Read the extracts and answer the questions given at the end.

The baby did not die. After several months he was taken to a smaller workhouse where poor children were looked after by Mrs. MANN, a hard old woman. She gave the children as little to eat as possible and only thin clothes to wear. Many of them were often sick from cold and neglect. Oliver was small for his age.

On Oliver’s ninth birthday, there was a loud knock at the children’s workhouse door. Mrs. Mann went to open it. It was Mr. BUMBLE, the beadle, a man who worked at the main workhouse. ‘I’ve come for Oliver Twist,’ he said. ‘He’s nine today. He’s too old to live here now, and must return to the main workhouse.

The milestone read: ‘LONDON 70 MILES’. London! Not even Mr. Bumble could find him there! He had heard that you could fine work in London. It’s the best place for me,’ he thought, and set off for London.

It was many days before Oliver woke from what felt like a long and troubled dream. ‘Where am I?’ he said as a motherly old lady got up from an armchair.

‘Who is she?’ he asked, looking at a portrait of a young woman. ‘Why my dear, I don’t know my dear,’ said Mrs. Bedwin. ‘She is so very pretty,’ replied Oliver, ‘but her eye are so sad and it…it’s as if she wanted to speak to me.’
