Eastern Mediterranean University - Summer Courses in the history of the Mediterranean (ancient and medieval) 2-30 august 2013, Famagusta, Northern Cyprus Department of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences The Mediterranean has, for millennia, been the nexus for great civilizations, home to three of the world’s most significant religions and the geographical meeting point of three of its continents. It has nurtured high points in literature, philosophy, architecture, art, mathematics and medicine, and simultaneously played host to some of the most epoch making formative conflicts. The courses promote the exploration of this wealth of civilization, and an understanding of the restless and ever-changing political and cultural landscape of the region. Cyprus lies at the heart of this geographical region, and its turbulent history and rich culture is inextricably linked with it.

The program gives students the opportunity to consolidate their interests as related to their own graduate studies, as well as the chance to explore new subjects. The program involves two taught courses, paired with a seminar course and a final written thesis. Through the selection of the specialized units of study relating to the culture, history, archaeology, and economic geography of the Levant, students are trained to make informed observations, and reach sophisticated conclusions, concerning the complexities of the wider Mediterranean. Through active debate and analysis concerning the contestation of space in terms of national, regional, and ethnic identity, graduates of the program will emerge with a mature grasp of what shapes the cultural landscape of the modern world. COURSES History of the Mediterranean from the Roman period to the Middle Ages Dr. LUCA ZAVAGNO (Eastern Mediterranean University); This course addresses the emergence and recent transformations of the Mediterranean as an historical object. It will offer a brief overview of the historiography of the Mediterranean from Braudel to his most recent critics, and situate the historiography within the broader field of contemporary scholarship and politics. It will also explore the methodological and epistemological implications of post-colonial literary critiques of Orientalism and Occidentalism on the one hand, and of the ongoing conversations between historians and literary experts of the Mediterranean on the other. Archaeology of Medieval Mediterranean Dr. LUCA ZAVAGNO (Eastern Mediterranean University) This course examines the character of interconnections, interactions, transmissions and transformations within the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean basin from the Roman Period Byzantine era. Of particular interest is: the influence of cross-cultural exchange in archaeology, the nature and extent of trade networks, mechanisms of exchange, as well as the effects on local economies. There will be an emphasis on maritime archaeology of key seabed sites in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

ATTENDANCE/ADMISSION Anyone may attend the Summer School as either an official student or a special student. EMU and students of other universities or colleges who wish to transfer credits earned at the Summer School to their home institutions are official students ACADEMIC RULES Grades received from Summer Courses are included in the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). In the Summer Courses, students are free to take any course they wish regardless of their standing. However, grades taken in the summer semester are included in the CGPA that determines the standing of the students at the beginning of the fall semester. Each course will consist of a total of two teaching hours and one hours of seminar per week (total 3 hours per four weeks). CERTIFICATION OF ATTENDANCE Official students are given an official Academic Record Sheet showing the credit units of and the letter grade received from each course they registered for and completed. Special students are given a certificate of attendance. ACCOMODATION Free accommodation at the University dormitories and two meals per day will be provided, free of charge, by the hosting institution (EMU) to all the participants (for a maximum of 20). All the participants will be provided with free transportation to and from the University Beach Club LANGUAGES OF INSTRUCTION Courses will be taught in English.
