75 Years of DancingThis marks our 75th year ofdancing. We were founded in1934 by Mrs. Charlotte Oakey, headmistress of BathamptonSchool. Mrs. Oakey had been amember of the English FolkDance Society’s prestigiousDemonstration Team and shewas keen to teach traditionaldancing to her pupils. In time,“Mrs. Oakey’s Boys”, as wewere known, grew into theBathampton Morris Men.

Morris Dancing
Morris dancing is one of theoldest surviving Englishcustoms, stemming from maleritual dances in pre-Christianfestivals. Morris dancing wastraditionally passed on fromfather to son. It is referred to inShakespeare’s plays and inearlier works dating back to the14th century, but the danceswere not recorded until nearthe end of the Victorian era, most notably by Cecil Sharp.
Ironically, due to a recentmedia scare-story that morrisdancing will shortly die outcompletely, more people arejoining morris teams than everbefore, to ensure that morriswill continue as one of thegreatest icons of our heritage.

Mrs. Charlotte OakeyFounder of Bathampton Morris Men
Charlotte Oakey, who foundedBathampton Morris Men 75years ago, became fascinatedby English folk dance in thelate 1920s while she was stillteaching at Corston. Ameasure of her enthusiasm isthat she was prepared to walkthe round trip of 8 miles toattend classes at the BathBranch of the EFDS. She laterbecame a member of theBranch’s demonstration team.
From the beginning the Morrisdance was of special interest toher as an activity away fromthe life of festivals andcompetitions. However, festivals and exhibitions stillplayed a great part in the life ofher teams at Corston andBathamption for many years.
She died as the result of anautomobile accident atCoventry aged 73 in 1963.
