Sun Protection for Infants
Babies need extra protection because their skin is very sensitive, thinner than an adult’s and has lower levels of protective melanin. They burn easily. Not only are the sun’s rays damaging to a baby’s skin, but the sun’s heat can quickly cause dehydration and sunstroke in a baby.
If protective clothing and shade are not available, it is okay to use a small amount of sunscreen on your baby’s exposed skin (such as their face and the back of their hands). Using a small amount of sunscreen is better than risking a sunburn, which can be serious for an infant. If you can, check with a healthcare professional before using sunscreen on children less than 6 months of age. Follow all the cautions on sunscreen containers. Before applying sunscreen to your baby’s skin, test a small amount on your baby’s inner arm to see if the skin reacts to the product.

• Keep babies out of direct sunlight when-ever possible. Use clothing that covers their arms and legs, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants. Don’t forget a hat.
• Keep babies protected in a covered stroller, under an umbrella or in the shade.
- Water, sand and snow surfaces will reflect rays onto a baby sitting in the shade of an umbrella or tree.
- The shade provided by trees may not be enough protection because the sun’s rays can still filter through the leaves as they move in the wind.
It is best to keep babies out of direct sunlight.

DEPRESSION
Manitoba has a new resource on the topic of postpartum depression and related disorders. This new website was created and launched on April 7th
by the Postpartum Depression Association of Manitoba. The website address is: www.ppdmanitoba.ca.
The Postpartum Depression Association of Manitoba is a locally led organization created by a group of committed women and health care providers. The WRHA Mental Health Promotion Team and Women’s Health Clinic has worked collaboratively with the Postpartum Depression Association of Manitoba in the development of this website.

Being a parent is both a joy and a challenge with the constant demands from the daily tasks associated with caring for children. Children have many needs that need to be met, and even more desires they would like you to fulfill.
In order to have the energy to care for children, you need to make sure that you’re also taking care of yourself. Self care includes meeting simple physical needs like getting enough sleep and eating healthy, but it also includes taking time for our social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs. When parents identify and meet their own needs, they model for children what it means to value their bodies and minds.
Sometimes practicing self care, especially in the beginning, means asking other adults for help. So don’t be afraid to ask your spouse to give you a break one night a week while you take a yoga class, or ask a friend to take a walk with you each evening. If you love to read, make it a priority to read for 30 minutes every day, other ideas may include writing in a journal, having a hot bath, take a dance class or listen to your favorite music. Take time out of your busy schedule to focus on being the best parent for your children, and know that it’s okay to ask for help.
SELF CAREFor Parents
Summer road trips with small children can be stressful so use your imagination, plan ahead and organize the materials you will need. Have realistic expectations and take breaks often. Here are some helpful tips for making the most of your time on the road.
• Listen to books on tapes or CD’s.
• A cheap 9” X 12” baking sheet- use as a playing surface so crayons, cars, Lego and other small items don’t roll away. Or use magnetized letters, numbers and shapes.
• Sticker or activity books.
• Crayons or markers (best for children 3 yrs of age and up)
• A trip scrapbook– make memories, with drawings or stickers of places you travelled.
• A few gift-wrapped surprise presents – find a few small toys from the Dollar store, let the children unwrap one gift every few hours.
• Colored pipe cleaners – make animals, people, jewelry, crazy shapes.
• Glow sticks, necklaces or bracelets for traveling at night.
• Portable CD or iPod (remember headphones and AA batteries), iPads or portable tablets.
• Pack for Rest Stops or Parks – take a jump rope, ball, sidewalk chalk, bubbles.
• Hang a organizer over the back seat. Great for storage and children can have a variety of items at their disposal.
• Puppets – great for peek a boo with infants or a puppet show with preschoolers.
• Pack one bag for hotel stays that have everything you need for that night.
• Snack bags, have one for each family member.
• Quiet time, designate a specific quiet time at some point and have everyone rest or read quietly.
• Pillow and blankets.
Surviving a Road Trip with Children
5 Summer 2014Issue 15
Children need snacks. Their stomachs are small and their energy needs are high. Dietitians of Canada say, “snacking between meals is great for kids”. That is because children are more likely to meet their dietary needs if they have two or three snacks a day, plus breakfast, lunch and supper.
The key is to plan snacks. As with meals, parents must be in control of the foods offered and the timing of snacks, especially with younger children. Otherwise, your child will raid the cupboard and eat all the easy-to-like foods like chips, cookies and crackers. This will affect their behavior at meal times because they will not come to meals hungry. Eventually the quality of their diet will decrease. Children need to be taught they are not allowed to get food handouts whenever they want or allowed to run around with food.
Snacks should be limited to generally nutritious foods. Offer something from the food groups. Space snacks out so your child will be hungry for the next meal. You want your child to come to the table hungry so they are interested in eating and their appetite encourages them to try new foods. Over time, your child will learn to tolerate a bit of hunger, especially knowing that a tasty and satisfying meal is coming up.
Taking Snacks Seriously: How to Plan Nutritious Snacks for your Children
• Water• Plain or flavored milk• Yogurt beverages• Hot cocoa• Juicy fruits (watermelon, plums, peaches, oranges, can-
taloupe)• Succulent vegetables (cucumber and cherry tomatoes)
• Mini pita stuffed with tuna or egg salad• Bagel & nut or soynut (nut-free) butters• Bran muffin, bannock• Celery with cheese• Hard boiled egg• Oatmeal cookie• Vegetables and hummus• Yogurt with fruit or yogurt parfait with high low sugar, fibre
rich cereal• Whole grain crackers or apple & pear slices with cheese• Mini pita pizzas• Fresh fruit or fruit salad• Banana loaf• Bananas and milk
So, remember that snacks can help make up for foods that are missing during the rest of the day. Just be sure to plan them!
