now works within Cox Media Group. She responded and was very insightful during the panel presentation. I would

6

Page 7: Summer Intern Final Report (2)

encourage those reading this as a report, a hopeful Cox intern to “Act Now, Be Bold and Stay True” and things will fall

into place for you as they did for me.

4 August 2016

Mr. Jeffrey OsborneSr. Director Enterprise Procurement, Supply Chain ServicesCox Enterprises6205 A Peachtree-Dunwoody Rd. Atlanta, GA 30328

Dear Jeff,

I would like to take the opportunity to thank you and the team for sponsoring my internship this summer at Cox Enterprises. My experience has been extremely rewarding and beyond my expectations. In addition to engaging with the sourcing team and gaining a wealth of knowledge of sourcing and procurement policies, procedures, and methodologies; I was able to experience working in a corporate environment, networking with an awesome and diverse group of professionals and gain valuable insights on career choices.

In particular, it was a pleasure to learn from and work directly for Monica & Courtney this summer. Monica was really a tremendous manager, mentor and truly instrumental in directing my learning over the course of these 11 weeks. Their doors as well as everyone on the teams were always open if I had any questions. Monica and I had weekly 1:1 meetings very help in providing feedback and guidance on any questions or concerns that came up. Monica and the team trusted me as an intern and colleague to be handed an assignment and run with it. I am thankful for those opportunities to aid the team.

In addition, thank you for extending the option for me to continue on here at Cox in another role with our team. I look forward to growing and starting in my professional career.

Please extend my thanks and appreciation to the entire Supply Chain Services team for really an awesome and rewarding summer internship experience.

Sincerely,

Natalie Renee Walker1489 Hampton View Ct.

I have worked with a handful of interns in the past (including one from Auburn) and Natalie surpassed them as far as getting the work done with minimal supervision and maximum output.
