The highest temperature ever recorded was 38.5°C in 2003. HOLIDAYS AND FESTIVALS IN ENGLAND June 17th: Trooping of the Colour or The Queen’s Birthday Parade. The Queen travels in a horse and carriage ( calèche ) from Buckingham Palace to Whitehall in London. Here she inspects soldiers from her personal army called the Household Division. The ceremony is very old. King George II started the tradition in 1748. He was born in November which he thought was too cold to celebrate his birthday, so he combined his birthday cele- bration with an annual military parade. The Queen’s real birthday is in April. June 20th - 24th: Royal Ascot. The Queen also goes to the horse races at Ascot in Berkshire. Queen Anne founded the racecourse (hip- podrome) in 1711. There is a Royal Procession at the start of every day. It’s also a tradition to wear very silly hats: July 3rd - 5th: Goodwood Festival of Speed. Goodwood is famous for its motor racing history. The Festival of Speed is a hill-climb race (course de côte) with historic and modern racing cars including Formula 1 cars. There is also a supercar event with cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche and the new Alpine A110: July 3rd - 16th: Wimbledon. The oldest and most prestigious tennis competition in the world. The first tournament was held in 1877. René Lacoste won the tour- nament twice in the amateur era, but Marion Bartoli is the only French player to win a title in the open era. She won the ladies singles title in 2013. Wimbledon is also famous for Strawberries and Cream: August 28th: Summer Bank Holiday. Bank holidays are a sort of public holiday that fall on a Monday. There are only four real bank holidays (Bank Holidays Act of 1871). The original law said that nobody was compelled to make a payment on these days. Last weekend of August: Notting Hill Carnival. The Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe. It started in 1966 and over one million people attend every year. It is a British West Indian festival, but it is now considered as part of British culture. The origins include race relation problems, but it is now a very colourful and musical family event. June 17th: Trooping of the Colour or The Queen’s Birthday Parade.
